Bobcats pursuing Brown? Not yet ...
I checked in with Mike Preston, the Philadelphia 76ers’ public relations director, to see if the Charlotte Bobcats requested permission to interview Larry Brown for the coaching opening.
Preston said the Memphis Grizzlies are, so far, the only NBA team that requested permission. Brown, currently holding a role in the Sixers’ front office, is reportedly interviewing with the Grizzlies today (Thursday).
That the Bobcats haven’t yet done this doesn’t surprise me, and doesn’t make me think Brown is off their radar screen. It does confirm something I anticipated: that the Bobcats’ coaching search will be a deliberate process.
That’s as it should be.
What’s the rush? Brown and former Charlotte Hornets coach Paul Silas are available now, but many of the league’s top assistants are working during the playoffs, and effectively off-limits for job interviews.
Also, if the Bobcats want to make a run at Toronto Raptors coach Sam Mitchell (NBA coach of the year and briefly a Bobcats assistant), they’d have to wait at least until the Raptors’ playoff run ends and more likely into the summer when Mitchell’s contract expires.
We increasingly live in a microwave society where people think if something isn’t done right this instant, then the process is flawed. I’d rather see the Bobcats play out too many options than play out too few, in choosing Bernie Bickerstaff’s successor.
Lewis might opt for loyalty
On a completely separate note, The Tacoma News-Tribune quotes Rashard Lewis as saying he'd give his current team, the Seattle Supersonics, the opportunity to match any other team's offer for him. Lewis isn't obligated to take that approach, since he'd be an unrestricted free agent when he opts out of his contract.
That says to me Lewis' strong preference is to remain a Sonic, and that he's opting out only to pursue more money. That's fine, but I would think that would temper any interest the Bobcats might have in signing him. Do you want to make a huge financial commitment to someone clearly predisposed to staying with his old club? Seems like the only thing the Bobcats would do is raise the price the Sonics would pay.

If I had my 'druthers, I would vote for Rick Carlisle, a great coach who got a bum rap at Indiana. I believe he would be a perfect fit in Charlotte. I hope he gets an interview.
As for Rashard Lewis, he is a nice player but not worth what he will no doubt cost. Our priority should be re-signing Gerald Wallace, making the most of our two first round draft picks, and deciding whether Raymond Felton, Sean May, and Adam Morrison are going to be part of our nucleus long-term, or should be traded.

Please oh please don't bother with Larry Brown, he'll come here tear these young guys down, we won't sniff the playoffs next year, we'll make a playoff run in 2009 and then he'll leave for some stupid reason, putting us right back where we are now.
We don't need anyone's retreads, go after someone young and hungry as coach, with no prior head coaching experience. Yeah you may get a dud, but you might also get Phil Jackson. Take a chance on someone who could be great, rather than settle for someone you know can't.

I am from Chicago. We have suffered 9 years to finally break through last night to be a legitimate contender. I agree with "ArtVandelay". Larry Brown is a huge mistake. Go for a young coach who will grow with the team. You have a nice group with Okafor, Wallace and Felton. Larry Brown is dishonest and a con man. He will fool you for a year or two until he will create a bogus reason to leave. I wish you would have won that last game against the Knicks. Good luck from Chicago!

I honestly feel the Bobcats need to trade May while he still has trade value. We should keep Felton, Wallace, Okafur, Morrison maybe even Herrmann. As far as our "big time free agent". I would acquire Paul Pierce, and let him and Wallace get loose together. Then some way some how, get KG the following yr. I dont know, maybe this is why Im a Comp. Tech. major and not a GM...-Chan

What kind of value do you think May has? Nobody wants to pay for a guy with one year on his contract who has only played in 58 games over 2 years and shows no signs of getting better.

I am glad to see that jordan and BET guy finally decided to add Van Gundy (a token white guy) to the mix. I thought every team had to interview at least 1 white person for a opening coaching spot.

The Bobcats need to pick up Shawn Kemp. He is looking really good in workouts as of late.

I rescind that comment. The police need to pick up Shawn Kemp. I just saw him selling crack outside my house.
