Hansbrough in Charlotte Wednesday

North Carolina's Tyler Hansbrough told me at the Chicago NBA combine he didn't intend to work out for more than about eight teams. The Bobcats -- with the 12th overall pick -- are on his list.

Hansbrough is among six players auditioning for the Bobcats at Time Warner Cable Arena Wednesday. Others scheduled: N.C. State's Ben McCauley, Southern Cal's Taj Gibson, James Madison's Juwann James, St. Joseph's Ahmad Nivins, and Memphis' Shawn Taggart.

Of those players Hansbrough would have the highest draft projection, although using the 12th pick on him might be a reach. He's generally ranked in the 18-25 span. Still, drafting a power foward with Hansbrough's motor and ability to get to the foul line would certainly match a Bobcats need.

I would think drafting Hansbrough would make it that much harder to justify bringing back Sean May. And it would give all the ABCers another excuse to come up Michael Jordan-Larry Brown conspiracy theories.

Hansbrough was a great college player, but he shouldn't be a lottery selection. I think he will have a moderately successful career as a journeyman. Taggart could probably use another year of collegiate experience, but I like his game.

It is stupid to say that getting to the foul line is a reason for drafting someone b/c he has to be in the rotation first! Show the NBA-caliber skills necessary for excelling in the league.

Tyler will have a better NBA career than Greg Oden.

Having said that, he is not a good fit for what the Bobcats need right now. A team like Philly, however.....

Posted by: JAT | Jun 9, 2009 1:29:55 PM

Tyler will be a starter and even an all star within two years. There is nobody in the league that will match his desire to win. He is exactally what the Bobcats need. Make it happen Mike!!!

Sure, bring him in and we'll just rename the team the Charlotte Heels.

Posted by: joe | Jun 9, 2009 2:01:42 PM

Well OF COURSE he'd workout here. We're the only team in the league who'd consider him this high. How long did Jeff McInnis hang on? Then again, Taj Gibson destroyed him once in the Tourney, and he can surely do it again.

Oh, and he won't be getting the "he looked at me mean" foul calls in the Association. Forget all that "going to the line" crap.

some funny A post on this topic!! better career than oden? why not say better than blake griffin since they have played against each other and both are coming out his year! an all star within 2 years? you can really see the 54 blue coming thru!

"In fact, if you want a good physical and athletic comparison to Hansbrough, try Beasley, the No. 2 pick in the draft last year. They are within an inch and a few half seconds of each other in virtually every category." -ESPN's Chad Ford

He's bigger and more athletic than most are willing to give him credit for, and it's pretty hard to discredit these results. If you were expecting him to show below average lateral quickness and court sprint speed, obviously you just haven't watched Hansbrough play.

Now, as an NBA executive, I'd still have some reservations about his skill set. However, he has the physical tools to play in the NBA, and when considering his uncommon drive and the progress hes already shown, I think its very dangerous to assume that he can't develop his game to become an effective NBA player.

Hansborough will never be anything more than an energy guy off the bench.

Posted by: Will | Jun 9, 2009 3:38:01 PM

hansbrough sucks....he will be the next cherokee parks of the nba. Guys are gunna eat him up down low on the block not to mention he travels on half his moves. 90% of his shots are going to end up in the cheap seats. If the Bobcats draft him I will never go to another game. All those other UNC draft picks have worked out so well for the Cats.....not.

Posted by: jw | Jun 9, 2009 4:45:47 PM

Rick you just made my day. If taking Hansborough makes it harder to keep May, I say.....GO HANSBOROUGH! I wasnt even a fan of TH...but if thats what it takes to send ole Sean across the street to start his new career at the Burger King in the Transportation Center...then tell me where the Jerseys will go one sale first...I wanna get in line!

Posted by: mike | Jun 9, 2009 4:47:41 PM

Why in the world do so many hate this kid?
I say he'll continue to improve and be a legitimate NBA player. All-Star? Doubt it but a good player. May wil be make or break
by training camp. I would love Curry in here with DJ and Felton.

Posted by: MajorLeague | Jun 9, 2009 6:43:32 PM

Because he became a "great player" by getting more BS calls than anybody in the history of basketball.

Posted by: Michael Procton | Jun 9, 2009 9:02:21 PM

Hansbrough made JJ Redick likable, which is pretty amazing, with his ability to go to the line without being fouled. His 1 and a half post moves and frog like jump shot are really gonna translate at the NBA level.

