« Golden idea: Move Nuggets to East | Main | Okafor, Felton in midst of fade »

March 21, 2008

Tired doesn't explain this trend

   Questions to ponder:

  1.    What happens at halftime these days? In their past two third quarters, (versus the less than imposing Memphis Grizzlies and Indiana Pacers), the Bobcats were outscored 59-32 and shot a combined 13-of-35. I don't dismiss they're tired from all this travel, but that doesn't explain all this away.

2.     Emeka Okafor still plays for this team, right? In those losses to Memphis and Indiana he TOTALED 10 points and nine rebounds and took all of seven shots.

Coach Sam Vincent on Okafor: "We're trying to get the ball to Emeka and for some reason, the harder we try, the less we do it."

Okafor needs to be more active and assertive in demanding the ball, particularly on the pick-and-roll. That was the Bobcats' best offensive option earlier this season. Now teams overplay point guard Raymond Felton, because they're clearly more concerned with Felton driving or passing to Jason Richardson or Matt Carroll than with Okafor rolling to the basket.

3. Will we see more of Ryan Hollins? He played significant minutes (21 1/2 against Indiana) for the first time in weeks. He performed, with 11 points, three rebounds and a block. I sure hope, with the playoffs no longer realistic, this team uses the remaining games to explore what youngsters Hollins and Jermareo Davidson can be. To do anything else would be irresponsible.

That's right, the Bobcats need to use more the pick-and-roll with Felton and Okafor and, it's true, Okafor had, and continues having, games when he's too passive offensively. Still, isn't that the coach's responsibility to make sure the players run the plays they should run - including using the "bigs" offensively a lot more? Instead of working to make that happen, Sam Vincent is simply benching Okafor (he played 43 minutes in the last two disappointing games). And what about Nazr Mohammed's offensive contribution? In these last two games Mohammed played a total of just 32 minutes, in which he scored 16 points (at 66% shooting from the field)! Why doesn't he get 32 minutes per game for such offensive production ?! Coach's decision, of course... Briefly, Sam Vincent usually prefers to bench the "bigs", instead of giving them more minutes, call plays for them, and make sure that players execute. For the rest, I certainly agree that Ryan Hollins and Jermareo Davidson should have the opportunity to gain some more playing experience in the remainder of this season.

Didn't Vincent play PG?

Maybe he can suit up and make sure Okafor gets the ball more that way.

Will, please re-read Rick Bonnell's article; it refers to Emeka's passivity, not moving to make himself an offensive threat - which unfortunately happens in too many games. On the other hand, there's also the example of many other games in which Raymond and Emeka ran the pick-and-roll quite fine. It is the coach's ultimate responsibility to make sure his players execute consistently - not just when they feel like it.

The primary problem lies with the coach, the coach and the coach. Sorry, but we have the talent to be at least .500 in the East. We don't need a study committee to figure out the fix.

The coach told his players earlier in the year to get the ball to Okafor more, and the response was Jeff McInnis telling the papers that he needed to get yelled at more to do what the coach asked of him.

Felton didn't comment one way or the other.

I don't know what more the coach is supposed to do, besides tell his players to pass it to the big men more.

Hence, why I said...maybe if he wants the ball to go to the big men more, he should play PG?

If the players don't listen to the coach, what is the coach supposed to do then?

I think it is time for management to realize that Okafor and Felton will never be more than mediocre players in this league. That said, if Okafor is offered more than 8 million or so a year this offseason, we should look to sign and trade him or just let him walk. Same goes for Felton the year after. These guys aren't worth keeping and have shown very little improvement since they have come into the league.

Okafor has a tendency to vanish during games, as he has this past week. Felton is a shoot first guard who can't shoot and does not do a good job of distributing the ball either.

If we sign these guys to long-term deals we'll be straddling the fence between a lottery team and an 8th seed who will get knocked out every year for the next 5-6 years.

Here's hoping that doesn't happen!

david has a good point. Sign and trade Okafor this offseason and get what you can for him.

Don't pull a Bickerstaff and start winning meaningless games at the end of the year so we can get a top 3 draft pick and take OJ Mayo, then dump Felton off on some gullible team that still thinks he can play PG.

Did anyone see Adam Morrison at the davidson-gonzaga game? Damn that guy looks more and more like a street corner drug dealer every time I see him. What a loser.

What this team needs is a new head coach.
Vincent is way over hi head at this. I think he would make a great missionary. Best of luck Sam.

Will someone please kick me in the nuts? I think it will feel good.

Posted by: Greg Paulus | Mar 22, 2008 2:56:00 PM

What are nuts? I don't know my name.

Posted by: Tyler Hansbrough | Mar 22, 2008 2:57:35 PM

I'll show you Tyler, I would love to rest mine on your chin you silly little goosey. Wojo is so hot.

Posted by: Greg Paulus | Mar 22, 2008 3:55:31 PM

haha, Duke sucks so much ass. Should have lost to a #15 crap team then gets dominated by a football school in the 2nd round. They really didn't deserve a #2 seed at all and just proved it.
Why does Paulus have those black eyes all the time?

Posted by: Coach K | Mar 22, 2008 4:34:54 PM

Hey, at least we don't have to see those THUGS from Maryland in the tournament. "GO BACK TO THE GHETTO," Gist.

Posted by: Carolina Fans | Mar 22, 2008 4:38:24 PM

Google 'Arabian Goggles'. That will explain why Paulus has those black eyes.

Posted by: Pete | Mar 22, 2008 6:39:38 PM

Greg, I might like that, but as soon as you breathed on me, somebody would probably call a foul.

Posted by: Tyler Hansbrough | Mar 22, 2008 7:40:03 PM

Oh Tyler, not only will I breathe on you I'll give you a dirty sanchez as well.
Who do you think is more gay...me, Christopher Collins, or Steve Blowjobkowski? Please say me big boy.

Posted by: Greg Paulus | Mar 22, 2008 9:14:31 PM

I'm not sure, Greg, but I was able to find this list of gay athletes with two of my boys on it, Kris Lang and Jason Capel: http://www.outsports.com/picturethis/2001feb.htm

Man what a loser you are. Posting some link from 2001 that doesn't even work. That's about enough out of you thanks.

Sorry...I don't no what all these buttons is four.

Posted by: Tyler Hansbrough | Mar 23, 2008 8:25:28 PM

With all this free time I think Brian Davis, Christian and I are going to get real close. They want to play a little game of tummy sticks. Sounds like fun to me!

Looks like the Observer picks and choses who they want to "kill or fill" blog space with...really really bad blog Observer...do your job and "keep it clean" !

Hey Jason...I'm not sure if you're aware, but I doubt RobCat or FoH (Friend of Himself) are avid readers of this blog.

Posted by: Michael Procton | Mar 25, 2008 8:33:58 AM

Hey Proctilon...was at the game Saturday night and saw a close up of Morrison..was it me or is he starting to look like somebody's REALLY ugly sister? I'm all for "do your own thing", but sheesh...this guy is starting to look nasty beyond words.
NOW STARING..at the end of the B'cats bench...Sean "Crisco" May, the "everything tastes better in fat" Wonder Boy and Adam "Dippity Doo" Morrison, the NBA's first female impersonator....damn Jordon's doin' a helluva job on the leadership front!Taken a page right out of Ringling Bros Barnum & Bailey. If this is what $10 million buys us as Head of Basketball Ops....Bob Johnson aint the busniness man I thought he was...he should have insisted on $20 million!
