Butch Carter would be an odd choice for Bobcats
Butch Carter?
That’s the name floated for the Bobcats’ upcoming coaching opening, on Sports Illustrated’s web site. Ian Thomsen – an excellent writer-reporter – was told Carter will get an interview for the job.
Thomsen is smart and responsible, so I’m guessing Carter would get an interview. But hiring Carter, former coach of the Toronto Raptors, would be an odd move. That’s because the Bobcats’ basketball operation has always prioritized harmony among players and coaches.
Carter coached pretty well, but friction surrounded his tenure with the Raptors. He filed a lawsuit against one of his former players (Marcus Camby for calling him a liar) and he said he should also be the Raptors’ general manager.
When Carter dropped the lawsuit against Camby, he issued a statement (reported by Associated Press) saying, "bringing the courthouse into the locker room was not the best way to address this particular matter."
When Carter was fired in November of 2000, general manager Glen Grunwald praised Carter’s work but said his “success was clouded by off-court distractions that were disconcerting to ours fans and our organization."
The strength of the Bobcats has been a “we’re-all-in-this-together’’ approach.
You’re going to hear a lot of names attached to this opening because Bernie Bickerstaff became a lame duck with more than a month left before the end of the season. Coaches are lining up already, in search of an interview.
I doubt anyone will be interviewed until after the season when Michael Jordan and Bickerstaff (he’ll stay in the front office) assemble a list of worthy candidates.

They can not hire Carter. That'd be a terrible move. I'd hate for him to have to sue Brevin Knight for getting too many technicals.

How about Paul Silas?

Paul Silas would be a great choice. He's always made Big Men much better and if we were to get Greg Oden or another Big Man (i.e. Hawes or Wright), Silas would be the best choice. He would improve the likes of Okafor, May, & Brezec to much higher levels.

If Jordan is looking for the next Avery Johnson, and you know that he likes to keep his friends close, how about a smart guy like Steve Kerr?
He played with Jordan for years, and is now very insightful as a commentator. I think that he'd be a great fit, and could help Morrison on his shooting.

I thought it was a gimme that Larry Brown was going to get this job.I think that Kerr is knowledgeable, but I can think of two other guys whose basketball knowledge to me is also impressive.both point gurds from the playgrounds of NYC, Mark Jackson, who many think will be a great coach and another who i has roots with MJ through Carolina,Kenny "the Jet" Smith, who is extremely knowledgeable and I think the players would listen to.

I forgot about Mark Jackson and the 'Jet.'
Either could be impressive as well.
The article on Sam Mitchell of the Raptors in today's paper offers an intriguing option as well. I could see that as being a good pickup for the Bobcats organization.

Steve Kerr would be a good choice, but there are strong rumors that he will get the Arizona Wildcats job if he wants it when Lute retires.....that's probably a better job than the Bobcats right now.

I think Walter Herrmann has improved a lot this last month. He is the future of he team with Morrison, Wallace and Okafor.
If the owners of the team gets a good guard and a pair of good players for next season this team will be in playoffs.

Rick,
When do you start your, "Brevin Knight for Caach" campaign.
Your slogan could be,
" Brevin the most under appreciated coach in Charlotte history, even though he has never really done anything"
It would be great, plu you would not have to think up any real topics to write about. That could carry you for at least the off season. You should put something togather.

By the way that was coach, not Caach and plus not plu. I don't have a fine team of editors like some other slack sports writers.

Ya know, hoops, so were Mike Woodson, Doc Rivers, Bernie Bickerstaff, Scott Skiles, Mike Brown, Avery Johnson, George Karl, Don Nelson, Rick Carlisle, Mike Dunleavy, Phil Jackson, Tony Barone, Pat Riley, Terry Stotts, Randy Wittman, Byron Scott, Isiah Thomas, Maurice Cheeks, Mike D'Antoni, Nate McMillan, Eric Musselman, Greg Popovich, Sam Mitchell, Jerry Sloan, and Eddie Jordan. In fact, the only NBA head coaches without playing experience are Flip Saunders, Jeff Van Gundy, Lawrence Scott, Brian Hill, and Bob Hill. What, sir, is wrong with YOU?
