Bobcats' value is 2nd lowest in NBA
Did you see the Forbes magazine estimate that the Charlotte Bobcats are worth $284 million?
Forbes lists the Bobcats as having the second-lowest value in the league, ahead of the No. 30 Milwaukee Bucks at $278 million.
Some thoughts on all this:
-- Whenever these things come out – and Forbes does this every year – I’m reminded what former Charlotte Hornets president Spencer Stolpen would say: An NBA team is worth what someone will pay for it, not what Forbes thinks. Valid point, but I bet Forbes is in the ballpark.
-- If Forbes is anything close to accurate, the Bobcats are worth about $100 million less than the typical NBA team, and $16 million less than Bob Johnson originally paid for them. If you add a reasonable estimate of what Johnson has paid in working capital, he’s lost close to $100 million owning this team.
-- I got an email from a reader, a Bobcats fan who also works for one of the local banks in securities. He asked if I could see a scenario where Johnson simply gives up, shuttering the team and declaring corporate bankruptcy against the debts (like well over $100 million in future player salaries).
I replied that while I’d never anticipate things that happened on Wall Street the past six months, I still don’t believe an NBA franchise would go under.
If the Hawks and Grizzlies are any example, the league would intercede at some point and find a buyer. When Johnson would sell is quite another matter.
Here’s what I mean: I’m guessing Johnson wouldn’t sell the team right now for the $284 million Forbes says it’s worth. I’m also guessing there’s no one with both the interest and resources to write him a check for $284 million.
That means he’ll sit on his asset for awhile, knowing it would be costly, if not impossible, to move the thing out of Charlotte.
The wild card in all this is how the league’s power structure views Johnson. He’s already been ripped at least once by a fellow owner for calling out the Charlotte business community. I’m told by someone who would know that commissioner David Stern isn’t inclined to do much to ease Johnson’s financial pain.
I believe that sooner or later (more likely later), Michael Jordan will own controlling interest in this franchise and will leave it in Charlotte. I’m not saying he, personally, will own 51 percent. I’m saying at some point, Jordan and the rich guys who love to hang out with him will buy out Johnson.
And while Jordan’s basketball decisions are mixed at best, on balance that would put this franchise back on track.

Young and small market sports teams must win to have value. The beloved Carolina Panters can't draw when they are losing, even though PSL owners have paid for the seats. Imagine the gate during a losing season with out PSLs. I have a feeling that some want to see the Bobcats fail because the city built the Arena. If the Bobcats make the playoffs I'll save you a seat on the bandwagon.

bobcats suck a*S anyway. because of this stupid team. now everywhere you go everyone has to pay for parking, even at night time in the parkiing deck, where it use to be free. yall suck. leave charlotte and go somewhere else

Walter has a point because there are people that really express their hate of the creation of the Bobcats, and when they built the arena shit really hit the fan... But that main hump is the CHARLOTTE HORNETS... People cant except that they are gone and some people in the world still think the Hornets are still in Charlotte... I was telling a guy about my brothers 2 great years in Charlotte and how I like the city and he was like "yeah that Chris Paul is great teammate to play with in Charlotte", I had to say "Dude the Hornets moved to New Orleans", he says "when? and what about Katrina? Were they there for that?" LOL... I thought that was a funny moment in sports right there...
I have some points to make from the las blog too!!!!!!!!!
First of all I want to say that I appreciate you Bonnell for not having the balls to answer any of my post... But I am registering with the NBPA next month as an agent and I think I will get to personnally object your thoughts at the combine, portsmouth, or pre-draft, where you go I will be there...
Second of all you guys are commenting on wins against T-Wolves (traded KG, need I say more) and the Thunder (WHO?)... So before we praise lets do these same things against real caliber teams...
And third, to back up Nick, Bonnell Wilcox is not a fourth grader nor is he 3 ft tall, but he is not 7ft tall either... He is 6' 10/11" the same as Omeka so there is a big difference when playing against a guy like that than 70% of the other centers in this league...
But hey, its does seem like things are clicking and the ignition is turning over, all we got to do is pull out of the driveway, go down the street and hit the freeway to the town of the 8th seed... LOL! (just reaching folks)...
Holla!!!

It's bad enough Jordan having a portion of control of the B'Cats, but if he bought majority interest I would really quit on the team. He'll never get this team to spend any money and we'll just keep drafting crappy UNC players or great white hypes. The sooner he goes, the better for everyone.

Thanks "yo" for proven my point!

