Opponents stifle Carroll, Bobcats

The decline in the Bobcats’ offensive output of late has been dramatic. In their five-game winning streak that ended Wednesday, the Bobcats averaged 107 points on 46 percent shooting. In the three losses that followed, they averaged 91 points on 43 percent shooting.

Matt Carroll is probably the best barometer of this. He told me after Sunday’s loss in Cleveland that he hasn’t had a wide-open look at the basket in two games. Carroll’s productivity is somewhat dependent on opposing teams doubling down on the post, essentially leaving him alone along the perimeter.

Consider this: Against Atlanta, Washington and Dallas, Carroll made 14 of 18 attempts from 3-point range. That can’t help but draw an advance scout’s attention, and apparently the Houston Rockets and Cleveland Cavaliers made it a priority to stay with Carroll along the perimeter.

Seemingly that should benefit Emeka Okafor in the post. He exploited that against the Rockets, going 10-of-19 from the field for 23 points. But Okafor was a nonfactor offensively against the Cavaliers, shooting 4-of-13 for 10 points. He also was limited to four free throws, making two.

I think Okafor’s poor foul-shooting – 57 percent this season – means he sometimes draws fewer double-teams. Opponents know that if he beats you with a move, you can foul him rather than give up a dunk and not be hurt so much with free throws.

In the Cavaliers game, it wasn't the oopponent that shut down Matt Carroll. When the Bobcats made a run at the end, it was Sam Vincent that shut him down because Carroll was on the bench until it was too late to make much difference.

Why the hell would any team double down off of Matt Carroll and onto Chuck Okafor?? You really don't need to double a guy that has ZERO post moves and bricks layups and dunks all game! I swear at the Golden State game I watched him miss no less than 7 layups or point blank shots 1 foot from the rim, no exaggeration. And Stan made an excellent point, if Okafor somehow did manage to make a move you just foul him and watch him brick free throws.
4 of 13, 2 of 4 from the line, Bobcats lose. Give that guy some Dwight Howard money!

I happened to attend the Houston game. My brother-in-law kept talking about being worried as the Rockets kept falling behind in the first half. I kept telling him not to worry. The Bobcats would find a way to lose. This is a team that is just going through the motions waiting for the season to end. Felton is the biggest quiter of the bunch. He threw up a bunch of wide open bricks, lost the ball on stupid plays a number of times, and just plain let the Houston guards toy with him on defense. I really wanted to be a season ticket holder for a long time but it is all over for me. This group is not worth the time or money.

vs. Memphis
Okafor 3-6 FG, 6 rebounds, 4 TO's 8pts, 22 minutes
The least amount of minutes played among starters yet not in foul trouble (2 fouls).

He's good.

Oh and I wanted to give Procton some stats on his man crush Primoz Brezec, but unfortunately he didn't get off the bench for Toronto last night, zero minutes. SOLID Procton!

This inconsistency is killing me. I don't care how tired you are, you can't lose to Memphis. The Grizzlies barely have enough talent to be called a professional team.

WOW...a blowout by Memphis??!! Come one guys..this is getting ridiculous!! I guess they have given up on the season the same way Pat Riley did to the Heat...anyone want my tickets to the Miami game this SAT???

Hey, at least we've got our point guard of the future. Raymond Felton will lead the way like we always knew he could...right down the drain.
