Davidson going for overdue D-League stint

The Bobcats will announce this afternoon that they're sending rookie Jermareo Davidson to their developmental-league affiliate in Sioux Falls, N.D.

Good move, and probably an overdue one, by the Bobcats.

The Bobcats nearly sent Davidson to the D-league earlier this season, only to rescind that decision when they made the 2-for-1 trade that swapped Primoz Brezec and Walter Herrmann for Detroit's Nazr Mohammed.

Although coach Sam Vincent wanted Davidson to get the experience the D-league offers, he figured he needed Davidson here as a practice player. Except, as it turns out, the Bobcats hardly ever hold full-scale practices these days, in order to rest the core players' legs.

Davidson has played in only five of the team’s last 29 games, so he’s not getting experience in Charlotte. And with the team spending most of the next two months on the road, the Bobcats are even less likely to practice much.

So good call, sending Davidson out for some playing time. That certainly was productive for Ryan Hollins, when he was a rookie last season.

I wonder if this means we're gonna fill the open roster spot created in the Nazr trade.

So that leaves them with TWO open roster spots. Are they planning on doing something about that or will the penny-pinching continue?

Good move. I liked JD2's (Dudley is JD1) low post offense, in that he actually had low post offense, but he wasn't getting PT and we might as well get him some work in the NBDL

Bob Johnson needs to send his entire team and coaching staff to a developmental league.

By the way those Hornets looked tough last night, over the blazers.

It actually doesn't open up a roster spot, fsv. Davidson still counts as a signed player.

Actually there are no good players that Charlotte can simply go out and sign. It simply does not work that way. I'm sure that fans in Minnesoto would love to just go out and sign Gerald Wallace while keeping Al Jefferson but just isn't that simple. Right now, we are better developing what we have. I still believe that we would be more effective playing Mohammed and Okafor at the same time along with Wallace, Richardson and Felton. Hollins could gain valuable experience backing up Mohammed and Okafor. Significant minutes could/should go to Carroll and also more to Dudley. Guys would be fresher if they didn't have to play 40+ minutes per game and cutting that to 32-35 would give the youngsters more quality development time.

Jimm...the fact that people want to keep up the illusion we can still make the playoffs leaves no room for "youngsters" getting "development time." Anybody knows that a roster is best constructed when paying studs like Jeff McInnis and Othella Harrington.

Posted by: Michael Procton | Jan 25, 2008 2:09:04 AM

We're still dealing with cap money from old "good gesture" deals when we still had a fraction of the league's cap in our first seasons. Mr. Procton you fail to realize that the Bobcats play in a conference where only 6 teams are above .500. Its not easy to make the playoffs but the Bobcats have 40 games to get it together. 20-20 to close out the season might get the 8 seed.

I'm not saying the D-League is full of stars waiting to be signed. The fact is they're playing with 2 short on their active roster. This puts them at another disadvantage over the competition.

The first spot should have been filled w/ a 3rd point guard so McInnis doesn't have to play as much or so they can be an injury emergency. Same for this open spot - at least get a warm body in there in case of injury or so the starters can get some rest when there's a blowout.

Davidson is STILL on the roster!!!

Making the playoffs is a possibility, yes, but they are 2 - AWFUL on the road, and almost 2/3 of these games will be on the road. Time for another lottery pick.

The trade with Detroit was essentially a 1 for 1. At this time Mohammed has had more of a impact with the Bobcats than Hermmann is having with Detroit (I know, two different team circumstances).

What would making the playoffs do for this franchise? This City? Perhaps what the Bobcats need is another lottery pick. I can say this, I was living in D.C. when the Wizards returned to the playoffs and it is a really cool thing to be in a place when the home team is in the playoffs.

I am glad that Davidson was sent to the D-League. If he can bulk up and work on his low post defense, he will be even more of an asset next season.

I went to both the Dallas and San Antonio games. The players played hard, but not very smart. Shooting against Dallas, percentage-wise, was not very good. Richardson got to the foul line a lot by driving the ball, which was great. What killed us in the stretch is the lack of a true point guard. Dishing the ball is an art and we got sloppy in the fourth quarter. Whenever Felton or McGinnis pass a couple of times and then jack up a three (with no rebound) we lose momentum. Against San Antonio, we just looked like we were coached by a high school coach. Don't you think the players get a little discouraged by indecisive and inexperienced coaching after laying it out there? A couple of quick obserservations: we never get the calls and Wallace plays his brains out...no matter what.

I like the move but am struggling how the team manages the wear and tear with only 10 players...1 open spot, 1 D league and 3 injurys

Can anyone seriously say that releasing Brevin Knight was a good move for this franchise, given the fact that there is a glaring need @ PG now?

Posted by: northcliq | Jan 25, 2008 11:34:45 AM

Charlotte didn't play last night, but since Indiana lost last night, Charlotte moves up from 2.5 games out of 8th to 2.0 games out of 8th. Just a friendly reminder that its not necessary to go 60-22 to make the playoffs in the East.

Posted by: JamesQC | Jan 25, 2008 12:21:06 PM

This ISN'T an open spot, FSV...Davidson counts as a signed player, so we can't replace him on the roster. And if any of you really think we're going to make the playoffs with 65% of our games on the road (and our .133 winning percentage there), you might want to get that cranium checked out.

Posted by: Michael Procton | Jan 25, 2008 5:44:32 PM

Absolutely the right move, north...he was holding back Raymond Felton's development, and he's blossomed into an All-NBA point guard without the burden of Knight on the roster.

There are no FAT LADIES singing yet!

Until we are statistically out, I'm not giving up. This is not BOSTON of 06-07.

Posted by: CEREBRUM | Jan 25, 2008 7:04:01 PM

My bad, I thought this was the NBA equivalent of MLB sending a player to the minors.

Still should have a spot open from the Nazr trade though - no?

Posted by: firesamvincent | Jan 26, 2008 11:47:07 AM

Yes...there is one open spot, but I'm willing to bet Bob Johnson won't be interested in spending the money to put a body on the court. As for the "fat ladies", what good will it do for us to go the the playoffs and get swept before crowds of 12,000 on national TV?

Posted by: Michael Procton | Jan 26, 2008 5:10:46 PM

Well Michael, you have to start somewhere.

The best teacher for this team right now is experience. Making the playoffs would help them get to the next level.

Would you prefer them getting swept this year or next year?

Posted by: CEREBRUM | Jan 26, 2008 10:01:59 PM

How is the P&L this year Bob?

Posted by: bobcan't fan | Jan 26, 2008 10:37:16 PM

I'd prefer we get a top 10 pick so we can finally get a real point guard.

Posted by: Michael Procton | Jan 26, 2008 11:41:38 PM

u lose to philli at home and philli was on a back to back. It is frustrating watching this team who does have talent. #1 you dont give Nazi the ball with under 2 minutes and down by 8. #2 Felton and Mcginnis do not belong on an nba court, at least Carrol showed up last night. #3 Coaching is horrible Okafor was dominating the first half with sky hooks and post ups and then u stop going to him in the second half. Jordan ruined the wiz by trading away ben wallace racheed wallace and richard hamilton and drafted horrible picks. If the cats don't change soon the franchise will move to oaklahoma
