Brown's candor on display at media day
There was no lack of candor when new Bobcats coach Larry Brown spoke with media Monday, on the eve of training camp. A quick smattering of Brown’s comments:
- He said he asked the front office for three things when he took the job – three point guards who could dribble through the press, two small forwards who could defend and five athletic big guys. Brown said he isn’t sure he has a third point guard in the group headed to UNC Wilmington or a small forward who can defend as he wants. He seemed disappointed they failed to add another big man and indicated – as he has previously – that Sean May will get the first shot at starting at power forward.
- He said he expects to play Raymond Felton and rookie D.J. Augustin together some in the backcourt, so like his predecessors, Brown sees Felton as a combo guard, although Brown said the ballhandling in that backcourt would be interchangeable.
- Ideally, he’d like the third point guard to be a bigger player, similar to how he used Aaron McKie and Eric Snow while coaching the Philadelphia 76ers.
- He hopes to play Emeka Okafor exclusively at center and Gerald Wallace exclusively at small forward.
- He said, based on pickup games the past month, he wouldn’t be reluctant to use rookie center Alexis Ajinca in regular-season games.
- He said Adam Morrison started out the summer in poor condition, but has improved that dramatically over the past month. “Much, MUCH better shape,’’ Brown said of Morrison. “He couldn’t do three things without going to the waste-paper basket (apparently to vomit). Now he’s as ready as anybody.’’

I think Ray needs a shot at PG exclusively. Everyone wants him to play with another PG...Oh well, I think we have a solid roster. We'll see what the old man can do with them.

What does this comment say about
Gerald Wallace?
"a small forward who can defend as he wants"

BM, Brown is just acknowledging what everybody else not wearing Tar Baby blue glasses already KNOWS. Felton's got PG skills, but an SG mindset. All the ballhandling and passing ability in the world doesn't do you a bit of good if all you want to do is jack up threes you can't hit.

Micheal Procton do you believe the bullshit that comes out of your mouth? "SG mindset" are you blind or did you not watch him at UNC? the coaches WANT him to be shooting guard so he shoots. Being explosive doesn't make you a combo guard. Especially when your 6"0 and don't have a stroke. We're not making the playoffs with Augustine and Raymond playing together. Also he sounds like he doesn't have what he needs which IMO is front office and coaching problems they fumbled one on draft night they had guys on the board who could have fixed our front court issues and another guy we passed on who could have gave us a LEGIT COMBO GUARD but they didn't do it as all ways.
Once again we have a Bobcats head coach that does one thing and says another. All we heard during the first week of Browns hire was how Felton was a true point guard now he's a 2. Don't be surprised if Gerald Wallace is playing the 4 sometimes. Nazr is playing the 5 and Okafor the 4. Horribly ran team and it will be Pistons, Philly and New York Knicks all over again he wont be here that long mark the words.
We need 5 big man who are ready to play but we pass on Brook Lopez, Darrell Aurthor and Anthony Randolph. We need a defensive minded SF has the old man watched Jared Dudley? We need at least 1 bigger PG that can shift between the 1 and 2 but we pass on Bayless for DJ Augustin who I like but wasn't needed with our first pick. Saying one thing and doing another our motto...

So GW can't defend? How does he want a SF to defend? He certainly couldn't ask for a better help defender, does he have critiques of Wallace's abilities in a one on one situation? We shouldn't sleep on Andre Brown as a potential 15th roster member and contributor off the bench at the 4 either (I would gander that he is much more prepared for NBA minutes than Ajinca).
I think there will be a pretty big difference between the 1-2 combo of an Augustin and Felton than the 1-2 combo of Felton and Knight because of Felton AND Augustin's combo abilities (Knight had NO 2-guard abilities). It certainly would give us an edge, quickness wise over most backcourts in the league. That being said, it's only in an obvious matchup situation that it should be utilized, otherwise J-Rich needs to be in there at the two with one of the pgs on the floor.

We Sooo are in trouble.
1) Stay Puff at the 4:
2) 2 guards under 6-1 on the court at the same time?!?!
3) Add in an out of shape diabetic; and
4) no bench!
YIKES!

Brown's not saying he is going to play Ray and DJ 30 minutes a game together. Rather, at some point in a game you might see the two in the lineup together. I think Ray will get a legit shot at running the point and if he plays well will keep it all year long. If he doesn't play all that well at PG, you might see more of the two playing together.

We have several big men, beyond Emeka and Nazr, who are athletic and have lots of potential. LB seems to think highly of Ajinca and he is athletic. I suspect that someone from the quartet of Davidson, Hollins, Brown and Ajinca will emerge. Maybe this is not the five that LB wanted; but, there is a lot of potential there. We should be fine if May can stay healthy; however, the jury is still out on that possibility and the only approach to take is wait and see.

Neither Emeka nor Nazr are above-average athletes for their size in the NBA. Davidson, Hollins, and Ajinca all suck. If we get 25 MPG from them combined, it'll be a good return for their abilities.
