Brown to Iverson: No regrets
No apologies necessary.
That was Bobcats coach Larry Brown's advice to Allen Iverson recently, when Iverson expressed some regrets. The two had a difficult relationship when Brown coached Iverson in Philadelphia, but they still admire each other.
"He was telling me how he made some mistakes,'' Brown recalled Friday. "I said, 'Wait a second; you scored 30,000 points or so.' I don't think anybody his size has done what he's done.
"So I told him don't even worry about that. Think of what you've done and what you've accomplished. Move forward.''
Iverson will be an unrestricted free agent this summer. Brown said he'd have no qualms with coaching Iverson again, but Brown questions whether this is the right fit for Iverson, because the Bobcats are still so far from title contention.
Iverson had a tough season, being traded from Denver to Detroit for Chauncey Billups and Antonio McDyess. Billups excelled in Denver, while Iverson never adjusted to a reduced role with the Pistons.
"I know he has a big chip on his shoulder now,'' Brown said. "He's got a trainer and is taking care of himself.''

Why do I get the sneaky suspicion that we may see Iverson in a Cats uniform this fall??

He may not be exactly fit the basic Bobcat needs (depth at SG and PF), but he would fill one gaping hole, a go-to scorer. Don't care that he's getting older, you give him the ball, he's still a 20+ ppg scorer.

PantherDave:
I'm not saying Iverson-as-Bobcat is impossible, but Brown went out of his way to say AI would be better off signing with a title contender. I don't think Larry was doing a mating dance with Iverson when I asked him that question. I heard Brown's comments more as a statement of respect.

Iverson will be a elite player in the NBA next year.... He's serious now, he has a trainer

It'd be nice to have someone to fill seats.
Hey Rick, what are the Cats' free agent possibilities, if any?
Posted by: Bro D. | Jun 5, 2009 9:40:10 PM
Bro D. -- It's early June and contracts haven't expired. We don't know who will own this team when free-agency starts. And you want me to give you info that isn't complete B.S. about what free-agency strategy might be? Come on. I'd have a better chance of predicting the weather next January, right?
I wrote weeks ago that Anthony Parker and Antonio McDyess would help, and that Rasheed Wallace is a fun pipe dream. Beyond that, it's mostly guess work right now, with weeks to go until the draft.
The real question -- which is occupying much of my work time -- is who will buy this thing from Johnson.

Bonnell, are you on twitter?

If the Bob's seek talent in Free Agency Land, they only have the mid-cap exception (around $5.3mm) to spend.
OKC, Atlanta, Memphis and Detroit are well below the cap and should be the most active teams for the top free agent talent - they are not restricted by the Mid-Cap exception in their spending plans.

I can predict the weather next January, cold, maybe a flurry. See, it's not that hard, sheesh Ricky B. it's just a blog. I guess the team owner thing is kind of a big deal.

I think Ricky B just has a hard time dealing w/ the inevitable criticism that would come after he made any speculation of any sort. Did you read the crap people wrote when he mentioned Dalambert as a thought?
Posted by: Bobby | Jun 6, 2009 10:52:32 PM
Lol, yeah, they don't like freethinkers around these here parts. It's ok Rick, you're Dalembert for Mek idea wasn't that bad.
Posted by: Bro D. | Jun 6, 2009 11:24:05 PM
Acquiring Dalembert for Okafor would be just plain CRAZY!!!! Dalembert is a good low post defender and he can block more shots than Okafor; but Okafor do score better than Dalembert and his offensive moves; though limited, can be call upon when you need low post scoring. The same can't be said about Dalembert......

Further, Okafor is clearly the better rebounder, which is an important thing if you're going to start Boris Diaw at the 4.

Thanks guys for proving my point.
I wasn't trying to say the Dalembert idea was great, I was just saying that Bonnell gets shat on no matter what he says.

There is no reason to sign Iverson. At this stage in his career, he is not the same player. He requires too many shots and is way too old to build a team around. I think coming off the bench would have been an ideal situation for him in Detroit but he managed to destroy that team. We don't need him!
