Should "Bobcats'' name depart, too?

If Michael Jordan listens to his customers, and potential customers, he'll seriously consider a name change from "Bobcats'' once his purchase of Charlotte's NBA franchise is complete.

Too many of you have emailed me with that suggestion not to think it's an issue to many Charlotteans. You didn't like Bob Johnson naming the team after himself, and you sure don't see this as a positive once Johnson is no longer majority owner.

This wouldn't be cheap. I spoke with an NBA executive who estimated it would cost the franchise anywhere from $3 million to $10 million to rebrand the team. There are so many signs and logos that would have to be replaced, and any pre-existing merchandise gets deeply discounted or thrown away. (Example: You could have bought an Adam Morrison jersey REALLY cheap last March.)

By the way -- that same NBA insider who estimated the cost at $3-$10 million said it would be money well spent.

Yes let's dump the terrible Bobcats name. Let's pick a name more identifiable with Charlotte or at least something less corny sounding.

Posted by: Jonah H. | Feb 28, 2010 10:27:01 PM

i dont have a problem with the name, however, the fact that Bob Johnson named it after himself annoys me.

it seems to me that the most common name changes include "Flight" and "Cougars".
i really cant stand the name "Flight". i understand the significance and historical connection, but the name itself is non-NBAish. it seriously sounds more like a WNBA name than anything.

in today's NBA, finding a creative team name without fringing upon a D-League-esque name is difficult.

i could understand a move to "Cougars", but that makes us sound more like a college name than anything. i heard "Dragons" was an option back when the team was choosing names, but im not sure how i like that either. sounds too childish to me.

How about "The Charlotte Grudge Holders"

Posted by: on and on | Feb 28, 2010 10:36:53 PM

I don't think it would hurt if we had a vote again... One vote would be "Do we keep the name Bobcats?" If it's a resounding "no" then we could send in suggestions, vote on a top 3 and use that to select from. I agree with Reggie... "Flight" should be a NO. It does sound like a WBNA or even XFL team name.

Posted by: PantherDave | Feb 28, 2010 10:47:49 PM

Yo Rick, what do you think about the Charlotte Flying Biscuits? It incorporates the flying part that everyone seems to get a jolly over and Charlotte's love of comfort food, Bojangles, etc. See the logo I made here: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4044/4395744677_66b6874cfa_o.jpg

Posted by: Yo | Feb 28, 2010 10:50:15 PM

touche, on and on...

Just leave the name alone... there's nothing wrong with Bobcats. It may have been named after Bob Johnson, but it's not like it doesn't carry significance to the area. Afterall, it is in line with our other professional team, which is ideal.

Posted by: appstategrad2008 | Feb 28, 2010 10:50:51 PM

Why not pick a name like "Royals", since Charlotte is the Queen City. Or since NC has such a military presence pick a name that represents that connection (Arsenal, Bombers, Cadets, Jets, etc.)? Just throwing ideas out. There has to be more NC representative team names out there (other than Flight).

Posted by: Nick | Feb 28, 2010 10:52:55 PM

If people made fun of the Bobcats name, the Flying Biscuits would take it to a whole new level. What would happen if they had a bad night? Would we call them the "Flying AIR biscuits"?

Posted by: PantherDave | Feb 28, 2010 11:01:47 PM

The team should have been the Cougars to begin with. The ABA team here in the 70's was named the Carolina Cougars and during the naming process of the Bobcats, it was supposedly considered. I'm not sure who if anyone owns the former naming rights to the ABA team, but imagine the possibilities with the name... We would have a whole line of modern and throw back jersey's available. The best throwback of all is Larry Brown. Since he's coached both teams.

Another idea to help regain the old Hornet fan base would be to play preseason games in Columbia, Greenville, Asheville, Winston, & G-boro. Then play 1-2 regular season games a year in Raleigh. It would be even better if the 'Canes would play a game here.

