A coaching award to do without
The Cleveland Cavaliers' Mike Brown might want to keep his head low after winning NBA Coach of the Year last spring.
When New Orleans Hornets coach Byron Scott was fired Thursday, that made it 4-of-5 on those seemingly elite coaches getting the ax.
The other recent Coach-of-the-Year winners no longer with their organizations: Sam Mitchell (Toronto), Avery Johnson (Dallas) and Mike D'Antoni (Phoenix). Of those three only D'Antoni is back as a head coach, this time with New York.
I wasn't exactly shocked that Hornets owner George Shinn would have general manager Jeff Bower coach on an interim basis. The Hornets are 3-6 and over the luxury tax thresold, so spending big money on a replacement coach right now probably isn't the best course.

This probably removes all the suspense, since the Hornets refused to discuss a new contract. Byron is now free to spend the rest of the NBA season preparing for his next opportunity. He can now join the line for those who hope to replace Phil Jackson.

Any idea at all why the hornets didn't just fire him after their disastrous playoff exit? That would be like the panthers deciding not to fire John Fox after his latest playoff embarassment, then he starts the next season 3-5 and they fire him then... wait a second...

He'll probably land on his feet somewhere. Solid coach, and I'd be surprised if NO improves much because of the move.
