Roy should have swept ROY

Portland’s Brandon Roy was just named NBA Rookie of the Year and, like last year, the winner received all but one first-place vote.

Somebody voted for Toronto’s Andrea Bargnani in what I assume is a move similar to some Utah broadcaster voting for Deron Williams over winner Chris Paul a year ago.

Roy’s rookie season wasn’t as good as Paul’s, but the gap between him and the rest of the class was similarly wide. He was a solid, versatile guard, and I wish the Bobcats had given him closer evaluation before choosing Adam Morrison (over Memphis’ Rudy Gay) when Roy was still available. (And before someone accuses me of 20-20 hindsight, I wrote in October that Roy would be rookie of the year.)

Bargnani finished second, and Gay was third.

Morrison, who tailed off dramatically at the end of the season, finished fourth in the balloting, with 11 second-place votes and 11 thirds. Charlotte’s Walter Herrmann was 10th, with a second-place vote and two thirds.

I’m one of 128 media members voting on this thing. My vote was Roy-Gay-Morrison, and I’m not sure any of those guys will end up the best player of the class. When Portland’s LaMarcus Aldridge fills out physically, watch out.

You voted Morrison? Based on what? I'd like to know the reasons, if possible. I don't think is consistent with what you preached during the season.
But, I recognize that there wasn't much to choose...

Walter Herrmann > Adam Morrison

We get it Rick, you hate Adam Morrison. Can you please write one more blog expressing how much you hate him, we've only had about 20 this year. Its funny though because you also hated Matt Carroll prior to this season and also thought he was a bad player. Just like you thought Walter Hermann was the worst player in the league. Still don't think you've admitted you were wrong about those last 2 guys. You're pathetic man. Go cover the Charlotte Knights and stop wasting our time. This article on Roy was just another excuse for you to bash Morrison again. We know, he had a bad rookie year. Couldn't defend and shot terrible from the field. But enough, its getting old.

Hilarious, they are on the radio bashing Rick's terrible articles. You are a joke man. Rick wrote them an email trying to defend his pathetic work and they just read it and clowned him some more. What a joke. How did you get this job? Can I have it?

I'm sure he voted Morrison based upon his numbers, pure and simple. It's not hard to argue that they're the third best in the class, and he way had more responsibility in his team's offense early than Bargnani or Gay.
Prior to this season, Carrol had not shown anything that suggested that he could be an impact NBA player. Good 10 MPG shooter, maybe, but that was about his ceiling. As for Herrmann, what had ANYBODY seen before about January that said he would have had the impact he did? His defense early in the year was LOUSY. Furthermore, Bonnell DID write a blog praising Herrman for his improvement and admitting his rush to judgment based upon what he'd seen. But for Bonnell or anybody else, what can you go off of if you don't see it on the court?

And if stating the fact that Morrison's late-season performance left much to be desired is to "bash" him, I'd love to see what you said if he really laid into Morrison, the only 6-8 player in history who can't average 3 RPG in 30 MPG.

Why do newspapers continue to employee writers that everyone hates? You suck, Bonnell!

I bet the "guy" that I said me & corn suck was Bonnell! ;)

Thanks for the tip, JT...they SURE could have used you on the scouting staff BEFORE the season. Then again, maybe there's a reason they're paid to scout basketball talent and you're not.

Too bad you couldn't vote for Brevin Knight as ROY. I bet you tried.... .

Yeah...you should have voted for Ray Felton and his 38% shooting (with the most shots on the TEAM!). That's the leader ANY NBA team would look for in their point guard position.

Dissappointed you bet. This was not a stellar performance from Morrison by any stretch of the imagination. I watched him play high school and college ball and there is more to this story than the mid to end of season performance. Find out the whole story before you downgrade the player.

Posted by: Rey Amundson | May 13, 2007 9:54:46 AM

And the 'story', as I see it, was that we drafted a kid who's a streaky, but good open shooter, but who plays poor defense at best, doesn't have the lateral quickness or strength to get to the basket, and who allows his emotions to affect his game way too much. Do you know any more? If so, you should probably say so.

Rick, Adam Morrison has a confidence that you find in only a few rookies to come into the league. He has a shooters mentallity, he'll keep jacking them up if he's red hot or ice cold. That is what you want from him. He was drafted for his offensive prowess and if you shake his confidence now you will only hurt his progress. To be sure you did'nt think he was going to dominate the Heat like they were Santa Clara? Give him time, the kid is gonna be a heck of a scorer.

But you would have imagined the guy could have guarded SOMEBODY, shot more than 38%, or picked up more than 3 RPG at 6'8".