I don't have a big problem with taking tyler. Obviously I'm not objective here as a heels fan. But If you think Tyler will be a 12 and 5 guy in the nba (which I do) then why not?? THis draft is REALLY WEAK!! so getting a 12 and 5 SOLID! PF is a good pick! at 12. or anywhere in the draft. If you believe he's going to be "Terrible" in the nba then no they shouldn't but if your among the school of thought that think he will be a solid player then it makes sense. The only other options at 12 would be Earl Clark or Johnson out of Wake. ANd Clark was hard to motivate in college So I'm scared of him.

Posted by: Cheven | Jun 10, 2009 8:49:29 AM

I almost hope we take Tyler and keep May just to watch Procton's head explode.

Posted by: apauldds | Jun 10, 2009 8:52:04 AM

How come we haven't mentioned the obvious yet? If we did draft Hansborough (a big IF), we'd be trading down to do it. I can think of many players that should be available at 12 who are probably a better choice.

If the team wants Hansborough, we have to wait and see what we get for the 12th pick before we can say if it's a good choice.

Bonnell predicted that plenty of people would hate on Tyler just because of where he went to school and plenty of people decided to prove Bonnell right.

By the way, I think Raymond Felton is a solid NBA player who will continue to get better w/ Larry Brown as his coach.

Posted by: Bobby | Jun 10, 2009 9:31:13 AM

LOL@ Procton! He got that one right..maybe he should go to Dallas or Cleveland, they already have FLOP-tastic front court players!! hahahaha

Posted by: Bobcat Terry | Jun 10, 2009 9:55:03 AM

You ABC idiots are funny! Tyler will be a VERY good pro and at this point he would be a DEFINITE and cheaper upgrade to Sean May.

Posted by: LJ | Jun 10, 2009 10:23:34 AM

Michael Procton, you are a serious IDIOT!

Tyler EARNED everything he got. There is not one player in the HISTORY of the ACC that got knocked around more than Hansbrough. YES he created alot of contact but he was hammered each and every night he played because he was damn near UNSTOPPABLE at the college level. His record and tenure speak for themselves!

Go crawl back to your whole....

Posted by: LJ | Jun 10, 2009 10:26:25 AM

Procton hates Hansbrough because he killed dook for four years.

Posted by: ChileG | Jun 10, 2009 11:04:38 AM

Why dont we just pick danny green as well? Please the best pick at 12 will be Gerald Henderson. He can score (even though his jumper is suspect, but will improve), and more importantly his D is NBA ready and he can rebound. With he and wallace we could go small and not miss a beat defensively, but still be quick. Problem is he wont be there when we pick.

Picking Hansjob would be a waste of a first round pick, unless it was cleveland with the last pick. But then LeBron would be tatooing his forehead with no lookers all game long, second thought maybe not. Stick him in San Antonio or Utah.

Posted by: DNYCE | Jun 10, 2009 11:34:46 AM

Like someone said, only consider Hansbrough for a trade-down to a lower pick.

When you see Lamar Odom, Rashard Lewis, and Hedo Turkoglu playing big roles in the NBA Finals, Earl Clark looks like a strong candidate to consider in the draft. 6'10" guys who have guard-like perimeter skills create so much for your offense. Slot Clark into that backup PF role with the possibility of future advancement. See ya, Sean.

Posted by: DeLaQuest | Jun 10, 2009 11:52:22 AM

I don't "hate" anyone. I think he'll be a shitty NBA player because he has no athleticism, no post moves, and won't be able to hit his precious free throws when he loses 80% of his calls.

Posted by: Michael Procton | Jun 10, 2009 11:53:51 AM

dookies crying about calls. lol!
at least Hansbrough wasn't shitty in college like dook has been.

Posted by: ChileG | Jun 10, 2009 11:58:06 AM

amazing how Hansbrough dominated dook for four years with no skills. dook really did stink.

Posted by: ChileG | Jun 10, 2009 12:03:30 PM

he does have 4 wins at cameron endor stadium and a national championship, though. amazing that he was able to dominate duke for four years with no skills. they really have stunk lately.

Posted by: ChileG | Jun 10, 2009 12:48:30 PM

Procton I am with you. Once Tyler starts banging with the big boys he will start crying for Roy....But what the heck we already are trying to decide if we should offer another dead beat Chapel Hill guy (May).