I think the sad part is, people used to complain about how Shinn never spent any money and now Johnson is here forking over big dollars to have Wallace, Richardson, & Okafor remain here even though half the seats are empty. Shinn had a packed house every night, never spent a penny, & the fans still supported the team.
Even if we arne't winning, you can't say that Bob isn't trying to do everything he can.
I hope we end up winning and fans show up but I don't want fans to show up ONLY becuase we are winning because great fans aren't determined by how often they decide to jump on the bandwagon.

The Bobcats made a ton of mistakes with their front office, management, and administration decisions. The Forbes article isn't a surprise, unfortunately.
Posted by: James | Dec 5, 2008 1:59:51 AM
A lot of people don't support them just because of the name, the logo, and the colors... For your average rich couple that would go to games and not give a damn about the game itself, I guess that matters. I bet T-shirt sales are at the bottom of the league too.
And prior to getting Richardson, Gerald is the only Bobcat to ever bring any excitement to the team.
It is a shame they're on the outside of the league. The only time they've ever mentioned the Bobcats on ESPN was when MJ suited up at one of the practices...

well what does every1 expect....im actually 1 of the few die hard bobcat fans......this town is sooo fickle....if the cats were 5 - 10 games over 500 then the place would be full...its all about whos is hot and where is the place to be seen .....very few poeple in this town know the meaning of a true fan....even with the nfl ( the sport that rules all ) are fans are so so...when we win...they show up.....if we were 1-15 no1 would be there......and even when we r 9 - 3...the fans are nowhere near denver / green bay / philly / ect....charlotte is a city full of transplants.....and corporate bank dollars.....30 % of ppl who go to panther games...and 50 % who go to bobcats games...are there bc they got free tickets....and prob there to see the team that the panthers / bobcats r playing.....its pretty sad actually...as a diehard fan of panthers since day 1...and a diehard fan of the hornets and now the bobcats its frustrates me how i put sooo much energy into both teams ( when i can barely afford a ticket ) and these ppl getting free tix from their business and friends are just there to have something to do and be seen......rather then chear for the team

It is very distressing to hear some of the comments here. Thank God there are some people in this city who think differently and support a professional franchise that means more to this city than you think. The Bobcats despite their record is beacon to many, especially the youth, who need these types of functions to focus on. Whether you selfish idiots can realize it or not this team inspires many young kids. All you think about is nonsense. This city really doesn't have much to offer naturally so the teams, hall of fames, museums etc. are the types of things that offer distractions to many from trouble. Not to mention the jobs and revenue that is produced, many people's livlihood is dependent on them. I am glad someone is willing to provide one job, not to mention many. Thanks NBA for your support and also thanks to all the sportswriters and newspeople that help.

The league is DEAD! The demographics they target does not have the disposable to attend the games. The folks that can afford to attend are unable to find any association with the players and their lifestyle.
Posted by: mike nelson | Dec 5, 2008 8:19:05 AM
Jobs and revenue produced? They keep cutting staff and do not have enough operating income to open all of the concession stands.
And if the youth are getting inspired by these guys it is a sad reflection on our youth. Why not look up to folks that actually make a difference. Doctors, teachers, police, fire, people of faith.
This team will not be here in 10 years and MLB will fill the void.

Kris:
Save your money and take a basic English course at CPCC. While I understand it is easy to mispell a word on these blogs your sentence structure and grammar could stand some improvement.
And just to clear up a fact, it would be impossible for 30% of The Panthers tickets to be free due to the PSL setup. They may be free to the end user but someone paid for those tickets.

For the people that say that Charlotte will only support a winner, I think the same thing can be said for every city. I moved here from Philadelphia and 4-5 years ago you couldnt give away Phillies tickets. Most weeknight Phillies games only had 15-16 thousand people. Now they are good and they sell out most of their home games. When the Sixers were good and had Allen Iverson they sold out most nights. Now they are keeping up with the Bobcats in attendance. I actually think considering the Bobcats all time record, their attendance is actually pretty good. I cant think of many more cities that would be averaging many more fans per game for a team with no superstars and no winning history. Once the Bobcats start winning and make the playoffs you will see that this is as good a sports market as any other.

T-dub,
I don't care what any of you guys say, a win is a win, and back to back wins are the start of a winning streak. Though the competition has been down, we are definitely playing out best basketball of the season. A certain Celtics team which has won like 8 straight or something, almost lost to us. If Ray could have finished in the paint we would have won that game. The team had one of the toughest strengths of schedule through the first 15 games of the season, something that nobody is commenting on. With the schedule easing up somewhat, we have a chance to put together some wins. Of course, we have a very tough one coming up first...

