Observations from Las Vegas

Stray thoughts as the Bobcats deal with summer league and free-agency:

*     You’re probably as surprised as I am that Emeka Okafor turned down that $12 million-plus-per-year offer last summer. The way I hear it, Okafor was so close to accepting it he indicated to at least one teammate he would, just before the deadline for an extension. I hear the Bobcats and Okafor’s representatives have had some discussions since free-agency started, but no heavy negotiations. When you’re a restricted free agent, coming to an agreement often is a deliberate process.

*     The Bobcats don’t have to sign first-round picks D.J. Augustin and Alexis Ajinca before they start playing summer-league games Saturday in Las Vegas, but they’d like that behind them. The team will take more of a wait-and-see approach to second-round pick Kyle Weaver. They’ll likely evaluate his play in Las Vegas before finalizing a deal. Weaver’s versatility and defense should give him a decent shot at making the team.

*    The Bobcats made it official that Larry Brown hired his brother, Herb, as an assistant coach. Reminds me of the nepotism fuss a few years back concerning Bernie Bickerstaff hiring son John-Blair. As it played out, J.B. Bickerstaff was the best assistant on that staff because he outworked just about everyone else in the organization. He was determined to prove he earned his paycheck, and now he’s with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

What's the observation Rick? Is Sean working out with the team? How does Raymond look in practice? Has he improved on his jumper? How does DJ and Ajinca look? How is LB doing with the team? This article has nothing to do with you being Las Vegas. Are you really in Vegas? Is something coming in a few days? The title has nothing to do with the information you provided.

Posted by: BobcatsFan | Jul 7, 2008 4:14:47 PM

Nice post...I thought we would actually find something out about the team...guess I was stupid to assume that!

Posted by: Bobcat Terry | Jul 7, 2008 5:22:37 PM

Since they don't start practicing until tomorrow (after originally planning to start yesterday), it's pretty hard to observe the team at this point.
There will be plenty on the team in the coming 8-10 days.

Posted by: Mike Persinger | Jul 7, 2008 5:29:40 PM

That is true that the league hasn't started, however, he still shouldn't have chose the title "Observation from Las Vegas."

Posted by: Yeah? | Jul 7, 2008 5:51:33 PM

You guys would have read it no matter what the title was. I would have at least. I just like talking ball.

Posted by: Jared | Jul 7, 2008 6:08:22 PM

How the hell can you screw up signing first-rounders? The league dictates the terms of the contract.

Posted by: Michael Procton | Jul 7, 2008 6:25:30 PM

The blog did not say the Bobcats screwed up signing the first rounders. We are not the only team that hasn't signed their first rounders yet. I'm sure Augustin will be signed soon. They probably have to handle Ajinca's buyout before they can sign him so it's nothing to worry about.

Posted by: DS | Jul 7, 2008 8:28:43 PM

Beasley looked pretty good in his first game tonight. I know we didn't really have much that Miami wanted but it sure would have been nice to somehow move up and see him in a Bobcats jersey. I wonder if Miami plays Marion at the 3 or if they will try and trade him and his expiring contract?

Posted by: Mason | Jul 7, 2008 10:31:46 PM

Bonnell people rag on you a lot but man you deserve it this time. As others have said what the hell are the observations from Vegas? Those were 3 worthless "tidbits" you gave us.....man that sucked.

Posted by: WTF Bonnell? | Jul 7, 2008 11:02:25 PM

I read this daily and never comment, but I'm really tired of you guys ragging on Bonnell. Seriously, you should be glad you're getting observations in the middle of summer from summer league games. Who cares if the title is misleading, like someone else said you're going to read it anyways, so who cares, like you could do a better job.

Posted by: Matt | Jul 7, 2008 11:36:36 PM

I had to look like hell for this, needless to say I didn't get it from Bonnell.

