Brown's influence apparent early
New Charlotte Bobcats coach Larry Brown is fond of saying players must understand the difference between coaching and criticism. Tuesday’s practices in Las Vegas demonstrated what Brown meant.
Over the course of a late-afternoon session, Brown repeatedly told Adam Morrison to run the lanes harder, on a straight line, without turning his hips before reaching where he needs to be.
Later, during a scrimmage, Brown repeatedly told Ryan Hollins to post up closer to the basket, and not settle for being pushed out of the spot where he’s best equipped to score.
Brown was correcting, not criticizing. He was changing bad habits and being meticulous, and I’m guessing Morrison and Hollins understood that. I’m confident Brown shouted their names more than others’ Tuesday because Morrison and Hollins likely are to be on this team next season.
Brown doesn’t surrender to players’ bad habits. Considering how poorly coached the team was last season, what I saw Tuesday was refreshing.
The other thing you notice about Brown’s practices is how free the assistants are to offer input. Phil Ford, Dave Hanners and LaSalle Thompson constantly took players aside to clean up errors. Ford has made D.J. Augustin his pet project, reminding the rookie point guard he can’t shy away from ordering around veterans when they’re out of position.
Assistants asserting themselves didn’t happen so much under previous coach Sam Vincent. By-and-large, the assistants were told to keep a low profile. In fact, there were orders limiting how much assistant coaches could talk to Vincent during games. (Yes, it got bizarre.)
Regarding Thompson, it’s obvious from one day of practice that his title – strength and conditioning coach – doesn’t cover his responsibilities. Thompson is the de facto big-man coach because Brown trusts the former NBA center to teach play in the post.

Great blog Bonnell! This is the kind of info that I want to know about.
I do have a question to ask though in regards to "Assistants asserting themselves didn’t happen so much under previous coach Sam Vincent. By-and-large, the assistants were told to keep a low profile. In fact, there were orders limiting how much assistant coaches could talk to Vincent during games. (Yes, it got bizarre.)"
Why didn't you report on that kind of issue during the season? Is that a reporting technique so that you will not alienate the coaching staff and make your relationship with them easier? I'm not being sarcastic or condescending, I really would like to know. Thanks

How did Orien Greene look? I hear he is great on defense. Does Larry seem to be giving him a look?

I found your article interesting and tends to "peak" my interest in the Bobcats. I have thought that since I've been in Charlotte (10 years) the best Coach has been Paul Silas, with his emphasis on Team Play. That is what I have missed most about the NBA and both Charlotte Professional Teams. Hopefully, with Larry Brown and his assistance, real basketball can be brought to the Charlotte Fans.
I look forward to more articles on the Bobcat the information regarding progress of the players.

I am glad Brown is getting on Hollins for not posting up deep enough. Hollins is tall and athletic, but his skill set is still very raw. If he comes back, I really hope he puts it all together. The Bobcats could use him to guard the athletic 4s that are prevalent in the league.

Why is Sean May not in Vegas?
Posted by: apauldds | Jul 9, 2008 8:45:57 AM
ap, he was banned from more than one daily buffet trip.

apauldds,
Las Vegas Summer League is for players with two years or less experience in the NBA, NBADL players, and rookies. Despite last year's pre-season injury that kept him on the bench for the entire season, May is not allowed to participate in the Summer League because has 'played' three years in the league.

So have Felton, Wallace, and Richardson, but they still went up there to practice. But it's not like we should be surprised to see May lacking in dedication and commitment.

My point exactly. I knew May couldn't play, but he could have followed the lead of our team leaders and gone to practice, show the coaches that he's fired up for the season.

Oh, and by the way, Doc, Orien Greene, Jackie Butler, and Donnell Harvey have more than two years experience.

Kudos Bonnell,
Something has gotten into you recently. Are you starting to like your job? Did the recent layoffs make you think about job security? Great article! This is a great Observation from Las Vegas.
Everyone claimed Brown wouldnt be the right fit, but I thought he was perfect. Brown is old school, so he's gonna show everyone how to play the right way. If he can change Felton into a more efficient point guard, I think we gotta good team.

Oh he will deifinitely make Felton better, which makes the Augustin pick all the more confusing. Why waste a lottery pick on a back-up?
Posted by: apauldds | Jul 9, 2008 12:29:04 PM
BF, nobody ever questioned Brown's coaching ability. It's his commitment that's an issue. If the Bobcats can't make the playoffs in the next two years and Brown bolts, you'll probably sing a different tune. Oh...and no, Felton won't get better, because if he can't get it in his head after three years that his job as a POINT GUARD is to distribute first and shoot second, he'll never get it.

I don't think there is any rule regarding who can play in the Vegas summer league.
Nate Robinson of the Knicks was the MVP last year in his 3rd year, and is playing in the league again for the fourth time this summer.

Felton played last year for at least a game in his third year.

It's a joke!

DJ was a great pickup b/c we didnt have anybody behind felton. NOBODY! The team is still unsure if Felton can be the PG we need. We don't need a combo guard b/c we have enough wing players. We need a floor general and that's seems to be what the team thought about when we picked DJ.
Felton has yet to display his leadership. I gave him a pass last year b/c Sam V. was really horrible. Felton has to improve his shot selection, basketball IQ, and play making ability. LB loves PG's, so if he doesnt improve under larry, then he's out the door.

Well, obviously MJ has no confidence in Felton. He tried to trade Gerald Wallace fo TJ Ford and when that fell through he picked Augustin with the 9th pick. When asked why he didn't go for Bayless, he dissed Raymond saying he was too much like him. I can't imagine what it must be like to be Felton and have the management you work for contantly messing with your head. The fact that he's been silent about it speaks volumes for what a stand-up guy he is. I say give L.B. a chance at coaching him and move him if it doesn't work out.

Fill us in on how Jamereo, Dudley and Weaver are doing.

Allen Iverson cried on TV when speaking of how much LB meant to him as a player and his development. I think Felton and Dj will be excellent under new coach...Give em time guys....We cant go anywhere but up!

Procyon, maybe if your boy felton wasnt misused as a sg so much, he wouldn't be so confused....
