Bobcats' workout focused on 4 guards

The Bobcats kept Friday's pre-draft workout short and sweet, quickly putting four guards who could be potential second-round targets in the June 26 draft through their paces. Charlotte picks 38th overall in the second round, and it may be that none of the four will climb that high.

The best of today's bunch appears to be 6-4 Bryce Taylor of Oregon, who is turning up in the latter half of the second round in a number of mock drafts. He was joined at the workout by Georgia's Sundiata Gaines, Nevada's Marcelus Kemp and Bo McCalebb of New Orleans.

The team will take the weekend off, then finish bringing in players on Monday through Wednesday.

Oh, and this is interesting; at the Orlando pre-draft camp Stanford center Brooke Lopez said he would not work out for any team below No.4 in the draft. Now many mocks have Lopez falling to the Bobcats at No. 9. Think he might change his mind and work out for a few more teams?

I don't care what he decides as long as we don't draft him. If we're not trading the pick, take Randolph if available. We need a versatile PF. Mek should stay at center unless he somehow develops a great jump shot this summer.

I feel ya Eric..Lopez was unimpressive to me and would be ANOTHER wasted pick...I like the idea of a young PG that can back up Ray and hopefully push him to max out his potential (which I hope is not already tapped out)...

I watched some more film on the Randolph kid and I like him but he obviously needs to put on more weight..with athleticism being prevalent in NBA big men right now..he would fit the mold perfectly!

I like this Stan guy. Since the "hate B. Lopez" wagon was taking off I figured I jump on it when there's good seats left. He seems potential less IMO. If no impact player falls into our lap I say trade down and grab a foreigner/BPA.

Gotta love the part about Lopez snubbing anything below 4. And a glance at a few mock draft boards have this guy going directly to us at 9. I think he has Chris Mihm written all over him. Please jordan PLEASE sell this pick if he is the "best player available" at 9.

Posted by: brendan | Jun 20, 2008 4:33:27 PM

chances of impact player availability at 9 are slim & none. of course there are players taken late who shine when they we not expected to, but I just dont see it here at this pick. the bobcats need a player who will contribute right away. trades are the better option for charlotte with a team full of young prospects and a vet here and there. and with the available PF's being spoken about we need to make a move.

Brook Lopez = Roy Hibbert

can give you decent defense, rebounds, 10 or so points, solid shot blocking.

why get a player of the same type at 9 that you can at 20-25? and pay a lot more for it?

trade down and get a player(PF or PG please) and the late pick and take hibbert.

Posted by: brendan | Jun 20, 2008 4:58:10 PM

No Hibbert, then we'd have a 4 and 5 averaging 12 points each. We need a 4 that can score and defend his position and let Meka play goalie. Darrell Arthur?

Posted by: Felton+May+Morrison=we can't draft for chit | Jun 20, 2008 8:31:31 PM

Felton wasn't really a poor draft choice. The bobcats needed a PG and they picked the best one available. It's not like they chose him over Paul or Deron. He's been productive and has yet to reach his prime.

May seems like a poor choice only because of his injuries. Did you or anyone else predict that? When he's on the court he's actually quite good at providing the inside scoring and rebounding that the cats are missing. If you look at the 05 draft there aren't any players that you can say we really missed out on other the the ones that were gone before Charlotte's picks came along. Danny Granger would have probably been a better pick then May, but we can only say that in hindsight. The draft isn't exactly easy.

Morrison was the only pick that you can really say was a poor pick. We can all agree that is was Jordan's mistake, but we're far from a team that can't draft for shit.

If you're really proposing Arthur going as high as 9, I think you need to evaluate your own decision making abilities.

Thanks for actually responding to us Mr. Olson. That is something that to my knowledge Bonnell doesn't do. I guess I can't blame him with some of the comments on this blog, but I do understand some of them.

Honestly, I would appreciate Bonnell more if he wasn't so negative all of the time and didn't make the mistakes that he does in his writing/reporting.

Do you know who the Bobcats are bringing in next?

Posted by: Yeah? | Jun 21, 2008 2:32:40 AM

I don't want the Bobcats to draft Brook Lopez by any means, but I truly do not see how anyone can say he's the same player as Hibbert. Lopez is a lot more fluid, gets up and down the court much better, has more post moves and can knock down 16-18 foot jumpers more effectively than the uber-robotic Hibbert.