I wrote the headline, not Rick, so if it's the headline you take issue with rag me. In fact, Rick doesn't write any of the headlines (although sometimes he makes suggestions), the copy editors and editors do. Rick is in Las Vegas, there is opinion in the blog, so technically they are observations from Las Vegas. Of course, if your only intention is to anonymously rip an Observer writer, you don't care about that. Truth: We're spending a lot of money for summer league in Las Vegas, and not more than a couple of these guys (other than the regulars who are playing) will be Bobcats.

On charlotte.com today at http://www.charlotte.com/bobcats/

* A story on Adam Morrison, who will work out with the team in Las Vegas but not play in the games as he recovers from his serious knee injury. A tidbit: To escape the monotony of nine hours a day in a machine that moved his knee constantly to break up scar tissue, he tried to do it while he slept.

* A comment on each player on the roster.

* A look at the Bobcats' key issues to be resolved this summer.

There will be significant coverage for the next 8-10 days, and you won't get it anywhere but here.

Bustacat,

The roster info was posted on the bobcats homepage yesterday. I found it quite easily.

Also I read from a Cleveland News source that the Cavs are interested in trading for Felton. I can't imagine the Bobs getting better from a trade like that but I was wondering what other people thought. Anyone like the idea of trading Felton to Cleveland? Who would you want back?

Posted by: Jared | Jul 8, 2008 8:00:50 AM

Raymond Felton does not need to be traded. He is a good combo gaurd who is very capable of developing into a true point guard. I am sure Larry Brown will get Raymond to maximize his untapped potential.

I don't think Weaver is going to make the team. I know the team likes his defensive prowess, but I could see an unsigned free agent taking Weaver's roster spot.

You're the man Mike! Way to stand up for Rick since everyone bashes him too.

I'm excited that we've invited an interesting group of rooks and journeymen to Vegas, but where is Jason Richards of Davidson? Does anyone know why we didn't invite the NCAA regular season assist leader, Bob Cousy award finalist, and local fan favorite to camp? Was the plane ticket too expensive? Hotel room a bit more than Johnson could stomach? Did Jordan think he was the fat friend from Seinfeld? Ridiculous.

How many NCAA superlative players will we continue to pass on this off-season. If we would've drafted Chris Douglas-Roberts in the 2nd round, Bonnell's headline could've read, "Cats Nab Two 1st Team All-American's in Strong Draft" instead of the headline that more appropriately explained our choices, "Pourquoi?"

Does anyone know if Jason Richards was invited to anyone's summer league team?

Posted by: The Doctor | Jul 8, 2008 11:42:45 AM

The Summer League roster really shows how much stock Brown puts in the Pre-Draft Camps in Portsmouth and Orlando. Most of these guys (Hunter, Hines, Wallace, Visser) have performed really well there in the last year or two.

Posted by: Michael Procton | Jul 8, 2008 11:43:41 AM

As for Felton to the Cavs, they don't really have the pieces to make it worth our while. Joe Smith might fit as a tough-minded low post player with a decent midrange game, and Damon Jones could come over and provide a good veteran bench option at PG who could show Augustin a thing or two about running the show at this level. Finally, Daniel Gibson, while he's an unsigned RFA looks good for a young player and is actually IMPROVING, unlike our young PG. Regardless, though, the salaries don't really match up for anything to go down between the Bobbies and the LeBrons.

Posted by: Michael Procton | Jul 8, 2008 11:47:38 AM

To the "The Doctor"- Too bad Richards was already signed w/ Miami. Maybe Bob needs to take all his money, and buy a new rule that says you can take other teams players! Get a life, idiot.

Jason Richards signed with the Heat's summer league team.

On another note, please don't post with another poster's name. I don't want to make a habit of banning people, but that's something that'll get you booted. quickly. So will profanity. Thanks.

Posted by: Mike Persinger | Jul 8, 2008 1:08:43 PM

Bobcat Matt,

If you read my post again, you will find I WAS asking who he signed with (Thanks for the information), and questioning why the Bobcats didn't make a play to sign him ourselves. I was using the phrase 'invite to summer league' to imply 'sign to summer league'. Of course I realize assembling a summer league squad isn't as simple as mailing out invitations like a elementary school birthday party. All unsigned rookie free agents are up for grabs to any team after the draft, I am just wondering why we didn't grab him.

