Dudley to replace Brezec in starting lineup

Coach Sam Vincent was patient, more patient than Primoz Brezec’s performance justified.

Monday the patience wore out when Vincent confirmed at morning shootaround he is replacing Brezec in the Bobcats’ starting lineup with Jared Dudley.

Brezec, the 7-1 center the Bobcats found in the expansion draft, has been bad this season. He knows it and doesn’t make excuses, so he couldn’t have been surprised by this move.

Brezec has failed to score in four of the past six games, and his strength is offense, not defense. He was doing little, so he was playing little. He had started every game this season, but that was as cameo a starting role as it gets in the NBA.

Vincent stuck with it as long as he did, I surmise, because he doesn’t want to use Emeka Okafor primarily as a center. When Okafor gets in foul trouble – and that’s more likely at center – it drastically reduces this team’s chance of winning.

Of course when you’re on a five-game losing streak, your chances of winning are already slim. So with Ryan Hollins hurting with a sore shoulder and Othella Harrington ineffective because of a knee injury, Vincent subs a 6-foot-7 small forward for a 7-1 center.

It’s worth trying. Gerald Wallace has to play power forward again. He gives up a lot of weight and takes a pounding, but he’s proven to be effective there. Dudley is an intense defender and a remarkably mature rookie.

You can say that’s about him staying in college all four years, and that’s probably a factor, but it’s more than that; Dudley is basketball wise.

I saw it in that one preseason game he played, after injuring his foot in the preseason. Recognizing he’d be the fifth offensive option in almost any group for now, he focused all his energy on getting possessions, either with rebounds or grabbing in loose balls.

Coaches love guys who do that. It keeps players of limited athletic ability – and that includes Dudley – in the league a long time.

Vincent should have discussed this one with Procton before benching Brezec. We are doomed!!!

Boy, starting Dudley sure was the spark we needed! If we hadn't gotten him and his hustle in the lineup, we might have lost by 30!

About time, even my 11-year-old knew he needed to sit.

The problem ain't a guy that usually gets 5 minutes then sits the rest of the game.

Inserting Dudley / going to a smaller lineup will be beneficial in the long run, but it's doing nothing to address our real problem, which is a lack of leadership from our coaching and PG positions.

Whoever thought it was wise to turn this team over to a rookie coach who had little coaching experience at a pro level, a young PG that has been continually disappointing at actually running and directing an offense, and Jeff McInnis ........ well, they should be fired.

Actually, the process should have happened a year earlier so the "getting to know you" growing pains could have been going on last year instead of this year.

Furthermore, the pg has been a big part of our wins and success this year. He's the barmoter and has been off the last few games, but he sets the tone for the team. Staying with the status quo one more year would not have done anything for the future and by staying with it a year too long has folks frustrated b/c we haven't hit our full stride in year 1 of the new era.

The decisions to keep Primo and Othella over Jake (toughness and spot up shot)and/or Ely (post scorer) continue to plague us in the frontcourt. As long as we use the cap situation wisely and let them go after this year, it will work out. But for this year, it's hampering us. I just hope that Okafor realizes that he can't get "help" if he doesn't agree to a reasonable contract, which he has already been offered.

I do think the MJ needs to seriously take an overall look and be committed to his job as he says he is. It is evident that this team needs a back-up PG (they let Brevin Knight walk) and they should've kept Voskhul & Ely instead of getting rid of both of them. Now they are paying the price and it looks like it's going to be a long season. Harrington stays hurt, Hollins isn't ready and Primo is in the wrong kind of offense. Maybe MJ should party less and show us that "so-called" desire to be the best at any cost which he seems reluctant to do.

Varejao is on the Bobcats' radar, Rick, because they just signed him.
Cavs now have a week to match the offer sheet.

Get better sources or take the next few plays off, my friend!

I sure hope we're not overpaying for Verajao...

I'd have to say that I'm not very happy with the offensive production this year at all. We are relying too much on the fast break and 3 point shots. I was more of a fan of the Bernie style of play with good hard-nosed defense builds offense.

I have not been a big fan of Vincent so far, and it appears that he hasn't found the right mixture of players on the court. I truly believe we have the players to be much more competitive than what we have been, and therefore the blame should lay with the coach Vincent. Not enough movement on offense, too much standing around, and too much reliance on the 3 point shot. It makes more than if we have a inside outside game, which we don't.

Disgruntled Fan

Well maybe we can make the playoffs next year. Wait wasn't that what they told us last year. Same old story. We are no better than the Panthers.

Bobcats were a better team last year when they went small. If Golden State can do it, why can't the Bobcats?

Wallace actually puts up better numbers at the 4 rather than the 3. Take a look at his numbers from last year to this year. Lower FG%, more TOs. The guy loves it in the block and being able to take his man one-on-one.

For mine, Vincent is a very average coach and the Bobcats took a huge risk taking a rookie coach when really what the team needed was a hard nosed vet coach who knows defence.
