Miles, Rogers waived
The Charlotte Bobcats have waived Darius Miles and Matt Rogers, trimming the roster to the NBA maximum 15.
Coach Larry Brown cautioned that it's not yet definite the current 15 would all be on the roster for opening night in Dallas Wednesday. Obviously the team is concerned with the health of reserve point guards Shaun Linvingston and Sherron Collins. Brown had to use Boris Diaw extensively at point guard versus the New Orleans Hornets.
Livingston, who has missed all the exhibitions with left knee pain, said his goal is to play on opening night.
Brown said Miles, a veteran forward making a comeback from a severe knee injury, was caught in a numbers game of too many guaranteed contracts. Brown said he has no doubt Rogers, an undrafted rookie center, will eventually be an NBA player. Rogers could end up in the Developmental League or play in Europe for now

Yawn...even as a Bobcats fan this barely qualifies as news...
Let us know when they cut Gana Diop! LOL

Of course this is news. If your a Bobcats fan you should be happy to be quickly informed of team transactions. Why do so many people have attitudes on here.
Posted by: Paul | Oct 21, 2010 3:11:56 PM
Careful, Paul, that kind of class and civility could get you a bad reputation on this board.

Replying to bobcat terry: "Why do so many people have attitudes on here."
cause they're stupid and loaded with negativity...
Posted by: bob johnson | Oct 21, 2010 3:27:02 PM
Um no....its bc the real fans knew neither of these were going to make the team.
And actually I qualify news as pertinent information on the team and events/transactions that will affect the outcome of a game or season.
Is that better?
Posted by: Bobcat Terry | Oct 21, 2010 3:32:40 PM
If you follow the message board you will see that I in fact post many positive comments/thoughts on the team...where was the negativity in my initial statement?
Stupid? Ha..I won't even qualify that...

What ever happened to Rogers' fantastic move to the basket?
Posted by: Rick Bonn | Oct 21, 2010 3:52:26 PM
Oh, it's there. Larry Brown couldn't have said more nice things about the guy. If they were just picking the best 15, regardless of guarantees, Rogers would be on the team.

I know Michael and Larry know that Danny Green from Carolina was released by Cleveland 2 days ago. Go Get him and put that Dookie on the trading block!

Rick you truly truly crack me up.A pill hard to swallow i know, but you have to swallow it as bitter as it may taste to you.Regardless,ou are still able to share your man crush for Rogers however on this new thing they got called Twitter,Tweeter .....it's apparently blowing up.Get yourself an account.....toodles.
Posted by: BringIt | Oct 21, 2010 5:22:11 PM
yea I was really holding out hope that one of the undesireable guarunteed contracts would get cut.
as for holding out hope there is a veteran out there to scoop up instead of collins.....i believe besides rafer alston there is nobody worth signing that could man the point better than boris.
Posted by: charlottean | Oct 21, 2010 5:29:57 PM
I agree this is definitely news of course. Why would anyone complain about Rick reporting the items of the day? Sure, you'd always prefer a major trade, but still. Anyway, shame they have to give up on Rogers just because of the guaranteed contracts, but I guess that's part of the NBA accounting deal.
Just as Derrick Brown has been the biggest surprise so far, I would have to say it's pretty disappointing that Livingston hasn't been able to get on the court yet. Hope he's ready for opening night, but without any Bobcat game action under his belt, and the pain/injury, it may be quite a while before he can contribute anything significant.
You really do have to appreciate the versatility of Boris Diaw. When you can play the extremes of Center and Point Guard that is pretty amazing. Still, I hope he doesn't have to stray too much from one of the forward spots, or else it will really underscore the lack of depth on this team right now.

Thanks Rick. Very curious to see if anything of note happens before opening night. Having said that, my key preseason observations:
> Derrick Brown (UPS) has played significantly well. Still has much to learn, but he's making great strides. In some moments, it makes you think dealing Crash for a quality starting 5 would be worth the gamble.
> DJ has demonstrated enough improvement to ease the fears at the 1. The other guards (Livingston's knee, Collins rookie and now injury status) are giving us major concern. Why we let Javaris go is beyond me.
> Diaw has more parlor tricks than a rented clown at my 2 year old's birthday party, but I'd still rather have a real POWER forward than a part-time magician.
> Diop showed us he can man some minutes this season. Not great, not even good, but at times just enough to get us by.
> Hendo is a mess. He needs a change of venue, and we need someone who can come off the bench and generate offense (PS - Carroll is NOT that guy!).
> Our depth will be very thin early on. I fear another early hole for our Bobcats to try and climb out of.