Perhaps you, sir, should get a life. A life less marked by discourteousness and vitriol and more peaceful and fulfilled.

Mr. Persinger, you will find that unfortunately at lot of these blogs end up having harsh comments on Bonnell and racists remarks about the Bobcats. It is quite annoying for those of us that just want to talk basketball.

I've criticized Bonnell too, but only for things that I truely felt were warranted, such as a reporting or spelling error.

Anyways, if you could get the trash posters off of this blog, that would be great!

whoooo baby, things be heatin' on this ole blog show today. This here's Sean's momma back from a run of afflictions that done brought me to my knees. Lot of wheezin' and hackin and all that nasty flem thing. But Lordy, ain't been too sick to know what been happin lately. But first I wanna clear up a rumor bout my baby. On one of them other blogs they be sayin' my baby he up to 550 lbs and be goin on that there Jerry Springer Show. Well let me set y'all straight. My baby been towin' the line on his weight and he be hittin' the gym like ole Sambo Vincent told him he need to do. In fact, he and and ole Sambo they bein all friendly and all these days. Guess'n when a man dont have no job making a friend here and ther about the best you can do. Anyway, my baby aint doin no Jerry Springer and he at 'bout 278 not 550 . Damn, 550, that be gettin' up there close to that ole boy out there in Phoenix Charlie Barkley. My baby ever get that big I swear I put him down and send him to the promised land myself, just like they do with one of them lame horses that try for the Triple Clown and all. Thats what I say. I swear.

Now how bout that ole white man Mister Brown. Dont he just doin it all! Hirin' his 71 year ole grandaddy, makin him a coach and callin him his brother. Lordy, I seen more sense comin' from the lips of that crazy Minister friend of President Obama. This must be another one of them "diversity" hires that ole man Mister Johnson been showin us down there at the arena. Lordy what a team we puttin together. The old, the tired and the hungry...and dont any you hoodlums say nothin about my baby's eatin habits neither.

Now what about them draft picks? We pick us up another foreigner and and some baby faced boy from down there in St Augustine somewhere. Where we find these boys? Both them boys together with there winter coats on dont weigh in at a good big man to help ole Oakey out. What we thinkin bout out there? And I dont wanna here no more on this 'never can have enough of them point gaurds" thing. WE need a boy in the middle that make my baby look like he been singled out by the Red Cross in Rhuwanda for special help on his nutrition. I swear ole Mister Michael he gottin come down off that penthouse and start makin like he gotta earn a livin from this job. Not like he at the tables in Las Vegas yellin " Lets try it again!".

Startin to feel a little peeked now but I cant leave without sayin somethin to that there Mister Pursewinger the Observer bossman of ole Bonewell. I like your boy Rick. But I gotta tell ya, you write like yo momma shook some red pepper on yo tongue. Gotta work on that temper young man. Tellin everybody how you write that headline and all. That aint nothin to be proud of now. These here hoodlums just thought you had some fresh news. Thats all. Instead you get all cute and fancy like you workin for the Washington Post. Tell the truth. Thats what I say. Why not just have called it "Notes from the Road". Instead it sound like you about to tell us of the Second Coming and all. Lordy, you younger generation need to clean yo selfs up

Till later and hopes yo momma be in good health. So call her and tell her you love her. Make her day for sure!

Portraying Sean May's mother as a "Mammy" archetype is nothing short of racism.

Also, you're attempt at writing in dialect was quite poor. I suggest reading the works of P.L. Dunbar and Zora Neal Hurston before you try that again.

Here's some history on "mammy"

http://www.ferris.edu/jimcrow/mammies/

maybe enlightenment will help keep posts like that off this board.

