What about Phil Ford as 49ers coach?

-- I don't pretend to know the subtle issues of what the Charlotte 49ers would want in their next men's basketball coach. But if I were Judy Rose, I'd check out Charlotte Bobcats assistant Phil Ford. Here's why:

It's always going to be a struggle to recruit talent when you're surrounded by the ACC. So it seems like some name recognition and a warm personality would be high on the list of traits you'd want in that job. Ford has both.

I never knew Ford before he joined the Bobcats staff. I find him to be a warm, engaging, honest guy who could sell parents on sending their kids to the 49ers. And if you've worked for Dean Smith and Larry Brown, plenty of basketball has rubbed off on you.

I'm sure there would be some gut reaction from Niner Nation that they'd want no part of a Tar Heel as coach. If that's a deal-breaker, then that's your business. But if that athletic department is going through the hassle of firing Bobby Lutz (a great guy who loved his job and still loves the school), I'd think you'd want to explore every avenue to replace him with the right fit.

-- It's possible Chicago Bulls small forward Luol Deng will miss the rest of the regular season. The way things are going for the Bulls these days (injuries, a particularly tough schedule), they look more and more like the odd-team-out in the race for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Does Phil Ford want to be a Head Coach?
What about Shaver from W&M?

Re: "I'm sure there would be some gut reaction from Niner Nation that they'd want no part of a Tar Heel as coach."...Is really an accurate representation of 'Niner Nation'??

As a UNCC (not Charlotte!) alumnus, I could care less if he's from the UNC tree, if he's the best man for the job.

As for Shaver...he's a UNC guy too, right?

That's good.

I have to keep myself from vomiting at the thought of having a Tar Hole leading our Charlotte 49ers. But seriously, as long as whoever is in charge is taking us deep into the Big Dance, I don't care who our coach is. I just want this team to excel again...

Excellent points about the importance of having name recognition and a warm personality.

Go Niners!

Who would drive him to the games?

To Milkman, Ford has said many times that he hopes to become a HC in the future.

I like Phil and Shaver, I think they would both do a good job, but I want to throw in another name. Jeff Capel. Senior not Junior. Jr would not leave OU for here. but Sr. is a local guy. a bobcat assistant, been a college head coach for years. been to the big dance with ODU and NC A&T. He has good history in D2 with Fayetteville St. He has won everwhere he has been. I was a student at NC A&T, when he lead our team to the dance. The Aggies challenged The Arkansas Razorbacks in 94, well up until the last 5 mins of the game. And he had less talent than what he could get here in Charlotte. Ark. had that 40 mins of hell team under coach Nolan Richardson.

Scuttlebutt is that UNC-W has been wooing Phil already. Better come with a checkbook open.

Why does everyone assume we have to recruit around the poisoned well of the Carolinas? Get a Yankee coach (boo hiss blah blah blah) who can recruit the Rust Belt. Surely those kids want to GTFO and come to a better climate.

How about that Northern Iowa coach???

Someone with head coaching experience is mandatory. There is no time for Ford to learn on the job.