Now that is definitely the most fitting and appropriate name that anyone has come up with. But I have to say, I love the flying biscuit logo!

Posted by: nc stater | Feb 28, 2010 11:13:03 PM

should have never let shinn take the hornets name with him.

Posted by: joe cool | Feb 28, 2010 11:32:35 PM

The need to get marketing down here in Upstate SC. NO ONE here knows anything about the Bobcats unless the really follow the NBA. I have season tickets, it an 1:15 drive to the arena from my house in Greenville, SC. Market the team down here some and people will come.

Posted by: Shane Stone | Feb 28, 2010 11:38:26 PM

Flight is an acquired taste but it's growing on me. I do hope he changes it from Bobcats, anything else would be an improvement. I may even start following the NBA now. Yeah MJ!

Posted by: nativeNCian | Feb 28, 2010 11:43:45 PM

Flight is worse than Bobcats. And Bobcats is really bad, although it has a lot of competition for stupidest team name in the NBA. Cougars wouldn't sound too bad, what with the ABA connection.

But Bobcats really does need to go.

I'd go with Charlotte Tropics, and draft Will Ferrell immediately. Tickets sales through the roof.

Posted by: Mike | Feb 28, 2010 11:53:19 PM

I'd like Carolina Cougars, but Flight really sounds like a WNBA name (agreed with PantherDave). Or maybe, some new idea will pop up - if MJ is open to suggestions.
On the other hand, what's this big fuss about the name? Is it worth it for a franchise that lost dozens of millions of dollars to spend millions more just to change the name?
I'd say do it, but only after this organization starts being profitable - not right now. In the meantime, Bobcats is all right, and what really matters is how the team is performing. Winning, not simply changing the name, will attract more bandwagon fans and thus put an end to money losses.

Posted by: Sandy | Mar 1, 2010 12:05:02 AM

Carolina Airborne? Wow! I just brainstormed that! It has the Flight connotation while reognizing our huge military base, and implying MJ is still somehow Air Jordan, and our team can take to the air.

Charlotte Shockwave

Posted by: Brett Johnson | Mar 1, 2010 12:08:32 AM

Rick-

Is it even remotely possible that the League could organize an offseason name change/switch with New Orleans?
The Hornets nickname still has a lot of pull around here and I'm certain that it would help tickets sales and improve public opinion.

Shinn would then be able to rebrand the team however he wants when he moves the team again (likely) to another major market (Seattle Sonics???).

Also, I like Cougars as a backup except for the fact that the name is now associated with middle-aged, sex-addicted women.

Posted by: ASChin | Mar 1, 2010 12:10:58 AM

OK, now I'm really brainstorming. With Carolina Airborne, the logo could be a fighter jet with a swoosh behind it shaped like a Nike swoosh. MJ could strike another deal with Nike and recoup his investment money much faster.

Posted by: wildcat | Mar 1, 2010 12:14:30 AM

How 'bout we drop the "Bob" in Bobcats and switch it out with "Wild"? That way we keep our look without losing everything.

The Charlotte Wildcats

With Carolina Airborne, MJ could strike another deal with Nike, using a fighter jet trailed by a Swoosh as the team logo.

Posted by: wildcat | Mar 1, 2010 12:21:26 AM

How about the Charlotte Rick Bonnells?

Seriously. Bobcats gotta go. Great point about "Cougar."

What about Catfish? or Polecats? or Possums?

Posted by: Kelly Tripuka | Mar 1, 2010 12:25:35 AM

I like the 'cougars' but I think we need to move away from the Cat names.

Dragons is a good one- but people were crying about it being "gang related" LOL...the name cant be any more gang related then the thugs that make up most NBA/NFL teams.

Whats really funny are you ratards that want to get rid of "bobcats" because its named after the owner, yet want to change it to something that MJ could market towards himself.