Mr. Persinger,
As a person who uses profanity from time to time but is glad to stop now that I know its not welcome on this blog, I would hope that you ban users who present other types of offensive material as well and not just those who curse.

Posted by: Jared | Jul 8, 2008 8:09:04 PM

with the sixers clearing space for a run at brand, just have to wonder aloud, where are the bobcats. if this guy is available for "below" max why are we not stepping up and signing up okafor and sending him out west for brand? s scoring power forward with defensive ability is like keeping okafor and adding what he cant do(play anybody out 10-15 feet, score more then 13-15 points). where are any moves worth anything by the front office. articles and updates about may not being ready until preseason and morrison not yet ready are not drumming up hope for the season.

Posted by: brendan | Jul 8, 2008 8:56:12 PM

mohammad and okafor up front wont get better with a new coach/new playbook. unless they plan on keeping okafor at 5 and adding another scoring, outside defending 4, then we are in for more of the same. thats why we ship our most valuable chip for the best offer, and brand sounds pretty good.

Posted by: brendan | Jul 8, 2008 9:01:16 PM

Jared is an oversensitive baby. People like he are the ones keeping "racism" alive.

Hey brendan...maybe it's because there's no way they'd take Brand for Okafor straight up. Further, taking on Brand would NOT be like keeping Okafor. Brand is average at best on defense. Further, Okafor is a 16+ PPG scorer RIGHT NOW with decent point guard play. Oh, and finally, if you're waiting on a good move from the front office, you might want to take a number or a nap.

Posted by: Michael Procton | Jul 8, 2008 9:13:34 PM

Okafor is a 13.8 ppg scorer. That's significantly lower than 16+. PPG is one stat that's easy to interpret and hard to get wrong.

Ignorance and fear is what keeps racism(which does really exist so I don't know why quotation marks are needed) alive. If you bothered to read the link I posted you might learn something about what the "Mammy" character actually portrays. It is a racial stereotype that dehumanizes black women. Also, Sambo is widely seen as a term that is just a racist and degrading as the N-word.

You might want to correct your grammar as well. it should read "people like him are the ones..." That's something you should have learned in grade school. But I guess if you're stupid enough to perpetuate one of the most callous racial stereotypes in our country's history then you shouldn't be expected to be fully literate.

Racism is alive and well in this country and you sir are living proof.

Posted by: Jared | Jul 8, 2008 10:33:38 PM

"...with decent point guard play."
He's never had that with Felton at the helm.

Here's a question...could it just be that the guy's name is Sam? And your attack on my "literacy" is amusing as hell. I guarantee I'm better-read and more intelligent than you, sir (there's a set of COMMAS in a phrase like this, if we're keeping track of folks' grammar,) are. Racism is "alive" because hypersensitive people like you feel a need to pick apart every statement anybody's ever made.

Posted by: Michael Procton | Jul 8, 2008 10:55:15 PM

Oh...and this would never get accepted, but I'm talking with a Knicks fan, and we say the Bobbies should trade Felton and May for Jared Jeffries and David Lee, both of whom are healthy and fit our needs as active 4s who have decent midrange games.

Posted by: Michael Procton | Jul 8, 2008 11:22:53 PM

Procton,

I'm happy to see you so self-confident, you're usually so humble ("I guarantee I'm better-read and more intelligent than you sir"... are you kidding with this stuff?) Jared is absolutely right with his assessment of the "mammy" stereotype on the previous, laughably-ignorant-if-it-weren't-so-racist post.

Jared, check out the book called "Welcome to the Terrordome: The Pain, Politics, and Promise of Sports" by Dave Zirin. It's illuminating on the issues of race, money, power, and sports- and funny as hell. Procton you might want to read it as well, if you can squeeze it in your reading list.

And if you want some ANTI-RACIST sports coverage check out Zirin's www.EdgeOfSports.com

p.s. Jessie Helms, Gone But Not Forgiven

Posted by: BustaCat | Jul 9, 2008 12:13:23 AM

You're right, I did misread your statement about Okafor. You're point is making a huge assumption however. You could just as easily say that Felton would average 10+ assist if he had a decent big to pass to.

