No Bobcats moves yet, but stay tuned

You’ll notice the Bobcats haven’t signed anyone lately. Based on a couple of recent emails, that concerns some of you.

Don’t confuse deliberate for disinterested.

Bobcats management is looking to be a smart shopper. NBA free-agency is a buyer’s market right now and training camp is more than a month away. Why panic?

There aren’t many spots available on NBA rosters. So most of those who don’t already have contracts will end up signing for the league minimum. That’s what the Bobcats are offering, based on everything I’m hearing.

Are there holes in the roster? Certainly. They obviously need a backup point guard and the depth inside is iffy. Big men Sean May and Othella Harrington were hurt much of last season, so their durability entering training camp has to be in question.

Beyond those holes, they generally need experience. Whatever limitations Brevin Knight and Jake Voskuhl had, they were veterans who knew what they were doing. They’ll be missed.

In a perfect world, the Bobcats would re-sign Jeff McInnis and Derek Anderson and add veteran big man Adonal Foyle, recently bought out by the Golden State Warriors. Foyle isn’t much offensively, but his shot-blocking would be handy when Emeka Okafor needs a rest.

Bobcats general manager Rod Higgins knows Foyle from his days in the Warriors’ front office. A classy guy, Foyle would be a comfortable fit here.

But none of those players figures to get more than the veteran minimum from another team. So the deliberate approach is the wise approach for the Bobcats as August becomes September.

I think Mr. BET (Black Every Time) has been more concerned with spending his money for air time on CNBC. In his commercials he is trying to convince everyone that he is not racist. HA HA HA

Yet more proof that most anti-arena people are just seething with envy of any black person with money. It just kills them. Even more than it kills them that they can't get anyone elected to office.

Anyway, on to the subject at hand -- there should be plenty of inventory of backup PGs and PF/Cs. I'd love to see Adonal Foyle here.

BET (Biased Envious Taxpayer), Hmmm, it takes one to know one doesn't it? It's too bad we can't spend more time talking about basketball as opposed to reflecting our upbringing. The reflection pool is indeed shallow! Go Bobcats!!!

I think Taxpayers daughter dates a black guy or something. Notice everytime he post, he has to say something about the Bobcats being an all black organization. I mean tell us something we dont know...anyway... I wouldnt mind seeing Foyle back up Mek, he could give us some quality defensive minutes. I wouldnt mind seeing Mateen Cleaves as our back up PG, but still keep TooShay (sp. so you know Im talkin about) as insurance.

I really wish we could ban all these ignorant rednecks that REFUSE to drop the race issue. I would love to be able to get on this blog and talk Bobcats with true fans. If you're interested, an awesome fan website for the Bobcats is www.bobcatsplanet.com - Check it out for REAL bobcats talk.

This is my first time posting on the forum....I am neither white nor black....I don't know why everything always boils down to race issues....We are all from the same human kind.....Lets just focus on the basketball aspect of things...so what do you guys think of the changes of the bobcats making the playoffs? What is you opionion of the offseason trades, draft picks, and signings?

Posted by: Marcus | Aug 21, 2007 10:21:38 AM

I am right there with Bobcat Matt & Chan...Why is the race card an issue? Last I checked this team is in its 4th season and since the inaugural season the team has improved in wins and payroll. Not only did they re-sign their core players, they traded for a perennial all-star in J-Rich. If anyone thinks this team is going in the wrong direction they are sorely mistaken. If the NBA was the stockmarket I would buy the Bobcats low. They are still flying under the radar. Think about it, it's only the 4th season for them. Tell me the last expansion team that has more success in less time in the league...you can't cause the Bobcats have re-set the bar. it's just sad that more fans haven't taken notice.

I meant Marcus and Bobcat Matt, not Chan...GO BOBCATS!!!

Taxpayer, you sound like the racist!

That said, I think resigning DA should be priority #1 over McInnis. At this point in his career, he can play PG for us better than McInnis. But I would like to see both of them brought back. I can understand us not signing someone from another team yet, but those guys played for us last year. It bothers me that we haven't made a decision on them yet. DA should be a no brainer IMO. He brings experience, leadership, etc...the things we lack the most on this team. McInnis brings in the experience too, but doesn't really have the leadership factor.

I agree with you for once though, we should bring in Foyle. Hopefully having Higgins will help make that happen. He's a great defender. Hollins and Davidson aren't ready to take on a big role yet, so we need a guy like Foyle to spell Okafor and play some tough D and grab rebounds. He would be an upgrade over Voskuhl, who played that role last season.

If we needed to go defense in the 4th quarter to close out a game, we could have Wallace, Okafor AND Foyle in the game. That's a ton of shot blocking ability! And with the addition of Richardson, we have an offensive weapon to help close out the game on the other end of the floor.

An update on Alan Anderson would be nice...it was reported we'd tendered an offer right before summer league and at that point he was unsure if he'd take it. If he does that leaves only ONE spot open without waiving someone. Hoopshype still has him included in our roster.

How do we clear 3 spots to do what Bonnell suggests? I doubt seriously if we eat Harrington's deal. Hollins?

FWIW I agree bringing in those 3 would be "solid" moves. Will Derek accept a vet min deal again? Is there any news (call his agent!!!) on how he feels/is leaning?