Given the history of LB (particularly with this team), even if the 15 on the roster now remain that way on opening night, I don't think the 15 that are on the roster now will be the same 15 that will be on the roster after the trading deadline. It's just a question of when the deal(s) get done. With all of that in mind, Rick, which is more likely: that the Bobcats trade for a proven point guard to either start or provide depth behind DJ, or that the Bobcats simply eat a contract in order to replace it with another (waived, cut, or free-agent) player before opening night?

i say cut livingston, eat the salary, he will never be healthy to play at least 60 games..we will miss felton until we get another pg in a trade.. letting felton go was a mistake without options.
Posted by: bobcats fan | Oct 21, 2010 6:09:50 PM
A-Train:
Given those two -- and only those two -- alternatives, I'd say it's more likely they trade for a point guard than cut a guy with a guarantee. I say that only because this franchise has NEVER been quick to cut someone they owe money, if only because they hold out hope they'll be able to throw a non-performer into a deal somewhere down the road.
Having said that, if they ran across a point guard they really like, what would stop them from cutting Collins (unguaranteed contract) to create a roster spot?
Posted by: Rick Bonnell | Oct 21, 2010 6:14:44 PM
Cut Diop? WOW! that would make a lot of sense...cut a guy who's owed 7 mil a year and get nothing out of it since his salary is guaranteed..real smart bobcat terry

Rick, I admire your patience with the gripers on your blog. I think you do an excellent job. I also think we can definitely get back to the playoffs. I hope we can get an additional point guard and I hope Livingston can get back his health.

Rick,
Do you think a lockout next season is inevitable and will it lead to a loss of some or all of the season?
Posted by: James Reed | Oct 21, 2010 7:04:53 PM
i'm actually on-board for cutting diop because there are guys in the d-league that can contribute more than diop can on a minimum contract. we can't deal diop's contract unless we're taking on an even worse contract which i don't think currently exists in the league unless you're talking about a package for gilbert arenas which would be franchise suicide.
the guy has wasted a roster spot since we acquired him. he's just evidence of how bad our front office has been in managing the payroll. which is worse? paying the 7 million for the guy to wear a suit for 3 years or paying somebody else the minimum on top of that to actually give a deserving guy a job that can contribute.
on the outside shot though, he did have 5 blocks the other night and that used to be a somewhat regular occurrence for him in dallas that led to him getting the big contract. maybe he pulls a nazr and turns up big for us this year but i highly doubt it. he's our 4th option at center once brown gets healthy anyways. we'd be better suited grabbing a veteran point guard if livingston can't go.
Posted by: charlottean | Oct 21, 2010 7:08:26 PM
From what we've seen in preseason, I think we are going to be just fine with DJ as our starting PG. It is troubling however at the lack of depth behind him. I can't help but think the front office has to be second guessing themselves right now about signing Livingston.
I think Diop has also proven through his summer dedication to getting in shape, he can be atleast servicable. There is absolutely no sense at waiving him and eating $20 mil. Perhaps he has experienced a Nazr type career renaissance and contributes this year. It's the best we can hope for.
I think it's a little premature to start saying we should look to trade Crash due to the emergence of Derrick Brown. I'm as big of a fan of Brown's potential as anyone, but let's not get too far ahead of ourselves. Crash is a special player and he should not even be considered in a trade, short of netting us a true superstar, which isn't happening.
As for Boris, he is quite versatile, but way too mistake prone for my liking. If any sensible trade comes our way, we should jump at the chance to move him and just move Thomas into the starting line up.
Having said all of the above, I can't wait for next Wednesday!

OT: Rick and fellow Bobcats fans,
Article floats contraction and I'd assume that (unfairly imo), that the Bobcats would be somewhere near the top of the list.
Posted by: cornchip | Oct 22, 2010 1:22:13 AM
Unfairly? Poor attendance, awful TV ratings, terrible ownership from day one.
Posted by: Michael Procton | Oct 22, 2010 1:59:12 AM
Cornchip:
I want you to think about this in the context of a very nasty labor negotiation:
If you were the owners, asking for huge concessions from the players, and you felt the need to scare them, wouldn't you suggest (whether there's any truth to this at all) that in a worst-case scenario, you just might have to do something drastic THAT WOULD COST A BUNCH OF PLAYER JOBS.
It's called sabre-rattling.
If it ever got to that -- and it won't -- the Bobcats don't make sense, since they now have one of the better, more modern, arenas in the league, plus a very nasty financial penalty if the team were to vacate the arena.
First off, I couldn't see Jordan taking a check from the league to kill the team. If the intent were to contract, the NBA would be looking to buy one or two franchises on the cheap. Jordan has the sense to buy low (he did) and sell high. Second, as I said, much of that money would end up with the city of Charlotte, as a penalty for abandoning the arena. Besides, Jordan likes owning this team.
And finally, I can think of other franchises that would make more sense. Sacramento and Milwaukee are both in outdated arenas. It would make much more sense to off them, since this is a rough time to assemble the funds for a new arena.

Really, it is time for everyone to let Felton go, especially you Rick. He had more than enough time to prove what he could do while with the Bobcats and at the end was average at best. He moved on and now its time for the Carolina nation to move on also (especially you Rick). The Bobcats now have a young, talented pg who, throughout the preseason has shown he is ready to lead and is getting more and more confident everyday.I know Felton has been yall Golden Child since his Tar Heel days and it is widely known the Tar Heel nation look out for there own and defend them til the end but it is time to stop.
DJ is earning the respect of his coaches and teammates and its time for yall to start showing him some also (especially you Rick). You very seldom write anything positive about DJ, maybe because he did not come through the "mighty Tar Heel" sytem and he is running the show now.Out of all the players that have come and gone within the past 2 years you still crying about Felton. Just let it go. This is a new team with a new attitude with a new floor general.Support all the 'cats that are here now and wish the former ones well and MOVE ON!