Do you know where the term Sambo comes from and what it means? It's a racial slur. It's not less of a racial slur just because it sounds like a person's first name.

Are you really so oblivious that you believe that racism can only exist in people's false perceptions? You really don't think that racism is alive in today's society? It's different than in past generations but that doesn't mean it's gone away. Look past the surface Procton. Saying things like "I hate black people" isn't the only way to be racist. Racial stereotypes, while presented with a smile on the outside can also dehumanize the person you're portraying. This is done so you can smile at a person while never acknowledging their equal right to exist as an American citizen. You are a racist.

Missing commas is one thing, but you got the pronoun wrong in a very simple sentence. That's something you expect from people who haven't been speaking English for very long.

I have a B.A. in English. I also have a B.A. in Psychology. I also graduated summa cum laude. That means I had a 4.0 gpa. I'm also in Grad school right now. Do you really think you're more well-read than a person like me? You think you're getting the same education at your little community college? Community college is good for people, don't get me wrong, but don't get ahead of yourself.

Procton from our few conversations I've been able to conclude three things about you. 1) you're pretentious 2) you're obnoxious 3) you're a racist.

I can deal with the first two, but racism is intolerable. You're posts aren't worth reading. You're only worth ignoring. The problem is that most people ignore you and that is what really keeps racism alive. Ignoring ignorant buffoons like you is what allows racism to thrive today.

Thanks for the recommendation Bustacat. I'll be sure to look it up.

Posted by: Jared | Jul 9, 2008 8:45:56 AM

Fellas, been reading this blog for about a year now and thoroughly enjoying the likes of procton and momma. While a bit off the wall at times, both bloggers bring alot of character and insight to our look at the B'cats. But to Jared and Busta I'd like to direct my comments:
1. I find nothing racisit at all in the momma blogs. In fact, if you have read her comments over the past year or so, she portrays a woman who is devout in her faith, committed to her son and simply loves the B'cats. In fact, she has jumped all over this blog in the past for the excessive foul language written here, the gay bashing, the excessive anger and the sexual inuendo. And oddly, for weeks after, the language and focius on good sports exchange has improved.
2. Your "mammy" reference is insulting and frankly il-referenced. The antibellum Mammy was a strong and indispensible corner stone in southern culture facing poverty and despair while running a household and raising both black and white children. She was revered by both her employers as well as her peers. Its inappropriate to defile such a regarded matriarch using socio-political writings with hatred as an agenda.
3. mommas writings always highlight in tongue and cheek things that are just frankly outlandish in the B'cats organization. This blog highlights Seans continued doubtfulness of his athleticism to sustain a full NBA season. Her joke on Browns bother is hilarious but brings to light another rround of cronieism in the B'cats org. And finally, I dont think I'm the only blogger who felt we needed a big center more than we needed another point gaurd.
4. And finally, I have never read any of her blogs that dont end with a message to show how much you should appreciate your mother. Perhaps out of place for a sports blog? Maybe, but sure doesnt show any signs of hatred or bias in my mind.

If your comments supress bloggers like procton, momma and a few others that add a sense of character to Bonnel's notes, then it will be a loss to the blog and leave us with nothing more than a forum for the expression of anger for every action he observes in his coverage of the B'cats.

Posted by: mike | Jul 9, 2008 9:00:27 AM

Damn..you graduated with a 4.0 and you don't know the difference between a contraction and a possessive pronoun. I guess I am getting a better education than you.

Posted by: Michael Procton | Jul 9, 2008 9:24:36 AM

Mike,

I suspect you're a poorly veiled Procton, or friend of Procton. Let's look at some of what you got wrong. "Antebellum" is the period of our nations history leading up to the Civil War. "Antibellum" is a modern slang term that means you're against war. If you google "antibellum" google will think you've misspelled the word.

