Positions matter little to Krzyzewski
Mike Krzyzewski doesn't particularly value traditional positions in basketball, and I suspect that approach will come in handy coaching this version of Team USA at the World Championships next month.
Krzyzewski was asked continuously during a media conference call Wednesday about the lack of height on this team. They had some bad luck: David Lee's hand injury, Amare Stoudemire's insurance complication and the after-effect of Brook Lopez's mononucleosis.
That means ex-Charlotte Bobcat Tyson Chandler is the only healthy true center and most everyone might have to play out of position.
But when has that bothered Duke's Hall of Fame coach? I did a magazine article with Krzyzewski years ago, and I asked him why he cares so little for conventional position labels. Krzyzewski answered that if his small forward fouls out, he'd rather put in his next-best player than his next-best small forward, because that next-best small forward might be his fifth-best player not already in the game.
Fast-forward to Wednesday, and Krzyzewski made it clear he won't fret over what he lacks. Instead, he'll put in his best five and hope the other teams have to match up with his odd-ball combinations.
"We don't have (a lot of) big guys...We're not going to pick someone up on a trade or anything like that,'' Kryzyzewski said. "So we're trying to personalize a system to fit the strengths of this group. We're going to have to rely on really good perimeter defense to make sure that we don't get hurt nside.''
That, to an extent, is what Krzyzewski did in the Olympics. LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony played a lot of power forward in those games. That sacrificed a couple of inches of height, but it made the other team's power forward guard a dramatically better athlete.
James and Anthony aren't participating this time, but putting some names to positions, it means Kevin Durant might play some power forward and Lamar Odom plenty of center. The idea is to make the other team adapt to your next-best option, not the other way around.

Could this approach be a viable method for NBA teams (like the Bobcats) to succeed in the regular season? Makes you wonder if the NBA's value on height and size is somewhat misguided?

Redhotdave:
Well, it is what the Bobcats did when they'd go small with Diaw at center, Wallace at 4 and Jackson at 3.
But this works only so long; it's an attempt at making the other team match up with you, not the other way around. So, harkening back to Team USA, it means it works only as well as Odom can play against bigger guys and Durant can screw up a hulking European power forward. And how many 3s Curry makes.

Doesn't it make you feel great when an ex-Bobcat, who never was really on the court, makes the cut and Wallace doesn't? I realize Chandler has the benefit of being at the right position with little competition, but still. I'm just hoping we end up getting more out of that Mavs trade (using Dampier's contract to some benefit) than meets the eye. If Chandler stays healthy, I can see him having a big WC tournament and season in Dallas. It is afterall a contract year. It's a shame he contributed so little in Charlotte. Not what the Cats had in mind after moving Okafor I'm sure.
By the way, given the roster, I don't think this WC will be as big a cakewalk as the past Olympics. Of course, we should still win, but it might not be as easy.

Coach K should pick up Hansbrough. He knows first hand what he can do to the inside of a soft defensive team.
Play your seniors on senior day! Such a lack of class.

A lot of people keep bringing up the example of a hulking European PF that will give Durant and the other forwards problems inside. But who exactly are these forwards? Scola, Nocioni, and Oberto (Argentina)? Splitter, Nene, and Varejao (Brazil)? Tomas (6'8"/209) and Banic (6'9"/249) (Croatia)? Reyes (6'9"/260) and Claver (6'9"/225) (Spain)? Fotsis (6'9"/216) and Tsartsaris (6'10"/212), Printezis (6'9"/230) (Greece)? Nowitzki and Kaman (Germany)? Kristic, Radenovic (6'10"/245), and Velickovic (6'9"/240)? Jankunas (6'9"/245) and Kleiza (Lithuania)?
I'll give you Schortsanitis, and the twin towers of Lithuania Javtokas (6'11"/270) and Lavrinovic (6'11"/265). Otherwise, none of them are physically that imposing. The truth is I think our line-up resembles the stretch 4 that actually originated from the European style of play.

I heard that Coach K loves the Missionary position.

wayne, while your point is dead on, a lot of the guys on that list are not playing this year. argentina especially, i don't think they have any nba players this year. doesn't mean they won't be stellar, just new blood i'm sure. and i thought nowitzki isn't playing either but they have him listed on the roster. thought he said all summer he was taking the summer off....idk.
i just hope the tv coverage is good because as a basketball junkie, i will be recording and watching every game I can. if noah and petrius were playing for france, i'd think they'd go far but I believe they are not.

can we get something new on here Rick? It's been way to long.

Rick,
Is this the team we are going to start the season with? If so, this has to be a very disappointing offseason. We asses future payroll, downgrades at pg, and even sold Chandler at his lowest point when all reports were that he was playing better. Frustrating offseason.

Meant added future payroll, although my grammatical error indicates how I feel.
