« May's injury puts Bobcats in a bind | Main | Felton still shooting often, poorly »

Herrmann will be needed
Stray thoughts after a gruesome first preseason performance by the Bobcats: -- Walter Herrmann is on the outside, looking in, on the rotation. Sam Vincent is leaning toward taller guys (Ryan Hollins and Jermareo Davidson) to complement Emeka Okafor inside. I made the mistake last season of writing off Herrmann too quickly. When he got minutes in March and April, he was productive, tough and a clutch shooter. I appreciate Vincent’s concern that an Okafor-Herrmann frontcourt is awfully small. But as shorthanded as the Bobcats are inside, how can you not exploit what Herrmann provides? It’s still about three weeks before the Bobcats play a game that counts, so there’s plenty of time for Vincent to revisit Herrmann’s role. But this one baffles me. -- Gerald Wallace summed it up well, saying his team played "dummy defense’’ against the Magic. Orlando is a screen-and-roll team and Jameer Nelson made Raymond Felton look silly several times, losing him on the way to the basket. The Magic’s 60 points in the lane is a ridiculous measure of how easily Orlando got to the rim. -- Offensively, Jason Richardson looked like exactly what the Bobcats need; three times with the shot clock burning down, he saved a possession by breaking down a defender one-on-one. However, he doesn’t recover well on defense. J.J. Redick continuously created space for himself to make wide-open jump shots against Richardson. Richardson is too good an athlete to let that happen continuously. -- Matt Carroll came into camp in great shape, but his shot isn’t falling. Never thought I’d see Carroll throw up an air ball, but it happened Wednesday. -- You might wonder why Jared Dudley didn’t play. He has a sprained big toe and didn’t suit up for the game.

If Vincent doesn't play Herrmann I'm going to get ticked off. The guy averaged 20pts on a ridiculous shooting percentage for the last 20 games of the season.

Keep in mind that this was our FIRST game together pretty much. That wasn't the case for Orlando. Also, I think that Orlando will probably be the best team in our division this year, so I think there's no need to panic by any means.

I was disappointed not to get the game up here in High Point. Did ya'll get it in Charlotte?
No surprise that Felton looked silly on defense. Also no surprise that he had an incredible 1.0 AST:TO ratio and shot a tremendous 33% for the night. At least he's learned that he shouldn't take the most shots on the team.
As for Herrmann, his best position is probably SF, but we've got the two wing positions well taken care of.
Redick was able to break J-Rich down? REALLY? That's sad, and I'm a Duke fan.

Sad thing is, I don't know that he has learned not to shoot more than everyone else. I was paying attention to that early on in the game, and he didn't take his first shot till about the midway point of the 2nd quarter. It seemed like more of his rookie season, when he couldn't balance his own offense with setting up others, so he'll go a long stretch without taking a shot, then hoist up 3 or 4 in the span of about 3 minutes.
I don't know that's a sign of him learning anything. I'm still waiting for him to "get" this whole NBA thing.

Nice to see you've come around on the Herrmonster!!!

Hermann was outstanding....just to show you that sometimes those NBA players get serious when they're not in an all around star team. Miami Heat has too many superstars, and can't make up their mind about playing. Reminds me of the Dream Team....too many superstars will make you lose. I hope Hermann leads us to the playoffs!

Charlotte Mortgage, I know what you mean by super stars. They have egos. However, I have to point out that "THE" Dream Team, had a perfect record while beating opponents by an average of 44 pts per game. I sure hope that Herrmann plays more. He was awesome at the end of the season. I still think that having him at PF and Okafor at C may be our best team. I guess coach wants to give Hollins a chance to sink or swim. I can understand that. A lot can happen during pre-season.

Me and Bobcat Johnson are going out tonight to chase some white tail. We both got our divorce. (Bob had to pay 1 Billion dollars) I wish someone would help us out and buy the naming rights to our arena. If I didn't know better I would think everyone is ashamed to be associated with us black fellas. (We did fire all the white guys in the office).

Herrmann should be played more minutes if you want him to be as sharp as he finished last season. The former coach is still with the team, so he had probably said this to the present coach. Maybe Vincent is testing the new fellas, or some possible retools... that's what offseason is for anyway. Walter Should be considered as a starter, or at least give him the chance (for a few weeks)to test if he's at that level.

I hate these lame ass haters that have nothing else to do but beat off at their computers and down grade the team that reps their city and state. The WEBMASTER really needs to delete these comments or simply ban their IP address from postin on these forums. It really take away from the purpose of the whole forum. If you dont like the Cats or how they are ran...why dont go down to the arena and tell the front offices face to face how you feel. Write a letter, do something, but dont waste others time reading you lil poo putt ass post. Besides posting on the net about how much you dislikes the Cats...what have you down to TRULY voice your opinion? Who knows how you feel..better yet, WHO CARES?..If you've done nothing..then sit back, STFU, and enjoy the ride...-Chan

It seems Ray Ray was out for my heart AGAIN last night. 20% from the field on TEN shots, four And1StreetBALLIN'-style turnovers, and that baby blue soul that'll make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

I'm new to this blog so I don't know if you have already thoroughly vented on the subject of business 14 carrying the bulk of the tv casts...I've got directv and can't get this channel...I would have to buy T/W digital cable just to get that obscure station which is about a quarter notch above C...whatchamadoodle that bob used the first season...talk about shutting out your fan base
as to Walter, the guy has hands that make a bball look like a neck tumor...he scooped to the hoop like a poor man's Dr J...and came up big on Deeing up the passing lanes...he has to have 25 min a game minimum

How dare you james good. I did what I thought was best regarding tv games. I thought if few people could watch on tv then they would come to the unnamed arena I didn't pay for. I was wrong no one comes to the games. What is a black racist to do?

I am completely at a loss as to why Herrmann would not be a starter. The Bobcats went 7-5 with him starting at the 4.
His ridiculous 58.5% FG% and ability to score all over the floor (19.6 ppg and 2.3 3pg @ 48%) is invaluable and now with J-Rich to take more attention off him he'll be close to automatic from 3pt land.
In reality his starting numbers look vastly similar to Stojakovic in his prime.
Please Sam, look at the numbers - they pick you starting 5 for you...

Well sadly Adam hurt his knee, so maybe that will get Herrman more minutes. He plays all out like Wallace... so to me he really deserves them.
