The pros and cons of a Bobcats trade for Kobe
First off, I believe Phil Jackson. The Lakers' coach told the Los Angeles Times he’s confident Kobe Bryant will still be on his roster when training camp opens in October. That makes perfect sense to me, despite all of Bryant’s assertions he wants a trade. Just because a guy says he doesn’t want to be there doesn’t mean you have to move him. Bryant is under contract - a maximum contract, by the way - and figuring out a way to calm him down over time is far less problematic than figuring out a way to get fair compensation while trading a superstar. But just for fun, let’s say the Lakers do move Bryant. Are the Charlotte Bobcats a viable trade partner? I can make an argument either way. It’s easy to dismiss Bryant-as-a-Bobcat as fantasy. First off, consider why Bryant wants to leave the Lakers: He’s lost confidence in his current team’s ability to assemble a championship roster on the quick. If he thinks his window is closing on winning more titles, then why would he go to a team that has never made the playoffs and has multiple flaws? Also, Charlotte isn’t exactly the NBA's epicenter. Bryant might have said he’d accept a trade to Mars, but realistically he’s probably more fixated on Chicago, New York or Phoenix. So there are the negatives. Now consider the positives: I would argue the Bobcats have a unique advantage in making a viable offer to the Lakers because they could assemble tens of millions in room under the salary cap to absorb Bryant’s salary. That’s important, because it means the Lakers wouldn’t have to accept a bunch of garbage off Charlotte’s roster to balance the deal under the salary cap. The Lakers would get the things they want (cap relief, draft picks and young talent) and might even convince the Bobcats to accept some junk in return (like Kwame Brown’s contract?) The key is how much the Lakers would demand. I take it for granted the Bobcats would hand over their two first-round picks (Nos. 8 and 22), plus a future first-rounder. I also assume the Lakers would expect either Emeka Okafor or Gerald Wallace (who would have to be a sign-and-trade). No way I give up Okafor if I’m the Bobcats. Also, if I were Bryant, I’d demand the Bobcats keep Okafor, since a wing scorer needs a rebounder-shotblocker-bodyguard. So Wallace, who is represented by the same agent as Bryant, probably would have to become a Laker. At the end of all that, the Bobcats would get the player they need most (a consummate scorer who demands a double-team every trip down the floor) but would gut their other assets (draft picks, young talent and cap room.) Bryant would sell tickets and create buzz in Charlotte. But would he be any closer to a title than he was in Los Angeles? And if he’s not, wouldn’t that re-start this cycle of him complaining and second-guessing and eventually demanding another trade? In other words, be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it.

I applaud a column that's actually about basketball- good step. But one that actually deals with the teams pressing issues IN REALITY would be nice. Bonnell, is it true that you can't get anyone from the team on the phone because of your costant hammering of ownership and management? It sure seems like it. Are we going to resign Gerald Wallace? When? Is anyone on the trading block (Knight, Brezec, the picks, or even G-Force [which would be amazingly stupid])? Are the Bobcats leaning towards a scorer or big man in the draft? What about Carrol and Hermann's contract? If you actually do know any more infromation than the trickle that's been available, please write about it.
Please no more articles about front office hires, or new scouting assistants, or corporate elbow rubbing and back scratching. Every team in every league is owned by !@#holes, don't care about them. What are the Bobcats doing to change the on the court group?

Yes Bustacat its true, the sports editors & staff at the Observer have alienated the Bobcats front office with their constant criticism and imaginary characters on their internet blogs and comment pages. The editors have instructed their writers "more negativity" in response to being shut out of the scoop. Plus this is the Charlotte Observer sports staff we're talking here, the only thing they know about sports is restrictor plates and sucking Jerry Richardson's kneecaps. They couldnt talk X's & O's and gameplay if they tried. Best solution is to pick up the Gaston Gazette or Rock Hill Herald, for insight like that.

Good to see that someone else feels like I do on here! Good Points Bustacat! I see that Mike Cranston from the Associated Press wrote an article about Adam Morrison for us today to see how he's doing in the offseason! More than we get from Bonnell!

