Debunking a Sean May rumor

Bobcats spokesman B.J. Evans, addressing the latest internet rumor, says Sean May was NOT in Salt Lake City recently, getting some pre-trade medical examination or workout with the Jazz.

And before the next rumor arises, Evans added, Adam Morrison WAS in Salt Lake City recently, but that was to see a diabetes specialist to adjust the insulin pump he uses.

That alleged trade -- Gerald Wallace and Sean May for Carlos Boozer -- is a close enough match salary-wise to work under NBA rules. But ask yourself a skeptical question: Why would the Jazz trade an All-Star big man, a consistent 20-point/10-rebound guy, for a smaller player (Wallace) and a comparably-sized player coming off a major injury (May)?

The rule of thumb in the NBA is that quality trumps quantity and bigger (with the exception of point guard) trumps smaller. So I'm sure the Bobcats would jump at that, if available, but I strongly doubt it would make any sense for the Jazz.

what is your job procton?

anyways...we should either release felton, okafor, nazr, may, ammo, carroll, jrich, and hollins so we can make a run for lebron or just do a 3 way trade with the lakers and cavs and obtain both kobe and lebron....anyone? our team would be sick

PG -- ??
SG -- Kobe
SF -- Lebron
PF -- ??
C --- ??

i actually kinda liked the headline mike

I'll answer the skeptical question but throw one back at you.

Why would the Jazz do this? Because Boozer could bolt after next season especially in light of his prior contract dealings with Cleveland (justified or not). Many teams know this and aren't willing to pay full retail for Boozer.

The skeptical question is does Charlotte part with Gerald Wallace for someone who could only be around a year?

Posted by: Kevin | Jul 11, 2008 2:17:20 PM

Yeah, this really a reasonable swap. Boozer can opt out next year. Kirilenko has shown he is far more effective at the 4 than the 3. Gwall has a decent contract. I think it makes sense for both teams.

Posted by: Declan | Jul 11, 2008 2:49:30 PM

Too bad. So I guess between Sun. and yesterday ole Sean was just at the buffet.

Posted by: apauldds | Jul 11, 2008 3:01:00 PM

To be fair to you readers Bonnell, the one reasonable answer as the why the Jazz MIGHT consider this trade is the one that you failed to mention. It's also the answer that most of us were basing our discussion on. As has been pointed out, the Jazz may be concerned about losing Boozer if he demands max money as a free agent next year. That's a legitimate concern.

There's nothing wrong with discussing the hypothetical merits of a trade even if it most likely isn't going to happen.

Posted by: Jared | Jul 11, 2008 3:32:06 PM

Jazz would trade Boozer for contract reasons because he can opt-out.... I would think if there actually going to move someone though it would be Kirilenko.

Posted by: Yeah? | Jul 11, 2008 3:42:18 PM

It actually made sense for both teams. We need a low post scoring threat. Utah needs to move AK47 back to PF, his natural position. He is not as effective at the SF position. Utah also does not expect Boozer to be around after this year. I believe he wants to be closer to his family. If both teams were smart, they would get this done.

Posted by: Adam | Jul 11, 2008 3:43:52 PM

We have our dreamers. Don't we?

1) Wallace and May and maybe 2 Future 1st Round Draft Picks from Charlotte = Boozer. Not Wallace and May = Boozer. Because those 2 draft picks would be sufficent since the Bobcats are bound to be high picks.

2) Andrei Kirilenko & Paul Milsap are WAY BETTER PLAYERS than Wallace and May. So explain to me why you would trade one of your top players for 2 guys that aren't even better than him COMBINED, let alone better than

3) Where would Wallace fit in Utah's system? He can't play shooting guard because he's a horrible 3 point shooter. Which the Jazz likes a spot up shooter like Matt Harpring, Kyle Korver, Jeff Hornacek, Jeff Malone, etc. If he plays Small Forward, they have Andrei Kirilenko. And for that guy that say's Kirilenko is more comfortable at the 4. Before Kirilenko plays the 4, they rather put Paul Milisap there than Kirilenko because Milisap is their prototype power forward.

4) Where does Sean May fit? They have, at my count, 7-8 guys that can play Power Forward and/or Center. Some of those guys are going to stay in Europe. It's like the Bobcats trading for another point guard. IT DOES NOT MAKE SENSE.

5) Only way it makes sense is if the Bobcats automatically give up the next 2 years, 1st round draft picks, without any stipulations. I would seriously be interested because the Bobcats stink and my roster is cluttered at PF/C. And Boozer has an opt out. Why not?

Posted by: NBA GURU | Jul 11, 2008 3:55:50 PM

P.S. Andrei Kirilenko is not a POWER FORWARD. His numbers are down because everyone else is contributing. Boozer and Okur are rebounding and playing solid D. And Deron Williams is a good perimeter defender. Get your facts straight.

Kirilenko is a beastly defender. He can guard the perimeter or defend down low. He's not happy his numbers are down. But if Utah trades him, they got Kyle Korver to replace him. Why use Gerald Wallace when Primoz Brezec shoots better 3's than your perimeter guy?

Also, I'm pretty sure the Jazz will offer him Max money because Boozer plays a pivotal role in Utah's system along with Deron Williams. Did u think for one second Larry Miller doesn't know this? Did u guys ever think why Larry Miller made statues of Karl Malone-John Stockton? And why he gave the Mailman a CAR DEALERSHIP to entice him to stay in Utah. You ought to be crazy to think Larry Miller would let Boozer or Deron Williams slip away. He'd sell the whole team before he let those 2 guys go. Especially since Boozer can shoot like Malone and is as vicious as Malone.

