Contract issue unlikely to affect Okafor
It’s seldom a good thing when the team’s star is in limbo regarding his contract.
But if anyone can proceed with class, intelligence and dignity, it’s Emeka Okafor.
I found out Thursday that Okafor could have made more than $12. million a season, had he signed the offer the Charlotte Bobcats made. Instead, he decided to shoot higher, playing out his contract to become a restricted free agent in July.
I believe Okafor when he says he’s not looking to leave the Bobcats. That’s not hard to believe, because days ago, when I asked him if he’s at all rattled by the absence of a contract agreement, he said he’s far more concerned about the start of the season than his contract status.
If you know Okafor, you know that’s just how he’d look at things.
Okafor called it "goal-oriented" Thursday. That’s the same goal-orientation that had him graduating from Connecticut in three years with the kind of grades we’d all love for our kids to have. Okafor wants a maximum contract because it would represent being elite in basketball.
I don’t think he’ll get there – I suspect he’s close to maxing out his talent already – but I so admire his drive. I do know this; it’s not about the money, or at least it’s not about selfishness. The guy and his family are so into charity, he’ll give away half of whatever he makes.
Sure, Okafor likes nice things – don’t we all? – but he’s more comfortable in a college sweatshirt than an Armani suit. I could see him taking a huge chunk of whatever he eventually makes and saving the blood supply in Africa (that’s his pet project, in case you don’t know.)
The Bobcats and Okafor’s representatives are on good terms, which is important, because at some time, they’ll have to make a deal. You can’t lose this guy defensively, or this team takes three steps back.
So let it play out, find a fair number in the middle, and don’t let egos interfere with good sense.

Bobcat Johnson is all about investing in black businesses. This would be a great chance to do that. Investing in Okafor would help his black team, help Okafor and help Africa. I think that is a hat trick (Black Every Time) Bobcat Johnson.

Investing in black businesses has taken Johnson a lot farther in life than Richardson investing in white trash fast food chains :(

In addition, Okafor seems not to have the kind of game that would really be effected by a play to attract FA attention. I don't think Okafor would take a bad shot to fill up his stat line under any circumstance, and the rest of his game is built upon such solid fundamentals that I have no doubt he'll be ready and willing to give 100% on the court as long as he's healthy.

Bob Johnson and the Bobcats are here to stay. Sorry to inform all of the haters. Nice to know you keep up with Bobcats news though. If you didn't care just a little bit, you wouldn't have read the article or made your post. :)

kevin is sick. will makes a good observation.
I could suggest lots of charities for you BET (Blatantly Envious Trash) fans who think that money should be given away. We know that you have much better judgement than Johnson, that is why you have so much more money than he has. :)

How DARE Sam Vincent let Jeff McInnis play with Raymond Felton??? This will only stunt Felton's development into an All-NBA point guard with elite A:TO and shooting percentages. I wish he knew as much about basketball as the people on this blog do.

What a great night...no rap...do you realize the Bobcats even played some big band music tonight? The atmosphere was more like the Hornets than any game I've ever attended. I know it was painful for BJ to sit at center court and listen to Michael Buble's "Fly Me To The Moon" rather than Nelly's "It's Gettin' Hot in Here (So, Take Off All Your Clothes)" Painful.
And, I'm sure all those skanks, riff raff and crack heads from the bus station left early after buying their tix for $3 outside the Arenea and ten having to listen to normal music during the game. Consolation Prize: you did get a shirt.
Bob, are you actually trying to get some white folk in the building?
By the way, Felton's shot looked much better, Okafor did lay it out and the team really, really hustled. Don't know how long any of it will last, but last night was fun. I got my money's worth....for a change.

Maybe Bobcat (Black Every Time) Johnson realizes that it takes the white's money to survive in sports.

WOW! It really surprises me at the level of intelligence some people with computers actually have. Next to none! They played rap music last night and they played everthing else. It was a good balance and I enjoyed myself. I'm glad to know that b/c you heard Micheal Buble, you had a nice time. Come on back now ya hear! Whatever it takes for you to support the team!
What is normal music? Are yo saying that it's not normal to play hiphop music? We all have different taste in music, but don't say your type of music is normal b/c that's a very narrowminded comment.
The comments you read on this site makes you think the KKK is headquatered in Charlotte!

I really get sick of all the idiots out there making "dumb" statements about Bob Johnson's "black team". It's not about skin color, it's all about "talent"!! Oh,and by the way, at last count there are 4 white players on this team. Show me another NBA team as racially balanced. Does it really upset everyone that a black man owns the team? Gee, maybe we need George Shinn back.

Okafor belongs in Charlotte. Good player, good in the community, and part of a good young nucleus. Lock him up.