Thanks for letting me know about the Morrison article ChillyDoggy. By the way, I Googled the article. It has appeared in 64 different newspapers and online news stations. One big exception, the Charlotte News and Observer.

BustaCat, as you know, it is the Charlotte Observer and the Raleigh News and Observer...not the Charlotte News and Observer. The Bobcats need the Observer much worse than vice versa. The Bobcats threw a season ticket holder party at the end of the year and 350 people showed up. No loyalty..This year is the last year of the 3-year commitment for most season ticket holders and I see people bailing right and left. Maybe we can all watch on TV on Time Warner Cable. I know you are on the payroll, but are the Bobcats also paying you by the post?
Posted by: Emilio | Jun 19, 2007 8:22:46 PM
ouch. Good points.(except being on the payroll.of course)

Charlotte Observer is losing subscriptions at a fast rate. Internet clicks are down on their website. Charlotteans are getting their news from elsewhere. Most of their subscribers only want the Sunday paper anyway, because the rest of the week's coverage is garbage. More people read Creative Loafing now than they do the Observer. The staff & editors are down to their last resort, creating fictional characters on their blogs to drum up interest in their sports commentary. It wont work, Charlotteans are not fooled ladies.
PS-Honeybee4ever, I think you should go to the Hornets message board or move to Louisiana, and wear that pretty little dress George likes to see you in when you go. GO BOBCATS>>>>>

Please let's don't start with the "trade for Kobe" garbage. Has anyone forgotten this is the same Kobe Bryant who said he'd sit out a year before he'd play in Charlotte (when drafted by the Hornets)? I want a TEAM in Charlotte. I don't want the Kobe show. Let's look realistically at why the Lakers are no longer on top. They were a winning team but Kobe had a problem with Phil Jackson. No more Phil Jackson. Then Kobe had a problem with Shaq. No more Shaq. Bottom line, no more playoff wins. He can blame whomever he wants for the Lakers woes, but he needs to look in the mirror. Is his talent really worth the disruption that he brings? I say absolutely NOT! We don't need the likes of Kobe Bryant. What we need is to be patient and build a winning team the right way and for the long haul. So far, we are headed in that direction. Let's don't blow it now by thinking the grass is greener on the other side!!

Carol, I agree with you. We need to re-sign Wallace and Carroll, extend Okafor, and bring in a free agent that can help down low like Rashard Lewis or Zach Randolph, or yes, maybe even Vince. Draft Jokim Noah or Spencer Hawes at 8, and maybe Acie Law or Marco Belinelli at 22. There is a chance we may trade up or down. Bryant is not coming here or anywhere else, but if he came to the East, it would be NYC or Chicago. I trust MJ and Bernie to do the right thing. We are going to the playoffs next season.
We will be Eastern Conference Champs within the next 3 years. Raymond, and May are going to have breakout years, Hermann and Morrison too. I still like Brevin here. There are still lots of negative people in this city, but most are never going to be fans anyway. Some do sound racist at times, but are just showing their ignorance. I've been a Panther PSL owner from the first day you could buy them, and am a Bobcats season ticket holder. I enjoy being in a major league city. Be patient, it will pay off. Charlotte is a great city. Except for the old 53-37%ers who seem to hate any sort of progress.

this web site sucks why would any body make an article about banning aau.

Bonnell SUCKS! Please move away and get another job!
Posted by: CHillyDoggy | Jun 20, 2007 10:16:56 AM
Carol is right, Bryant snubbed this city years ago. He can still kiss my a@$. Second thing, is there a moderator or someone that can filter comments that don't make any sense on this subject. Bonnell, maybe you could write an entry claiming to be the most benevolent writer for every charlotte based team. Then, each comment from these whiners (who really look like Bobcat employees to me) can post their crybaby whinning there.

Can we please get some info about the basketball team we have now instead of talks about Kobe? What about an update on the workouts? Who are we working out next? Who are they showing interest in? Which draft prospect is the better fit for our system? What did Ryan Hollins learn after his first season? What did Herrmann learn? We already know what Morrison learned courtesy of the AP. Is it too much to get this kind of info from our city's newspaper? Why do we have to look elsewhere for information?
Posted by: DS | Jun 20, 2007 1:05:59 PM
DarenNC,
Is it surprising to you that fans actually want to hear about their team. Do they have to be employees of the Bobcats just to get some quality reporting? When you have to look at papers based out of Gaston County, Rock Hill or Winston-Salem for info on a team based in Charlotte, something is wrong.

