The pick owed Bulls is protected

Charlotte Bobcats general manager Rod Higgins just spoke with us about the Tyrus Thomas trade. I asked about the first-round pick they now owe the Chicago Bulls, in addition to the pick they owe the Minnesota Timberwolves (via Denver in the Alexis Ajinca deal).

The earliest the pick could go to Chicago is 2012, since the NBA doesn't allow teams to trade their first-round picks in consecutive years. In addition, there's a sliding scale of lottery protection written into the trade language that starts with the first draft when the Bobcats are eligible to send the pick out.

Higgins didn't go into detail about that protection, but it's good to know that if the Bobcats are still on the bubble between the playoffs and the lottery then, they wouldn't necessarily lose a good pick.

Any chance of you getting some words from Tyrus Rick? Be great to get your take on what sort of kid he is personality wise and how he feels about the trade.

Will he be wearing #24 for us?

Also - I assume he will be suiting up for us against the Cavs tomorrow night?

As a lifelong Bulls fan I am sorry to see Tyrus go. Next to D. Rose, perhaps the most talent on the team, yet couldn't play for either Skiles or DelNegro. No reason he cannot easily drop 17-19 points a night with 10-12 rebounds and 4-5 blocks. If Larry Brown can light a fire under this guy,
it will be a super trade for Charlotte. For Bull's fans, our hope is the free agent market next year. Hope it's not 'pie-in-the-sky' wishful thinking. I look forward to watching Charlotte games because of TT.

Slam -- yes, my story (which hopefully is online soon) includes some Thomas quotes my buddy K.C. Johnson of the Tribune, emailed me
And, yes, both Thomas and Ratliff are expected to play versus the Cavs (and that might be more than cameo appearances, as banged-up as the Bobcats are inside).

Thanks Rick.

Rick, do you think we would be better with Boris or Tyrus starting...either way our bench will now be stronger...even with Flip gone.

Elliot:
Absolutely Boris starting. Boris is a very sound defender who can guard a variety of players. Thomas is a hell of an athlete, but he was sitting behind a rookie. He'll help, but he still has plenty to learn.

I say the Bobcats should just trade every other draft pick from here on out. With MJ running the show, he's much better at swapping talent than drafting prospects.
I'll take Ty Thomas for a 2012 mid-first rounder any day. Great deal.

we have now officially turned jared dudley, brandan wright, adam morrison, and a player to be named into tyrus thomas, stephen jackson, and boris diaw. You gotta feel better about the wright/richardson deal and the morrison deal in the end when you look at it that way.

Rick, I won't argue about whether Thomas should sit or start, but know a few things about the Bulls and his situation: A) Ben Gordon sat behind Chris Duhon as a rookie, B) Aaron Gray actually started a few games over Joakim Noah last year, C) Thabo Sefolosha started over BOTH Ben Gordon and Kirk Hinrich last year, D) Taj Gibson is actually 14 months older than Thomas and has been playing basketball a LOT longer & E) Vinny Del Negro is an absolute boob of a coach.

Good luck with that cancer tyrus, trust me if he doesn't get his way he will have a temper tantrum, and start acting like a 10 year old. And for the bulls don't feel sorry for us, we have Hakim Warrick to take tyrus place, now we have a point guard (a real point guard ) that can spell D Rose. And if u guys want that trash Pargo u can have him for a bag of potato chips a hot dog and soda!