The "selfish idiots" are the ones that support these pro sports teams. Everyone gets "conned" into thinking there good for the city. That's BS! Wouldn't break my heart to see them all go under. What jobs do they bring in? Nothing to amount to anything unless you are one of the players or owners. How can anyone afford to go to the games or concerts that are held in these arenas anyway? I sure can't. Cities bend over backwards to support them but try to build a school, support the true arts, etc. and see what you get.

I am the biggest biggest fan, and will be for life. I just want to say, that people in Charlotte disgrace me. Man I'm only 19, but it saddens me to see how many people hate the teams here. when the panthers arent doing awsome ppl hate, no matter waht the cats are doing ppl hate. its sad. this city needs true fans.

KP,
Tickets are for sale for 5$, parking a block away is 5$. Take your family, wife, girlfriend, whatever and w/o eating its a total of about 20$..is that such a bad financial burden on you that you can't go?
Everyones saying, 'ohh they're cutting staff etc.' well were in a recession, and if everyone looks around the Bobcats aren't the only place in Charlotte cutting staff I'm sure, so its not fair to just jump right on them and accuse them of doing it. Plus, its a cycle..the fans come, provide $, buy merch, etc. and everyone gets paid, more fans more jobs, but since most people that constantly rag on this team do not make an effort to show up, yeah those tickets wont sell, jobs wont be needed, and merch wont sell so you once again cannot blame the bobcats directly for their struggles. The time they begin to get a winning streak going, everyone continues to think about how bad they are because they beat two teams that aren't spectacular teams..does it matter? The point of being a fan is to support them, hope that they continue the streak, and take the momentum into the big games against the teams that are above .500%

dave m- good point!
mason- quit your crying and just don't go to any of the events at the arena or boa stadium. good point about the schools though!
mike n- i have insider knowledge about the going ons at the arena and you are way off! let's see your comment after 11 years!
walter141- parking is still free, you just don't know where to look! don't blame your hangups and frustration on the bobcats!
kris- good stuff!

The answer is winning. I've been a Bobcats fan since the beginning, so I hate to hear about bandwagon fans, but if the team starts winning, more people will show up.
Posted by: Brooks | Dec 5, 2008 11:30:07 AM
I agree about the name... "Bobcats" as a name you can argue whether it's awful or not, but what you can't argue is that it has nothing to do with Charlotte as a city.
At least the name "Hornets" represented Charlotte. The old story that during the American Revolutionary War, commander Cornwallis occupied the Charlotte area but was driven out by hostile residents, prompting him to call Charlotte, "a hornet's nest of rebellion"
It's something at least. Bobcats mean nothing. I wish the NBA forced Shinn to change the name when he moved the team to New Orleans. Hornets name had become apart of the community and even if the team was tarnished because of SHinn, I'm sure the city would have gotten over that.
I wonder how Seattle forced the Sonics to change the name of the team to Thunder when they moved to Oklahoma.

Bobcats are only hated because it owned by and black man and run by black men.

This town makes me sick with how they treat their sports. A friend of mine sold his PSLs last year because the Panthers didn't do well, now he's wishing he could go watch because they're winning. I have been a bobcats fan as long as I've been an NBA fan, which is only 2 seasons, I've gone to 20+ games and I plan on supporting my bobcats at at least one away game this year too, I've got several jerseys and I have one on order for our new starting point guard to be. Needless to say the team needs real fans, fans who care about the game, look up and read articles daily to see whats going on, rumors etc, buy merchandise, sodas etc at the games. If the fans don't come, how can they justify a league max contract or going into the luxury tax so we can go 60+ wins.
My 2 cents for what its worth.

Bobcats are found throughout the Carolinas, and it's a play on the Carolina Panthers name, as well as the Carolina Cougars back in the day.
It might not have a direct tie with Charlotte the way the "Hornets" name did, but so what. The only "Panthers" you are going to find in anywhere near Charlotte are either in the zoo, on the football field, or in jail.
What's funny is, there's never been a documented case of a black panther in the Carolinas, they are usually black jaguars, or black leopards, etc. In Florida, what someone thought to be a black panther was caught, but guess what it ended up being? A black bobcat. Go figure.
People find such silly things to bitch about.

BJ is hurtin bad even with a custom built NBA area at 300m downtown even much worse than Shinn who had some Ringling Bros area to play in and only lost a mill a month at the end.
BJ got 21 mill shares for his BET from VIA when the stock was over 40 or 1.5 bill and now its lost 66% value while he paid 300 mill for the team plus all the expenses and payroll etc.
Even at a 66% loss he would have still had 660 mill left but after the team and expenses he may be down to zero and why he wants to sell.
He had bragged he was in it to make money when all others lost money?
He should have kept BET. Big mistake.