Didn't everyone in the universe already discuss this when it was relevant?
Maybe one about the effect of the age limit on the NBA?
Or Jordan unretiring (the first time)?
How about just an article about Dr. Naismith
You suck, Bonnell

Did you hear about Bobbie johnson hiring michael jackson a number of years ago. Everything was going well until Michael starting turning white. Bobbie then fired white mj and hired another mj who is black i think........GO HORNETS.........you hornet guys come to the blackcats arena when the hornets are in town next year. I am buying a entire section for you guys to use. It will be the first section ever sold out for this bunch of black idiots.

racist much, George?
Posted by: Bonnell=Greatest Reporter Ever! | Jun 21, 2007 11:35:28 AM
No I am not racist. I am a white man who has a beautiful wife. Check out my website, www.neworleanshornets.com
Unlike bob johnson, I have hired head coaches a different color than me. For the record I have payed Gene Littles, Paul Silias, and currently Byron is my head coach. So yes I am white, however I am not the racist owner, that appears to be Mr. Johnson.
Posted by: George | Jun 21, 2007 11:54:20 AM
Guys please don't tell Mr. Johnson that my wife is white.....Please.......
Mr. Curry

This is really sad. If is so unfortunate that many of the comments made by Mr. Bonnell and many others appear to be more about race than about basketball. I have faith in what Mr. Johnson and Mr. Jordan are doing. They appear to be building a winning foundation. I can only hope that is is for the Bobcats in Charlotte rather than the Bobcats in another city. It is ironic that all salient news on the Bobcats come from sources other than the Charlotte Observer. However, I must applaud the article written by Tom Sorensen today. Hopefully he will write more.

I just read the article by Sorensen:

I'm glad everyone else notices the coverage of this team blows by the Observer. Now that the Gaston paper and WSJ are covering them more we won't have to wait once a month to see articles related to basketball.

I really wish there were more articles about the Bobcats now, but that's not the topic at hand.
While Kobe Bryant is the example of what we're looking for with the Bobcats in regards to the court, he's still a crybaby who will do whatever he needs to get the job done...even if that means talking down on his own teammates.
This team has been built on hard work and pure hustle and for the most part good characters. While Kobe Bryant could "arguably" be the greatest scorer in NBA history...he's too much to handle and isn't worth it in the long run.
If you want to make a move that will be good for the team, give us a go-to scorer, and a potential superstar...then offer the 8th, 22nd, Wallace, and a future 1st round pick and/or to the Sonics and pick up Kevin Durant.
Let's rundown why this could be possible: The Sonics have a lot of holes to fill and are currently in limbo about their future on where they're playing at. Gerald Wallace is a star to be and would fill the hole Rashard Lewis left. The Sonics could select a big man with the 8th selection and another much needed player with the 22nd pick to go along with a future (Protected) first round selection. Getting Adam Morrison would also be great because he would be going back to the area where he's lived at for so long; he'd be there with his family and friends and might just be enough to calm him down to becoming the player he can be. So, let's just go out on a limb and say Joakim Noah is the selection at #8...So that means you have Fortson/Noah/Wallace/Allen/Ridnour...That team would compete in the West next year and MIGHT save the team. The Sonics GM has to see that one person isn't going to change the landscape of the Sonics organization, but that one person is the key to building a competitive team...a team that could give them a shot at saving the team in Seattle.
Why this is good for the Bobcats: It's so obvious that this city needs a scoring superstar in the worse way. This person needs to be humble, great with people, and most importantly one of a kind on the court so the Charlotte Bobcats along with this person can create an indentity with the city and the rest of the world. Kevin Durant has all those qualities and the Bobcats really need him. So what if he can't bench press 185 pounds? He's a dynamic scorer and he'll get stronger as time goes in his NBA career. He's Kevin Garnett with Tracy McGrady fluidity and driving and shooting skills.