Posted by: spectre | Aug 21, 2007 1:08:42 PM

I actually agree with Bonnell: The Bobcats are being smart shoppers and this make sense given that most rosters are nearly full and few teams are able to pay outlandish salaries to the marginal players that are left. In business, $1 = $1. The NBA is a business. Now, before someone starts spouting off about cheap management, tell us how YOUR salary compares to a "cheap" $1,300,000!! Give me two cheap years like that and I would be set for life! Dummies don't grow wealth.

Posted by: Mo | Aug 21, 2007 3:32:35 PM

DA and McInnis are musts, and I do like the Foyel signing. If he would help the Bcats, there's no way he is going to be overlooked as our GM knows him well. I just have to trust them on that signing.

First hope, no more injuries! A healthy May (finally!) and Okafor would be great. I'm not too worried about Felton, Jrich or GW. (knock on wood)

Second, I'm not quite ready to give up on Morrison yet. I didn't want him last year, but really think he has a chance to be a great 6th man, instant O player.

Third, I hope the racist posters will eventually stop (the last being the least probable one)

Posted by: Bonnell=Greatest Reporter Ever! | Aug 21, 2007 4:40:14 PM

If we need to make room on the roster, I think cutting Harrington would be the way to go. He's often injured, and when healthy he's not much of a player anymore anyway. Also, we can send Hollins or Davidson to the D-League, probably Hollins, and that opens another roster spot.

I'm also hoping we trade Primoz once the season starts, or anytime for that matter. I have a hard time seeing him fit in with this team if we're going to try and run more and try and play tough D too...he can't run or play D.

Posted by: Air Bobcat | Aug 21, 2007 8:41:14 PM

I agree cut Harrington and let McInnis go too. I think we should go with younger players at backup at this point. I like Hollins, he just needs some experience the D league may be the right place for a while, so we would need to sign a BU point gaurd.

I don't understand the noise about Foyle around the league. He may be a great glue guy for the locker room, but he is the worst player I have ever personally seen in an NBA uniform. Watching him play is painful,

Posted by: Mark | Aug 21, 2007 9:44:01 PM

I like Alan Anderson to stay with the Bobcats. He's been with the team for two years. He could have a break season, also he can play four positions and defend. They like him a lot around the bobcat arena. He is a great leader on and off the court. He a great young guys.

Blessings

AA is horrible. Don't know what you guys see in him. He may be a great guy, but he isn't NBA caliber. Even a Mich St co-worker agrees.

Posted by: Bonnell=Greatest Reporter Ever! | Aug 22, 2007 1:08:24 PM

Some people are who they are because God made them that way and they realize it "Ask Coach Tony Dungy" Alan Anderson is a great NBA player and was a great college student athlete while earning his college degree (what a guy). He has God given talent that you and your co-worker would not never begin to understand. We should wish the best for all of our student athletes. You can be anything God has plan for you and what God has for Alan Anderson in the NBA can't nobody take it away. See Alan belong to Gods family and God ends up with a victory always. God is the only one that judges his children who he himself made. God holds all power. Try Gods way, its the only way. Have a bless day! Blessings

Bobcat Matt, I totally agree with you. For those that want REAL, and I emphasize REAL again, talk on the Bobcats, hit up that site www.bobcatsplanet.com. All these losers that post all that race crap and such up here bore me.

GO BOBCATS!!!

Well, looks like Foyle is headed to Orlando. So what big men are left that would be viable...is Melvin Ely an option? Hopefully we won't have to dip into the Andrew DeClerq's and Wang ZhiZhi's of the world.

I like how the roster is shaping up, but hopefully the front office can pull in a decent big man because Okafor/Brezec/May is simply not enough inside to get through an entire season, let alone making a playoff run.

Posted by: QCP | Aug 23, 2007 12:00:27 AM

How much more would the BOBCAT'S first team have to kick it up to compensate for not having a good backup center to give OKAFOR a rest? What must the BOBCAT'S do if PRIMO cannot operate effectively in the up tempo play that Vincent intend to play?

Posted by: SEW Jr. | Aug 23, 2007 7:54:35 AM

What is up with the questions about Primoz fitting in with an uptempo system? Isn't an offensive big who can hit an outside shot the kind you want?
You're right, too DA. You should also ask Coach Dungy how he feels about gays and Jews. He thinks himself an expert on the subject...probably has a hotline to Jesus himself.

Posted by: Jesus Ain't MY Homeboy | Aug 23, 2007 3:51:03 PM

The problem with Primo is that he sucks.

Alan may be a great person, but a good NBA player that does not make.

Bcats need health and davidson/hollins to step up

Posted by: Bonnell=Greatest Reporter Ever! | Aug 24, 2007 11:53:14 AM

We do need to concentrate on signing Derek Andersen over Jeff McInnis. DA is far more seasoned and we could probably get him for the veteran minimum that McInnis his turning his nose up at.

That way you squash the Phil Ford/Jeff McInnis feud as well.

Then, we should pick up Julius Hodge for the league minimum as a back-up PG. In the NBDL he played the point at Anaheim and had 11pts, 7 rebounds, and 12 assists per game. He's 6'7", can handle the rock, and would give us a solid back-up with local name recognition without too much of an financial investment. Gerald Wallace rode the pine in Sacramento and look how he's developed. Let's give Hodge a chance.
