Varejao not on Bobcats' radar

Stray thoughts in the midst of the Bobcats’ four-game losing streak:

-- A couple of you have e-mailed, asking if I could picture the Bobcats making a play for restricted free agent Anderson Varejao. Frankly, no. The Bobcats aren’t big spenders or risk takers.

Varejao hasn’t re-signed with Cleveland because he wants a lot of money and a lot of years. He’s more of a complementary energy guy than a proven starter, but he wants to be paid like a borderline star.

I’m not sure adding Varejao would clinch the playoffs for the Bobcats, and I can’t see them paying that kind of money for anything less than a difference-maker.

-- If Jared Dudley keeps playing like he has, he deserves to be second-team all-rookie. The guy has a mature understanding of the game that you don’t see much among first-year players with kids turning pro so early. He gets possessions, he passes intelligently and he makes open shots.

-- Primoz Brezec has had some of his better games (offensively, at least) against Shaquille O’Neal. Shaq isn’t willing to stray far from the basket on defense these days, so Brezec gets plenty of open jump shots on the pick-and-pop play.

If not Varejao then who? The glaring weekness on this team, aside from inconsistent half-court play, is the lack of depth in the front court. I agree about Dudley, he seems to be a solid ballplayer.

I agree with your view on andy. im from ohio and everybody is sic and tired of this guy and this story. he wants a reported 8-12 million over what 4-6 years i believe (those numbers may be wrong). Andy is a back-up at best. He doesn't have an outside shot and shows periods of reckless shooting. He can play defense and is very impressive drawing charges. He is a scrappy big man that can and will get under the nails of the oppostion. But in order to win you must score points which andy has not shown me. I guess the point of this comment is to thank you for helping Clevelands arguement that andy is overrating himself and it is hurting his chances of playing this season. For the Cavaliers or anybody!!!

I agree on the Dudley take. I hated him when he was in college, and I cringed when the Cats got him on Draft Day, but he's going to be a solid player for a long time.
On the Cats need for frontcourt depth, they need to pull the trigger on something sometime soon, or this season is going to slip away very, very quickly. Vincent came out and said that he thinks that it's going to be several weeks more before Othella Harrington can see major court action. He's already been a deadweight sitting in streetclothes on the bench for the past two months, and it could be another month before he's healthy enough to see the court again. Let him sit in streetclothes at his own home. Come on M.J. and Bob! Take the hit! Cut Harrington, so that you could free up a roster spot to sign someone. There's a few guys sitting out there that is not currently signed.

I agree with the Dudley comments as well. Caleb, I hated him in college too, b/c I'm a Heels fan. He always seems to be in the right place.

I agree with everything that LeeL said. He's right 100%. I absolutely concur with that opinion.

I think they should attack jalen Rose so he can run the point better than Felton and also try to give Sprewell a workout to see whats in him

I have heard Chris Webber's name thrown around for other teams with deep playoff potential -Cleveland, Dallas, LA Lakers, Back to Detroit - Given 20-25 minutes/game he has proven he is still a more than serviceable front court presence. Any chance we go after Webber - would he even play on a borderline playoff potential team, or is he just ring shopping ala Charles Barkley/Karl Malone. Will we have to go D-League shopping again and bring up the next Ryan Hollins? Up until last week I thought that would be John Bunch 7'2/310 blocking machine out of Monmouth - but it looks like he didn't even make a D-League Roster - anyone know what happened to that guy?

Varejo isn't a possibility because he want 9-10mil a season for like 5years. He isn't even close to being worth that much. He's overrated and he's a flopper. Webber and Rose aren't options because they want to go to proven teams who can win a ring. I say that we need to dump Harrington for someone who can contribute or trade a 2nd rd pick to get someone from another team. Who are the big men free agents out there?

Posted by: GJ | Nov 29, 2007 8:18:54 PM

PJ Brown is still out there, I don't know if he would want to come back to Charlotte or not. Olowokandi, Laettner, Dale Davis, Tsakalidis, Fortson, Marc Jackson, Medvedenko, and Potapenko are also out there.

only thing that i can say is that Anderson Varejao is such an overrated player! He also made a mistake back in game 3 of the nba finals when he was just in front of the basket & he couldn't even make the shot.. & now he's asking money that has a price like a starting player?? oh c'mon anderson! you've got to be kidding me. . .

His agent wants Varejao to be paid like Milicic and Nocioni. What's wrong with demanding to be paid what the market said a guy is worth?

Nice to see you nail another one on the head, Bonnell.

When you post a blog about how the Bobcats are never going to trade for Richardson (and they do), or how the Bobcats are never going to be interested in Varejao (and they are, even if it's all just a show).......does it suck for you as much as I think it would suck for me if I was supposed to be an "insider" yet always got everything wrong?

Rick has to be embarrassed about this story! Just another example of the mistakes made by Rick "I know nothing about the Bobcats" Bonnell.

LOL at this headline being on the same page as the story about Varejao being signed to the offer sheet.

Rick Bonnell? More like Rick BonFAIL!