Posted by: MrTouchdown | Mar 1, 2010 12:42:15 AM

How does spending the 3 mil plus to rebrand get us to the playoffs next year? Assuming were not talking about ripping out the pictures of Primoz, Capono and Okafor by Monday....you can tinker with the logo and colors of the team all you want, but let's not sweep the past six years under the rug.

Posted by: HPCatFan | Mar 1, 2010 12:49:57 AM

Being probably the only person in Charlotte with the team's "half bobcat face/half basketball" logo tattooed permanently upon my right arm, and plans to add "NBA Champions" and the years as they come in the future... I strongly suggest changing the name of the team to "Carolina Cougars" to help charlotte and the rest of the carolinas remember a bit of their past, and they could maintain the same logos just change the name. They could/should also make "Rufus Lynx" into "Puma" or just "Cougar" and any color but orange please :)

Posted by: tattoo | Mar 1, 2010 12:55:31 AM

I don't Bobcats too much but just say no to "Flight" I'd rather be the Charlotte Ostriches than that. Cougar is out too, unless the Charlotte Milfs is an option. The Flying Biscuits isn't health conscious enough, sadly, the NBA Cares will nix that one.

I vote Sentinels. Lots of logo possibilities.

I really think orange and light blue should be our colors though.

Posted by: Bro D. | Mar 1, 2010 1:39:45 AM

I hate singular nicknames like Magic or Heat so Flight sounds awful to me. How about Aviators, a name seriously considered the first time around? I can't believe anyone would say Wildcats, I believe there's already a team with that nickname in Mecklenburg County.

Posted by: JIMUNC | Mar 1, 2010 1:56:40 AM

Honestly, I would LOVE to change the name... not because I have a problem with Bob Johnson, the name just sucks... even Rufus is lame. I've lived here my whole life, guess how many bobcats I've seen.

Flight sounds like a WNBA team. Sounds like the OKC thunder.

Cougars would be cool, but it was the CAROLINA cougars, not Charlotte. Also cougars does carry a different connotation these days.

I really wouldn't mind something centered around MJ. In fact I can already see the road jerseys... jet black with the jumpman logo on the front... at the very least you could sell some nice merchandise. Who looks good in orange?

Posted by: David | Mar 1, 2010 1:59:44 AM

Charlotte Arsenal

Posted by: Mike G | Mar 1, 2010 3:29:32 AM

Leave the name, were finally starting to be recognized in the NBA and if we change our name now we'll be the laughing stock of the league. Nobody outside of Charlotte knows that the Bobcats were named after Bob Johnson if that is indeed true. If I were to change it, I'd consider either the Charlotte Cougars or Charlotte Bears

Posted by: Matt | Mar 1, 2010 4:02:21 AM

Posted by: rob | Mar 1, 2010 6:17:32 AM

I wouldn't change the name just to be changing it. "Cougars" is the best choice I've heard and that's due only to it's historic significance. "Flight" is horrible.

I saw the suggestion of playing 1-2 games in Raleigh and that's a really bad idea. We have a new state of the art arena in downtown Charlotte at taxpayer expense and we should get every chance to get a return on our investment. The idea of playing preseason games in other NC/SC towns and cities is a good idea though.

Posted by: David E Houston | Mar 1, 2010 6:59:04 AM

Posted by: Tim | Mar 1, 2010 7:10:42 AM

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE CHANGE THE NAME ASAP!!! I thought it was corny from day one, and that was before I realized that it was named after the owner. Even by itself, it's corny and hardly marketable.

The uniform color change this year was a definite plus from primary orange to blue. We looked like a rec league team sponsored by a local construction company.

Please MJ, it would be money well spent!

Have George Shinn float the idea that N.O. got a hand-me-down name when they got the Hornets name. He could hold a contest in N.O. to rename the Hornets with a name that means something to N.O. and reflects its history and traditions, and let Charlotte have its Hornets name back. Win-win.

Posted by: switch it | Mar 1, 2010 7:24:08 AM

The old hornet wasp bumblebee name old. So what about Queens, Twinks, Homies to identify with a fem city name? Bobcat is def too rugged outdoors and masuline.

