Bobcats best shooters Brown has coached?

Larry Brown says the Charlotte Bobcats might be the best jump-shooting team he’s coached.

Whoa! Didn’t see that one coming.

What Brown said makes a lot more sense when placed in context. He’s not saying any individual shooter on this team is as good as, say, former Indiana Pacer Reggie Miller. Right or wrong, he’s saying there’s a wealth of jump-shooters on this team who you can trust to hit a basket.

He ticked off Jason Richardson, Matt Carroll, Adam Morrison and D.J. Augustin as those guys, then added Raymond Felton and Sean May as improved shooters.

Of the eight other NBA franchises on Brown’s resume, he said only the Detroit Pistons had similar depth as far as guys who could drain a J.

Again, back to the context: Brown always prefers to coach a team that thinks drive and post-up first. The advantages of attacking the rim – increased field-goal percentage, increased trips to the foul line – are always in the back of his mind.

But he said Friday a coach sometimes must adapt to what his team does best. So while he’ll encourage Richardson, Carroll and Augustin to drive, he won’t inhibit their ability to make 3-pointers.

Still, I’ll be curious whether Brown still holds this opinion at mid-season. It’s a lot easier to make a jump shot in an empty gym, guarded by your teammates, than it is in San Antonio with Bruce Bowen draped all over you.

Is he sure he doesn't want to sign Jeff McInnis back because of some "improved shooting?" Hah.

Why are you questioning a HOF coach comments about his team jump shooting? You don't think Larry has been around long enough to know if his team practice habits will show up in real games. If you don't make them in practice, then you won't make them in a real game. Plus the Bowen comment is stupid b/c we only play the Spurs twice a year!

Get a new Job! I wish the Bobcats could lay you off!.

That proctolysis little guy is just a frustrated non-jock who can't play so he's just an invisible critic who sleeps with a stst book and dreams of making that big shot while listening to "I believe I can fly" tune. Sleep tight li'l guy, Christmas is just around the corner, maybe you'll get a new football or some more stat links for your computer.

This DanCat little guy, however, is a frustrated non-ANYTHING who anonymously criticizes people on a blog. Talk about sad.

Is he sure he doesnt want to call Alaska for Trajan Langdon for improved shooting? Hah. While your at it, get Laettner on the phone so he can teach Morrison some great defense.

Maybe they can shoot, but who's going to rebound the misses?

I think I'd pick the 95-96 Pacers as Brown's best jump shooting team ... Reggie Miller, Ricky Pierce, Byron Scott, Eddie Johnson, Fred Hoiberg. The big fella Smits was a good shooter too. Mark Jackson was only a decent perimeter shooter but in 95-96 he was dropping 43% of his three pointers.

I think I'd pick that team as the best shooting team he's coached. Still it says a lot about how much quality this Bobcats team has in the shooting department that they're right there in the running and have a credible case as the best shooting squad Brown has coached over his lengthily career.

Exciting season ahead

I thought the NBA left Charlotte.

dave,
bryon scott wasn't on that pacers team.

and pricton michael or whatever your name is. before you go bashing trajon langdon, read his wikipedia...he's great overseas and said he would never play in the nba again. he's won titles and mvps over there. he would probably be pretty decent off our bench.

get some knowledge before you start yapping

Yes, Larry Brown loves 6'2 slow, un-athletic jump shooters with terrible ball handling skills. Trajon would be the prototypical bench reserve in a LB system. I am surprised we have not attempted to sign him yet.

I'm realistic enough not to expect playoffs, but it will be great seeing our talent finally start to develop in a system. Too bad our schedule will once again work against us, but maybe by springtime LB will have the roster he wants. Can't wait for the season to start!

Apauldds, every team plays 82 regular season games. The things that will work against you are:

Racist and Ignorant Owner

MJ who wants to be paid to show up and s**t in the bathroom.

No marketing staff.

Season ticket holders (the few there are) bailing as quick as possible.

Coach who can't get along with any team or owners he has ever worked for.

The list will continue as the season begins.

No Playoffs again...

At least we can show up when the Hornets come to town and trounce the BobJohnsonCats.

How much longer do we have to have this team in Charlotte.

There will be a parade when they announce they are leaving.

I wonder who David Stern will pick to be the champion this year?

Peace

Wow Jay, I guess it's safe to say you're not a glass half full type guy.

Posted by: apauldds | Oct 7, 2008 1:45:21 PM

Wow Jay...I guess thats how you spell ignorant and stupid

If we get a tough schedule, its because we're playing notorious tough teams like the Lakers, Hornets, Celtics etc, and we play them on the road. We play them in the 2nd half of the season, when wins count the most and your chemistry needs to be at its highest. "Racist" owners and MJ have nothing to do with that. "No marketing staff"...its tough times and apparently the marketing staff wasnt working, because people like you do not show up to games.."A coach who cant get along with any players or coaches"....hmm, yes, he has had disputes with players and management, but not before winning an NCAA championship, an NBA championship, not before developing teams to there full potential, making several trips to the playoffs, and overall leaving 7 out of 8 professional teams better off than when he found them. Get over your fetish over the hornets just because there a winning team now, they chose to leave charlotte, they were not taken from you. They are not your home team. The arena is not paid for out of your pocket...its out of the pockets of tourist who rent cars. Get over yourself. Go live in New Orleans amongst the devistation if you think the hornets are your saving grace. This is about the Cats and their supporters. I live in SF and I LOVE the cats. The playoffs are going to be tough, but a big X factor is going to be May's health. Thats been the talk the last 2 years, but theres a sense of possibility and realism about it this year. Having a post up, mid range, bang down low PF can make HUGE contributions. It sucks Felton didnt get his extension, but he needs to prove he deserves it, and now that Knight and McInnis and Vincent are gone, we'll see how he does. Im crossing my fingers over Morrison...enough said. Support these guys, Charlotte, dont be an iggnorant stereotypial southerner like Jay...times are tough but treat your kids, go out with buddies, enjoy a good time downtown in uptown, these guys play hard and work hard for you, let them know you appreciate it, despite the arena, despite the tough times, and despite iggnorance from people like Jay

Larry Brown says the Charlotte Bobcats might be the best jump-shooting team he’s coached.

Whoa! Didn’t see that one coming.

Me neither...lol!

Posted by: superlucchic | Oct 8, 2008 1:47:56 PM

Right now, near the end of this season's first preseason game they are shooting 28% to the Magic's 56%. Half. Half. I am a season ticket holder and a big fan, but to read this while consequently watching that...there's some deep irony.

Posted by: Shawn | Oct 8, 2008 9:29:47 PM

Felton, Augustin and Carrol, 0-13 fg. Ajinca, 1-8 (not gonna get over that waste of a pick for a while). I don't want to be a downer or anything, but the 'Cats got off to a pretty inconspicuous, to put it nicely, start tonight. Well, they may have shot like blind men but the defense, oh... wait... yeah... pretty bad beginning to the Larry Brown era.