Utah, there is no good eatin' there! I say we seek out a sign and trade with the Knicks sending Okafor, Wallace, and May(me) in exchange for Zach Randolph, David Lee, and Eddy Curry. I've never seen better food than some of the great restaurants in New York!

Posted by: Sean May | Jul 11, 2008 4:02:25 PM

EVEN I WOULD DO THIS TRADE THAT SEAN MAY PURPOSED!

Mike,

Do you really have the email address mike@yahoo.com? When did you get that 1993?

If so, very impressive. More than likely, very suspicious.

Question:
What kind of Guru would say that Korver can come anywhere close to giving you what Kirilenko does?

Answer:
A self-proclaimed one.

I actually agree with you about Kirilenko's abilities. I also agree that the Jazz would be stupid to let go of Boozer. Korver, however, is only in the NBA because he's a great outside shooter. That's his one and only skill. He can't do anything else.

Posted by: Jared | Jul 11, 2008 4:28:42 PM

Oh please...like May would want Randolph and Curry traded...they know about good eats almost as much as Snacktime.

Posted by: Michael Procton | Jul 11, 2008 4:32:56 PM

1. was that last comment really Mike Persinger? If so, wow he's uptight.

2. I can't imagine Utah doing it. I'd love to get AK47 though...

Question: Why does Jared not read everything before he opens his mouth?

Answer: Because he jumps to conclusions on things.

Korver is an easy replacement for Kirilenko. He might not bring what Kirilenko brings to the table, as in D. But has Kirilenko been forced to play D the last 2 years?

Answer: NO he hasn't. He hasn't been asked to score either because of:

a) Deron Williams playing Perimeter D and developing into a solid player.

b) Carlos Boozer score and rebound more. Along with his interior defense.

c) Paul Millsap being a bruising force when he comes off the bench.

So in theory, Yes Korver can replace Kirilenko. As in position wise, NOT SKILLWISE.

SO READ BEFORE YOU SPEAK.

P.S. For all you well wishers, DID U GUYS EVER THINK WHY PAUL MILLSAP WAS DRAFTED?

Here's a little info:

He played at Lousiana Tech University. As I recall a guy by the name of Karl Malone went there and wasn't Malone a favorite guy of Larry Miller, the OWNER?

Also, Paul Millsap is the only player in NCAA history to lead the nation in rebound 3 CONSECUTIVE YEARS. The man can FLAT OUT REBOUND. So do u just move Kirilenko to the 4 and leave Millsap on the bench when your team would be weaker at the 2 and 3 without Kirilenko playing those 2 positions?

AND NO, why would Utah move Kirilenko up to the 4 since they have a GLUT of 4's and 5's?

Didn't you guys watch the draft and saw who Utah was drafting?

boy would that be a trade for charlotte. we can all dream cant we? and in reality its not complete nonsense, because boozer has sold out teams before, one that included LEBRON JAMES for god sakes so he would most certainly leave d williams and company, so if the numbers are close........

but how about something like this:

-okafor is on the fence about staying here
-boozer is gonna want big money from some market be it utah or charlotte
-brown has been dissing morrison in papers 3 months before we even get to traing camp

sign and trade PF okafor, and ship him along with SG morrison and C hollins to utah

bobcats get PF boozer, C koufas, and SG brewer
*kosta koufas could be solid bench center and ronnie brewer averaged 12 points from the bench for the jazz so he is a capabale bench scorer
emeka okafor would be great in the utah system, is a year younger then boozer, has comparable defensive skills, and would be made a better offensive player with williams as his point. his scoring is a downgrade for utah, but the points are made up for with the addition of morrison. he would take the place of an aging matt harpring or an upgrade to bench scorer kyle korver.

boozer coming here for a year is the same as okafor signing a qualifing offer and becoming a UFA. in a trial basis i would much rather have boozer for a year then okafor. best case he is convinced to stay and the overpayment we are about to give to okafor would then be given to boozer next summer. back up the van and dump way too much money at him not okafor, because he's gonna get it somewhere.

charlotte has felton, richardson, wallace, boozer, and mohammad as it starting five.

utah has williams, morrison, kirelinko, okafor and okur as its starting five.

Hey ick,

Weren't you wrong about alot of Bobcats tuff in the past? Some big stuff like the Jason Richardson trade and MJ buying part of the team?
It wouldn't suprise if you were wrong about this too.

I read everything you said "Guru" and I understood everything you said. That doesn't mean that I have to agree with what you said.

If you put Korver in your starting 5 you have an instant liablility. Not just defensively, he doesn't really have any skills on offense either. He's not a passer, not a ball handler, doesn't create his own shot. He's just a spot up jump shooter.

How can you say that Kirilenko hasn't been asked to play D? You're crazy. I have read and understood exactly what you've said. I agree that Kirilenko would probably have a bigger role on another team but that doesn't mean that the Jazz get by with Korver as their small forward. They drop 10 wins easy if they let that happen.

Posted by: Jared | Jul 11, 2008 5:07:46 PM

These scenerios might make sense for the Bobcats and other teams:

1) Chicago Bulls - Wallace, Felton, Morrison and Dudly for Hinirich, sign and trades of Luol Deng and Ben Gordon. Maybe Nocioni in a swap with either Deng or Gordon.

2) Okafor and Dudley to Cleveland for Anderson Varejao (Sign & Trade), Draft Picks, and Zydrunas Ilgauskas.

3) OKC's Robert Swift and Chris Wilcox for Okafor

4) Miami's Dequean Cook and Udonis Haslem for Okafor.

5) Atlanta's Josh Childress and Josh Smith for Okafor and Wallace or Morrison.