Dont worry they will want to change a new name again after Jordan screws up and loses most games and millions like he did with the Wizards and Bobcats and refuses to spend big bucks.

Posted by: brandon | Mar 1, 2010 8:03:05 AM

How about Charlotte Cougar Hunters? There will be a large influx of hot middle aged women getting season tickets and giving the team some "carrot and a stick" reason to win some games!

Seriously, instead of focusing on the name, let's focus on the game! The playoffs are staring us in the face, we just need to GET IT! Hopefully Jordan figures out a way to motivate these guys to step it up a bit EVERY NIGHT!

Posted by: redhotdave | Mar 1, 2010 8:06:57 AM

I think Flight has the most appeal if we're going to stuggle through remarketing the team. It definitely would tie MJ to the team name even more than Bobcats did for Bob Johnson. I'd be ok with that!

Haha, I love the Carolina Catfish.

Seattle was able to keep the Sonics name for their future team, I really don't see why Charlotte couldn't have kept the Hornets. It was obviously David Sterns intention to have a team back in Charlotte as soon as possible. If we'd have kept the Hornets name/logo some of the grudge holders might have let go...a little.

Posted by: Hello???? | Mar 1, 2010 8:59:16 AM

First of all, the cats are losing money by the ton, why would they do a ten million dollar name change until the club is making money? I guess I'm strange, I never thought Johnson chose the name for himself because, of the names I can remember that were on the table at the time, I liked Bobcats best anyway. I would like to see a team colors change to reflect North Carolina's college basketball history though but I'd fix the team before I did anything, if that were me. That's one of the nicest things about not having hundreds of millions of dollars on the line, you can pontificate about stuff like this all you want. But business wise, that money could be put to MUCH better use elsewhere. I mean what does Charlotte want? A good basketball team, or a new name for a bad one? Personally, I wouldn't care if they were called the flouncing sissies, if they took the court and were always competitive. But that's just me.

Rick, it certainly was in the NBA's power. They did it with the Sonics and Seattle, and the NFL did it with the Cleveland Browns. Charlotte should've been able to keep the Hornets name.

But that's ancient history at this point. Personally, I think "Bobcats" is just fine. The people who don't like the team probably aren't going to be won over by a name change anyway.

There are some stupid NBA team names including Wizards, Grizzlies, Raptors and worst of all the Thunder! Honestly I don't mind the Bobcats name, sounded stupid at first but it has grown on me. I also never knew it was named after Bob Johnson until the last few days. Sad the NBA would let him name the team after himself, but really with all of the fans with Jersey's and apparel is it really worth changing the name now???

Exactly my thought it wouldn't work unless you wanted to have Cougar Night with drink specials for ladies over 40! I would say just Drop the Bob and leave it as The Charlotte Cats, Logo and everything stays the same, or as someone said the Wildcats. Dragons REALLY!, Flying Biscuits I hope that was a joke. I like the idea of the Hornets but I think it would be way to much involved.

Posted by: MrTouchdownisaRetard | Mar 1, 2010 9:58:45 AM

Gotta admit, whoever mentioned "Cougars" had a point. The old ABA team was named Carolina Cougars, and Larry Brown was the coach for a period of time. So the history is there.

Also, the logos could basically remain, not much difference in the 2 cats, minimizing the costs involved.

I agree with "Kelly Tripuka" (great name). Naming the team the "Flight" would be a big mistake. Did we not just learn our lesson about naming a team after it's owner? I know that the "Flight" was a name Bob Johnson was considering even before MJ was in the picture, but that name has got to be taken off the table now that MJ is the owner. MJ, learn from Bob's mistake. Check your ego at the door. Rename the team, but DO NOT name it after yourself.

Dragons is like Raptors, why?

