Felton's agent focused on Bobcats
Raymond Felton's agent, Kevin Bradbury, called me back to say that while they don't have an agreement, he's working toward one with the Bobcats.
Felton wants to be in Charlotte and Larry Brown and Michael Jordan want him here. The issue -- isn't it always? -- is reaching a contract number both sides accept.
It sounds like Bradbury has a good grasp of the situation: That he should work with the Bobcats until a deal is made or the team gives him reason to turn elsewhere. Bradbury said several other NBA teams have inquired about Felton, but he's focused on completing a deal with Charlotte. I won't be surprised if that takes a while, but I bet it gets done here.

he proved last year that he can be relied upon to handle either guard spot (more comfortably at point) and has the STONES to take and make game winning shots!
i used to want felton to be traded but i see his value now that he seems to have reduced his turnovers and become a more reliable shooter..lets get him back with DJ & Raja..going to be tougher in the East this year than anticipated but I'm still convinced we can squeeze in the playoffs this year

Yeah, I never understood why people freaked out when we drafted DJ, as if that meant adios to Felton. It's kinda nice to have more than one point guard on the roster, ya know. Point guard and small forward are the only positions where we have adequate quality depth.

I mean, I understood (but didn't agree with) why people freaked out about taking DJ over Lopez, but not about the implications to Felton.

Center is our position of greatest depth. Moreso than PG and SF.
Posted by: DeLaQuest | Jul 8, 2009 11:13:04 AM
We should trade Felton for a veteran PG who can backup DJ, and a Backup at PF

I'm defining depth as the number of quality players, not just warm bodies. DJ and VladRad bring much more to the table as reserves at their respective positions than Nazr and Diop do at center.

Hoopsworld.com is reporting that the Spurs have agreed to a three-year deal with McDyess. So there goes that possibility, even though it was a slim one. Hopefully this motivates the Bobcats to give the full MLE to Brandon Bass, who I'd rather have anyway.

There's still Diogu, right? And lets not forget the one and only Sean May...ok lets do.

Bobcat Terry-
Appreciate your loyalty but if you actually look at the stats, Raymond Felton is one of the WORST clutch players in the League:
http://www.82games.com/0809/CSORT11.HTM
He's rated 56th best (much worse when adjusted for games/minutes)...unfortunately, the team's best rated player. And check out this Close Range Shooting whilst your over there. I think he's one of the bottom 5 in the League.
I like Raymond but because this team has no clutch scorer, he's being relied upon to do something that he's not comfortable or well suited for.
Got off the green MJ! Find somebody who can score when the game is on the line!

can people stop acting like brandan bass is charles oakley? we sign bass, more than likely we have yet another average big eating up our cap room. play patient while radmonovic and mohommed are eating up the cap and 2 years from now we're in the market for a big time player. Take note from the teams that are in dominant positions....LA got kobe on a draft day deal. Cleveland drafted lebron. Boston drafted pierce and rondo. san antonio drafted duncan, parker and ginobli. we drafted felton, okafor, augustin, now henderson, we've got ajinca who needs development.
patience is needed. sam vincent set us back 2 years. don't set us back 2 more by making another bad move for a 4 that we really don't need. 3 man rotation at the 4/5 is all thats necessary and with radmonovic and wallace, we have the size to play small at the 4 at times and the speed to be successful doing so.

DJ will be the guy with the game on the line. maybe not this year but going forward for sure.
Posted by: charlottean | Jul 8, 2009 1:29:25 PM
I agree spending too much on Brandon Bass would be a mistake, but patience is about to get us into another fine mess relative to our PF need. Every year we wait, and watch, as players sign elsewhere. Channing Frye is being courted by several teams (not Charlotte). Dwight Gooden is getting a hard look from the Hornets (I'd really like Gooden here...where are you Bobcats??). Even Wilcox is starting to get some dialogue going with teams. Soon all that's left will be bottom of the barrel. Maybe that's what they want. I can hear it now..."we tried hard and couldn't get several of those players, but we're glad to reach a new contract with Fatty McMay"! I WILL SCREAM!!

if we get sean may to sign a veteran minimum deal with team options....that could be a great situation. the guy has shown he can not only play at the nba level but dominate games at the nba level. if he's an injury risk and he's getting the league minimum you know you got a guy that could be awesome or could be injured and the minimum is worth that risk. and people are saying our 2nd round pick needs to get on the sean may diet and he'll be a 4 in the league.