Posted by: Steve | Jun 10, 2009 12:50:21 PM

Heels fan PLEASE try to be objective on this one...NO ONE disputes the numbers he put at UNC..u cant! BUT...

We are not talking about playing UVA or Va Tech every night..what position can he play? PF? Yea right and take on Garnett, Duncan, Amare, Aldridge, Rashard Lewis...Please!

Or how bout SF and have to play against LeBron, Paul Pierce, McGrady, Turkoglu, Caron Butler or Danny Granger every night??

Its not that we discredit what he did in COLLEGE...this is the pros..Only the best of the best play there...u cant hide him on Defense and he cant get around or go through any of those players I just named..can he? I didnt think so

And YES I am a DUKE fan but I also thought Shav Randolph, McRoberts and Redick would be bums too...and I was right!

Posted by: Bobcat Terry | Jun 10, 2009 1:47:30 PM

Procton FTW (I can't believe I just typed that)

Posted by: trudukefan | Jun 10, 2009 3:09:29 PM

Get McCauley in the second round. He's a mean son of a gun, a banger off the bench. Reminds me of Brad Miller.

Posted by: psw1151 | Jun 10, 2009 3:38:24 PM

Procton hates Tyler because of his work ethic and UNC degree both of which he lacks.

Posted by: jeff | Jun 10, 2009 6:23:09 PM

Procton, know one said Tyler was going to be a star. He will develop into a solid bench role player. Did google not tell you that?, you are a talent scout?

Posted by: JD | Jun 10, 2009 6:44:30 PM

Two positions SG and PF needed to get rolling with the team in form. The Bobcats will draft a North Carolina (state) player. Colleges as Wake, Carolina or Duke. Teams do that. They keep track of college players in their region and coast that other scouts don’t get to look at. They know what to expect from them on most occasions. No other professional basketball team goes through what the Bobcats go through and they do the same when drafting sometimes. So what! They are not trying to draft every player off of one college team. That is ridiculous. That’s not smart business but if Micheal sees fit to get one of those players that can help the team. Hey, people gripped last year at the start with the decisions from MJ, he got the players Brown needed at the time to help change the atmosphere and play and then people wanted to start giving credit and now here we are with people gripping again. They will do what they have to do to get this franchise going. SG: Now I say drafting Henderson would not be a good idea just because of the shooting factor. We need a shooter that has it in his head right now. Not something he is growing into. We are past that stage in this franchise. If you want to chance defense in hopes improving. Take Ellington. Other than Curry, he grew into be a pure shooter and now at a point to flourish because in the NBA we all know coming and moving off ball screens is what help makes those players an effective shooter and Ellington does a great job at that. Mid range effectiveness and can form into the post. He can be a RIP or Hinrich or Gordon or McCants. Gordon is all we really need. So Ellington yes. If not Chase Budinger would be nice. Other notables are definitely DeMar DeRozan, Tyreke Evans, Terrence Williams, James Hardin, or Eric Maynor (PG) ready to step in if either one is there. PF: I say go after Rasheed or make another offer to Varejao or Landry. If not, this is where you might have to go for Tyler in terms of production and potential and coaching. He can apply and provide for a Larry Brown coached team. He has the fire and size and energy that cannot be measured and might hit Gold on this one when it was thought it would have been with the Morrison pick. Other notables are Gani Lawal, or Josh Heytvelt. Go Bobcats draft smart and wise like I know you will. Forget the nay sayers. And Keith you are right Tyler measures to Beasley and Griffin. National Player of the year status baby.

The long history of UNC players who have nba championship rings dwarfs the number of duke players with NBA rings. The total would astound you. And I hate to say it, but Sean May was the biggest waste of talent I have seen. I can't say the same for JJ Reddick because I don't believe he has NBA talent. He was just the biggest bust and misjudgement of talent in the history of basketball with Morrison a close 2nd. But it is downright sinful that May cannot control his appetite. Tyler is a perfectionist though not the most agile athlete he is athletic and like the nba executive stated, you would be foolish to think he cannot polish his game to the nba level. Larry Brown will get the bobcats where they need to be and doesn't play favorites. Ask May and Felton, and Brown and Jordan would love to have Tyler on board- so do not be surprised and yes, goodbye Sean, you can wallow on out to the pasture like a big fat lazy cow.