Posted by: fox has to go!! | Mar 1, 2010 10:13:56 AM

The ironic thing is that the Bobcats had finally progressed into decent looking uniforms and logos...I liked the Charlotte Flight since I heard it...The Carolina Cougars is a name of heritage, but it is a bit corny to have a common college nickname for YET another college nickname...It is like trading one 'cat' for another. If the logo is done well with the uniforms I like the Flight monicker ALOT.

People really want the name "Hornets". That's it. Nothing is ever going to feel right. Flight doesn't work because it doesn't really represent CHARLOTTE; neither does renaming the club after the old CAROLINA COUGARS team. The name "Hornets" had historical significance with the city. Unfortunately, there isn't much out there to pick form. That's the problem... If they do a poll and people want to change the nane, I say change it. Then have people send in suggestions. I'm clueless...

i think we should go all bill simmons on them and call them the zombie bobcats.

now with jordan running the show, it really makes sense to change the name to the "flight"

I say we name it the Charlotte Shooters. Ties in with the military, basketball, nightlife. Then they can market every game like a big party. I can see it now "Come watch the Charlotte Shooters play, Drink specials and plenty of shots to go around".

Go with Cougars and have Courtney Cox as our logo.

Oh man...i was thinking this just a few days ago. Bobcats is a lame and weak name. I never liked it or the other choices. If the team needs a new start let's get serious.

Please, get into the playoffs and nobody could care less about the name...A bobcat is a pretty aggressive animal, similar to a panther who everyone seems to like that name...The colors are great, the name fits with the other sports team name....I dont hear a lot of fans even talking about Bob Johnson.....He paid the money to get the team here and he was entitled to name it....What were his choices, Charlotte Bankers?....how would that have played out....

Changing the name would be a very poor decision based on the fact that this franchise needs to develop a history and an identity. We have new uniforms already after only 6 seasons and now the fans that don't even go to the games want to change the name??? Are we saying that Ohio University and other schools around the country have a bad mascot as the "Bobcats"? I think it's just the silly fans of Charlotte who want a name that doesn't remind them of Bob Johnson, but I think Charlotte can get over it.

@ASChin... that's what I was thinking re: the Cougar name.

Although, as a marketing ploy, maybe we could hire women in their 40s and 50s to replace the current Lady Cats...? I feel like there's some potential there.

Why all the hate for Bob Johnson? He only helped bring an NBA team back to Charlotte once your beloved Shinn and the Hornets left you like a lost child!! Bobcats or Wildcats are in the Carolinas so I see nothing wrong with the name. Who wants to be Cougars??or Flight??? We have the Panthers and Bobcats, it is fine. I believe it would not be a problem with the mascot name if the former owner wasn't named Bob Johnson the former owner of BET. Don't forget fans voted for the name they wanted and it ended up being the Bobcats. I feel some of you hold grudges towards this man for the wrong reasons b/c he has done nothing negative to this city but made it better, ex: CIAA, Musical Concerts, Events for children, Religous Forums, Charlotte Checkers, NCAA tournament, these were not here until the new arena was built. How about let's thank the man(Johnson) for trying and welcome the great Micheal Jordan for saving the team so we can have one.

Changing the name at all, in any shape or form would be a very bad idea. This team is finally, after 6 years, gaining ground in the Charlotte fan base. And wait: just because the team was originally named "Bobcats" because of Bob Johnson, we can't keep it? Why?

Ohio University's mascot, as well as other schools across the nation, are the "Bobcats". The actual mascot is not the problem; Bob Johnson was the problem. We don't have to change a small orange cat from being our mascot just because we didn't like the owner.

That's just plain silly logic.

Plus, it's going to be hard to try to have a THIRD mascot name for an NBA team in Charlotte in the same decade. That's ridiculous. Talk about an insecure town that doesn't make up their minds and stick by their team.

KEEP THE BOBCATS!

Lets just propose the hornets and see what happens.

I figure that in the SEC there are 2 different Tigers, in the same division. New Orleans is in the West, we're in the East, so all is good. 2 Hornets!!!!