Yeah, LA got Kobe in a draft day deal ... with CHARLOTTE, because elite players generally don't want to be stuck in a small market. That's why we have to be aggressive when we have a chance to sign an up-and-coming young player.
We cannot count on being remotely as lucky as San Antonio was -- first winning the lottery to take Robinson, then winning the lottery again to take the best power forward in history (Duncan), then repeatedly finding gems late in the draft (Parker, Ginobili, etc.). Not to mention that there are no state income taxes in Texas, which is a plus in free agency.
Did San Antonio do well in the draft. Well, yeah, obviously. But I don't recall the Spurs sitting on their hands in free agency. Whether it was Robert Horry or Antonio McDyess, if they see a free agent who can help them, they do something about it. We need a backup four, Bass can help us, he won't cost a hell of a lot (even his agent is now admitting he won't get the full MLE), and we aren't even being mentioned as a team he's considering.

Why not bring in Leon Powe?
Posted by: zach | Jul 8, 2009 3:03:12 PM
Great news!
According to 82games we were SECOND in the league in opponent's PER at the PG position and Felton had a stellar 13. Also our starting lineup of Mek/Boris/Crash/Raja/Felton was tied for 6th in the league in plus/minus stats.
Barring a major injury or something unforseen, getting Felton back and adding solid depth behind Raja we're pretty much a lock for the playoffs next season.
I realize we need a backup 4, but unlike last season it's a BACKUP and not a starter. Don't forget we do have guys in Crash & Vlad who can play that position in spot minutes and we'll most likely bring back Juwan Howard or someone similar.
Already getting excited about next season and it's what...3 months away still?

Because Leon Powe destroyed his knee

Thank you ASChin, for the response to BobcatTerry. I will continue to be a broker record on this message board until you're all willing to stop looking at the world through Bobcat Orange glasses.
Ray Felton is NOT A GOOD SHOOTER. There are no stats, anywhere, that will support a claim that he is. We are obviously going to re-sign him for yet another long-term deal, and it drives me crazy to read posts making him out to be a star.
In the next few weeks, we are going to have locked in 9 players from the current roster to long-term deals. The problem with that? Those players are not that good, and haven't produced anything close to a winning season. No one else sees a problem with that?

I don't think the Bobcats are committed to winning championships! Making the play offs is not enough anymore. When you think mediocre that is what you get. Most teams are thinking championship when we are trying to "squeeze into the playoffs" Come on people, I know Charlotte's market is not very good but why have a team if we are not going to try and win a Championship. We need expect more out of our professional teams here, because if we don't they will just leave for a larger city that will force them to do the things they need to do to try and win championships. We are not making any moves to improve the team. " Lets make some moves Charlotte", Slogan of the year!

Second best in the league in opponent's PER at the PG position? In Larry Ball defense is what initiates the offense.
There's much more to the game than just shooting, but regardless...you do realize it's mostly Felton's 3 pt shot that's hurting him right? He actually had a slightly better 2 pt % than DJ did last year.

Hey Orlando needs a backup Center, and right now there are very few avaliable. The best are Pachulia, who reportedly agree to a deal with the Hawks and the other is Nesterovic.
Could it be possible that we send Nazr to Orlando and get Ryan Anderson? I'm not sure if Orlando is willing to do that, but it would be easier for them to get the last two years of Nazr and sign Bass than signing Nesterovic or maybe Collins.

ASChin & Bobsrealist--i never said Raymond was a great shooter..I said that he has become a more reliable shooter..compared to where he was, hell I will take reliable..LOL..
he is not a Brandon Roy or Deron Williams quality shooter but he has improved in that area and i gotta give him props..
now it doesnt say much when you're the cutest girl at a fat chick party but still...
Posted by: Bobcat Terry | Jul 8, 2009 4:57:48 PM
i'm over here dying at the hopefulness needed to imply that orlando would give us ryan anderson for nazr mohommed. that's hilarious. they essentially traded courtney lee and turkolu for ryan anderson and vince carter and you think they're gonna take on a guy that couldn't even crack OUR lineup last year and is overpaid for 2 more years on top of that?
we need that guy to get injured badly.
Posted by: charlottean | Jul 8, 2009 6:19:16 PM
oh yea and raymond felton, like gerald wallace....is a gamer. stats don't win games, ask jason richardson. and felton once upon a time could knock down a 3 with consistency. he's had 2 terrible years in a row and i would bet that he's been in the gym working on that all summer. there aren't 30 pgs better in this league. he's a legit starting pg. for him to be our backup will be phenominal.