Posted by: say what? | Jun 21, 2008 10:44:08 AM

well 'say what', that brendan guy is just an idiot. lopez does not = hibbert and in fact they couldn't be more opposite. lopez is known for his offensive game but lacks on the defensive side of the ball.

it amazes me how people can make statements on here and be so sure that they are right when they couldn't be more wrong. dumbass.

and fyi, this isn't the nfl. "trading down" just isn't that easy outside of the top 5.

Similarly, in his column today, Bonnell says Joe Alexander = Matt Harpring. Trust me, as someone who has watched Matt play in person and spoken with him dozens upon dozens of times, the only thing he has in common with Joe Alexander is that he's a Caucasian small forward. Alexander's an elite athlete who can jump out of the gym, finishes aggressively, and barely bothers trying three-pointers (he only attempted 41 last season) because he's so adept at taking his man off the dribble and throwing it down. Harpring's a banger and a physical defender and rebounder, but he has marginal foot speed and can't jump over a sheet of paper. He almost never scores one-on-one and generally settles for layups when he gets to the rim, but he is a capable shooter (attempting almost 600 three-pointers in college).

Did Bonnell get displaced in the Observer layoffs or is he just being a lazy ass again and not doing his job?

Posted by: paul | Jun 22, 2008 3:55:59 PM

Yes, Jared, the vast majority of scouts believed that May would never be healthy. It's not like his 40 pounds of baby fat are anything new. He had back and knee problems before he ever arrived in Charlotte, and his continued lack of dedication to fitness sure didn't help.

Posted by: Michael Procton | Jun 22, 2008 9:00:43 PM

Procton, you would not be on May,s case if he played anywhere other than UNC where you seem to hold a grudge. Why did you leave UNC?

Posted by: jeff | Jun 22, 2008 9:42:47 PM

Try me...any player who plays in less than 25% of his team's games because he's too lazy to get in shape despite a multi-million dollar salary will draw my ire in an instant.

Posted by: Michael Procton | Jun 22, 2008 11:55:31 PM

I'll try you. How about any guy that doesn't have the heart to play in his team's games and decides to shut himself down despite no doctor telling him he needs to (G-hurt Gerald Wallace), also despite a much higher "mult-million dollar salary"? Talk about lazy and selfish.

Posted by: Timbo | Jun 23, 2008 7:17:39 AM

No coincidence it was in the first year of a contract year too. I would bet you everything you have he plays through the end of the season if it's a contract year.

Funny that the year he's played the most games was 2 seasons ago when his contract was up. Also funny that he still only played 72 games that year, and has never played an 82 game season.

That should draw your "ire", but instead you think this guy is the next Michael Jordan and like to think he is better than guys that will be playing on the Olympic team this year.

Posted by: Timbo | Jun 23, 2008 7:22:55 AM

sorry, meant to say first year AFTER a contract year in my original post. first year with a new contract....

Posted by: Timbo | Jun 23, 2008 7:24:54 AM

Procton, May being overweight has nothing to do with a Knee injury. I agree with you a multi million dollar contract he should have gotten in better shape. I guess 1 year of college makes you a orthopedic specialist.

Posted by: David | Jun 23, 2008 8:31:35 AM

Wallace's injuries have all been sustained ON THE COURT. May's have come because his body weight is too high for his joints to sustain. Big difference.

Posted by: Michael Procton | Jun 23, 2008 12:07:51 PM

Procton, May has had knee problems since college. The weight which I agree is too much has no bearing on his knees. Obviously Anatomy is not one of your better subjects.

Posted by: sam | Jun 23, 2008 8:35:11 PM

And Sean May has been 30+ pounds overweight since BEFORE college. Oh, and obviously anatomy isn't one of your subjects at all:

"Being overweight can put you at greater risk for knee problems."
--MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/MEDLINEPLUS/ency/article/003187.htm

David Boston flamed out of the NFL because he was too heavy for his knees to support his body weight.

More weight=more stress on your joints. Sean May is carrying as much stress for his frame as anybody in the NBA.