"Mammy" was not a cornerstone of southern culture. There is really no historical evidence that the "Mammy" figure was all that common at any point in the south. She was mostly a myth propagated by whites who wanted to strip black women of any sexuality and portray them as nonthreatening servants to whites.

"Mammy" always said nice things and upheld morality, so you can't claim that your "Mammy" characiture is justified for that reason alone. You're just following the stereotype used to dehumanize other people. Are you really comfortable with yourself in doing so?

"Mammy" was a characiture that whites were more friendly towards because she far less threatening. That doesn't make here revered. She was created so whites could maintain their racist practices while not feeling bad about themselves.

If you want to make all those points about the Bobcats you can do so without being ignorant and racist. Accusing me of having an agenda of hatred is laughable. That's completely out of left field and deserves no response.

Posted by: Jared | Jul 9, 2008 9:29:26 AM

Procton, why don't you consider the marines. You can get a good education, and they might even make a man out of you.

Posted by: Ht | Jul 9, 2008 9:54:09 AM

Thanks for ignoring the real issue(you're racism) to make some makes some cryptic attack on my grammar. You're a real man Procton.

Posted by: Jared | Jul 9, 2008 10:28:46 AM

"your" not "you're"

Yes we all make typos from time to time.

Posted by: Jared | Jul 9, 2008 10:30:50 AM

YOUR unsubstantiated claims about my so-called racism are irrelevant to me. In fact, I might just say YOU'RE barking up the wrong tree. YOU'RE the one who was bragging about YOUR stellar education.

Posted by: Michael Procton | Jul 9, 2008 10:41:24 AM

All this talk makes me want some pancakes. What type of syrup do you guys recommend?

Posted by: LeeL | Jul 9, 2008 10:41:54 AM

Leel, one of my favorite established brands of syrup is Aunt Jemima. I LOVE their spokeswoman. Some people might say it's a racist portrayal, but don't you think it would be off the market if that were true? But you know what really gets my goat? Those Mrs. Butterworth's bottles. It's like they're using the "mommy" stereotype to say that all elderly white women are fat. Gets my blood a boilin', and no, it's not the heated seats.

Posted by: Michael Procton | Jul 9, 2008 11:14:12 AM

Procton, let's be realistic. If you didn't care that I was making you face your own racism you wouldn't be responding to me. I'm not saying that you think you hate black. I'm saying that portrayals like "Mammy" are pandering and degrading. It is racism. You can't just put a polite spin on it a laugh it off. Well you can, but that would make you a racist.

Yes I do misspell words sometimes. You however, were the one who guaranteed me that you were more well-read that I am. I wasn't bragging about my education. I was simply explaining to you why you'll probably never be as well-read as I am. You didn't just misspell a word, you got conversational grammar wrong.

Is your greatest criticism of me that I don't like racism and that I misspell words on this blog occasionally? Is that really all you can say about me? If that's the case, then I feel pretty good about myself. Also, I feel pretty sorry for you.

Posted by: Jared | Jul 9, 2008 12:12:51 PM

The difference between you're and your is not misspelling a word, chief. It's an, umm, error in conversational grammar. And I really don't care how you feel about me. I don't give a damn. If you want to keep playing the race card your whole life, you'll just keep feeding the fire.

Posted by: Michael Procton | Jul 9, 2008 12:43:01 PM

Your and You're sound exactly the same. It is IMPOSSIBLE to make a conversational error when the two words sound exactly the same. I'm not saying "you're wrong" but thinking "your wrong" as if you possess the wrong. There's no grammatical confusion there. It's simply a spelling error. You couldn't look like more of an idiot right now.

Race card? O.J. Simpson played the race card when he wanted to not be convicted for murder. I'm saying that racist stereotypes that aren't even funny have no place on blog about sports. I have no greater agenda than that. How am I playing the race card?

How do you come up with this stuff? You just can't be wrong about anything can you? You're such a baby I don't know why I even respond.
