Davidson waived; roster at 14
The Bobcats waived forward Jermareo Davidson Monday, reducing the roster to 14 players.
Davidson was originally drafted by Golden State in 2007 and traded to the Bobcats along with Jason Richardson in the draft-night deal for Brandan Wright. He averaged 2.0 points, 0.7 rebounds and 1.0 blocked shots in three exhibitions, playing an average of 8.8 minutes.

In case you didn't see my post:
Mr. Bonnell, I honestly do care about the jerseys.
I am also pretty positive that blue was supposed to be the road uni for THIS season. I guess things got pushed back though - maybe your sources could elaborate.
Second, are you surprised about the move and does this mean someone else will be signed soon? I kind of expected Hollins to be the one to go.... I guess he offers more on defense and athletic potential.

I wish Jermareo well. He seemed like a gentlemanly, mellow guy in interviews. And he has experienced some difficult tragedies in the past.

I am glad the Bobcats got rid of a guaranteed contract. I thought Davidson would develop well if given a chance and I was wrong. This is definitely a move in the right direction.
God willing, the Bobcats will fill the remaining roster stops wisely.

I'll have something for you tonight, regarding what they plan to do with the roster spot. Regarding Jermareo: A nice kid and a good athlete for his size, who just wasn't learning quite fast enough. There's no real difference between him and Ryan Hollins' situation. An educated guess: They kept Ryan because he's taller, so hypothetically he can play both center and power forward. Or maybe Hollins is on the way out the door, too.

Here's to the Bobcats cutting a player in a position of absolute weakness to sign a 3rd string PG or something ridiculously lame like that.

Interestingly, Davidson was actually due more money (though only by about $25K), so we can know this is at least ONE move that wasn't just about the money.
Back to bad decisions...from the Memphis paper:
Grizzlies coach Marc Iavaroni isn't set on starting Marc Gasol and Darko Milicic in the frontcourt, and might eventually start rookie Darrell Arthur at power forward.
"Frankly, looking at the way Darrell Arthur has been playing...I think he should definitely be in the rotation," Iavaroni said. "If we don’t start him, he could get lost in the rotation." Wow. Things suddenly aren't looking so hot for Hakim Warrick, while owners should keep a close watch on Arthur's production -- if he breaks into the starting five, go ahead and pick him up. Yes, Daniel. Keeping Davidson and his 3-2 average would CERTAINLY serve us better.

Procton: We'll see if you're so smug when we have Matt Carroll trying to guard a power forward because of our lack of frontcourt depth.

Yea, Mark Lavoroni is CERTAINLY a great credible source. A rookie coach praising a rookie player. Genius, lets stop everything we're doing and let Mr Lavoroni take over all scouting, recruiting, and coaching. He clearly has an eye for these things based on his stellar track record as a head coach.

Hmm...that WOULD be a second year coach, but don't worry about it. You're probably right, though. Alexis Ajinca will CERTAINLY be more productive this season than Arthur, whom we could have had.

It's Linton Johnson, pending a physical. He addresses Brown's request for another wing defender.

Hmm...Linton Johnson? A journeyman who couldn't make the Wizards ahead of Songaila? I don't know if that's the answer to our problems at PF.

Michael:
Who said he was a power forward? He's another wing defender, which is one of the things Larry Brown has been asking for. And who says failing to beat out Songaila eliminates you as a potential NBA player.? Songaila is pretty good.
This isn't a coup, and no sensible person would label it that way. Maybe it's a small step in the right direction.

Darrell Arthur was the property of 4 teams on draft night, which to me says something, & had character issues... that was evident when he was kicked out of the rookie camp.

Johnson is a 6'8" sf/sg that can play D. He definitely isn't a pf and has more to offer the team than Davidson.
Posted by: Yeah? | Oct 27, 2008 10:37:47 PM
OK...well that's fine that ya'll think he's a wing and all, but he's played the vast majority of his minutes the last two years at PF. He hasn't PLAYED as an SF since 05-06. And while getting rid of Davidson for him is an improvement, taking your 13th-15th man's slot and moving that player to 10 or 11 doesn't seem like a huge gambit.

What do you all think of cutting Hollins and signing Ewing Jr? He's a scrappy player who could fill in at PF.
Posted by: Heeler | Oct 28, 2008 1:08:57 AM
Just because he has played at pf doesn't mean he is a pf and not a sf. Sometimes it is about how a guy fits into a team's scheme, roster, and the team's need. For example, GW played significant time at pf, but he is a sf. If anything Johnson's minuts dictate that he can play more than one position.

"...a small step in the right direction."
?
After all this time in Charlotte and after having attendance decrease each year, we should be happy about "...a small step?"
Predictions: lots of losses. A few close games or even wins against a few good teams just to keep people mildly interested. Declining and bottoming out attendance as Charlotte fights through horrible economic conditions. Pull-back of sponsorships. Horrific jump-shooting some nights that will be 20% and below. A good little mix of injuries that will be blamed for large losses. Owners will show up in the beginning then fade.
Unfortunately, Johnson should have read the writing on the wall a couple of years ago and bailed. Rick, ask some financial experts (the Sporting News is based in Charlotte) how much money in market value Bob and partners have lost in Charlotte. He paid $300 million and the franchise value today is probably somewhere between $200-225. He's probably got another $20-25 million in sunk cost in operational losses. Would it be conceivable if BJ sold today he and partners would take a $100 million hit? We know he is bracing for another financial hit this year by laying off almost all of his staff. With the NBA office also laying off lots of people, do you think the gamble of continuing the exercise in Charlotte and hoping that the Bobcats and NBA will reclaim its 80s popularity will work, financially? Would it be better to cut the losses and sell now?

Yeah?, the reason Darrell Arthur lasted to #27 in the draft, and was then moved around between four teams, was rumors regarding some kidneys problems he would have; just unsubstantiated rumors. It's not only coach Iavaroni's opinion on him; Arthur proved himself in the Jayhawks' NCAA title run. He is the kind of versatile power forward that the Bobcats needed. I heard everything about Ajinca's wonderful potential, but, he's not gonna be a contributor this season, and nobody can honestly tell when - if ever - he'll become a legit NBA rotation player.
Posted by: Sandy | Oct 28, 2008 10:28:07 AM
Sandy, I forgot about the kidney issue. The Bobcats probably got the same info. He was still traded 3 times though. And character could still be an issue.
