Bobcats bringing back Melvin Ely

Charlotte Bobcats player-personnel chief Rod Higgins just confirmed to the Observer that ex-Bobcat Melvin Ely will be signed this afternoon, assuming he passes his physical.

Ely, 6-10 and 260 pounds, will add depth at center and power forward. The Bobcats need center help after free agent Kwame Brown accepted a one-year, $7 million offer from the Golden State Warriors.

Ely played for the Bobcats their first 2 1/2 seasons. In that time he demonstrated a gift for low-post scoring but was not a particularly effective rebounder. He has played for five NBA teams, averaging 5.3 poitns and 3.3 rebounds for his career. He's a .460 shooter all-time in the NBA.

Higgins anticipates Ely being available for Wednesday's afternoon practice.

Well I suppose that's better than relying solely on Boris.

good pick up, i still have his poster on my wall. great guy and hope he can contribute for the bobcats this season.

Posted by: Tyler | Dec 14, 2011 12:50:24 PM

Sounds like a good pick up to me, looks like he enjoyed his time here before, and was quite productive.

Posted by: Justin | Dec 14, 2011 12:54:11 PM

Fits their plan I believe. Another body to man the middle 10-15 minutes a game. We are in a full blown youth movement, need cheap vets and hungry young guys. My only hope for this season is to see growth from our 25 year old and younger players and acquire another draft pick. Might be asking for too much

Worthless team.....

Posted by: DanielTDenny | Dec 14, 2011 1:26:20 PM

Has he played recently? I'm not familiar with him.

Posted by: long | Dec 14, 2011 1:27:43 PM

Melvin's biggest weakness is defense, when our shots are not falling were going to get blown out. I will continue to support the Bobcats, but I need a 50% discount on my season tickets to come to every home game next season.

Posted by: easye | Dec 14, 2011 1:30:13 PM

I like the move. Paul Silas has a way of getting guys to contribute. Ely is a good fit and Silas will work with him on his rebounding. If Bismack can give us some minutes at the 5 spot also, then we may not be that bad off. Still need another guy there though.

Posted by: JMix | Dec 14, 2011 1:32:08 PM

Good pickup I guess for now. I still think we need a true center. But he or she has to be a good rebounder and defender. Diop will take another 2 months to get his 450 down.lol But at least they do get someone to bang down low.

Posted by: tbird | Dec 14, 2011 1:38:20 PM

how do all you idiots think this is a good pick up?? please tell me? i follow the nba closely and i havent heard Ely's name once in the past 3 years.. did we sign him off the street?? just another example of how we have the most depressing roster in nba history..

Posted by: red | Dec 14, 2011 1:39:31 PM

How about getting the Band back together?

Well, Melvin's back,
Jason Kapono is in LaLaLand and playing with Kobe,
Eddie House just re-signed with LeBron and the Heat,
Matt's still here,
Steve Smith and Brevin Knight retired,
GW3 has got a better gig going in RIP City,
Emeka's down in Nahwlins,
Keith Bogans is with the Bulls,

I think the rest of the fellas are out of the league by now.

Hey, wait...someone needs to sign ME!
Hey, Malik Allen hasn't re-upped with the Magic, so the Bobcats can re-sign him

Posted by: Primoz Prezec | Dec 14, 2011 1:42:06 PM

Aside from the idiots comment, Red has it right. This fellow has been off the radar for years, having not even suited up in 09-10 at all. He has been king of the 30 game seasons and 10 minutes a night since 2006. This really is the NBA version of the Bad News Bears.

Posted by: dcpacheco | Dec 14, 2011 1:43:49 PM

Never heard of him. Man, the Bobcats are going to SUCK.

Posted by: Rick | Dec 14, 2011 1:43:52 PM

its a good pickup because it stays the course of rebuilding. Get over it... this team is not going to make any moves to make themselves a playoff contender this season, they will lose lots of games, but they were never going to win a title the way the team was formerly constructed so they've gutted it of long term contracts and gone with a youth movement. They will have a top 5 pick next year and with several players' contracts expiring, they will have a considerable amount of cap room to work with. If you have no patience, this is not the team for you to be a fan of.

Posted by: tmack652 | Dec 14, 2011 1:44:56 PM

So does that mean the orange uniforms are coming back too? ;-)

Hey Red - exactly 1 year ago, every human being not related to him ridiculed the Bobcats for signing Kwame Brown. He was the #1 draft pick that couldn't play worth squat. A year later, he's getting $7 mil from Golden State. Who's to say Silas can't turn Ely into a good player? He was never completely awful while he was here, just had some holes in his game. I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt on this one and see what Silas can do with him.

Posted by: J | Dec 14, 2011 1:45:00 PM

lets call Robert "Tractor" Traylor too and see if he wants to.... oh, wait.... (too soon?)

Posted by: tmack652 | Dec 14, 2011 1:47:19 PM

Red u look like the idiot. U some fairweather chumps. Get basketball for dummies on Amazon. You can clearly see the rebuilding stage for this group, and the expiring contracts after this year after a hopeful high pick. This team has some up and coming stars Hendo, Walker, Biyombo, Tyrus, Augustine. Upcoming years they will be good look at OKC. Just support your team and stop crying if not get off the bus and walk.......fair weather. Is it sunny or is it a bad storm.!!! wow

Dude...NOT FUNNY! He died on May 11!!

Posted by: Primoz Brezec | Dec 14, 2011 1:56:52 PM

There is something wrong with alot of you. Some of you so called "fans" need to realize this team is rebuilding, and is the middle of a severe youth movement. They will be trying to shed contracts for cap space while building through the draft. What part of that do some of you now understand?

Posted by: Jason Warren | Dec 14, 2011 1:57:01 PM

BWAHAHAHAHAHA! First, go to College! A Lot = 2 two words, redneck!

Second, build through the draft?

2. Emeka
3. Adam Morrison
5. Raymond Felton
8. Brandan Wright
9. D.J.
9. Kemba
12. Gerald Henderson
13. Sean May
19. Tobias Harris
20. Alexis Ajinca
22. Jared Dudley

I'm not going to even bother with the 2nd Round Picks.
Yeah, let's build through the draft!

Posted by: Primoz Brezec | Dec 14, 2011 2:03:36 PM

Your so bright Primo....NOT. Charlotte has been a revolving door since they became a franchise. At least we have a plan now with young guys and hopefully a top draft pick next year. we just gotta get through this year and a couple more but when ur a small market team all u can do is hope to draft a diamond and win a championship before that preson leaves to go to LA or NY

Posted by: Actual Real Fan | Dec 14, 2011 2:25:03 PM

I think the Bobcats are making some good moves. I wish Marc Gasol was a FA next summer instead of this one - since we will have ~14 million to spend on FA next summer. I am thinking they make a move on somebody at around 10 million which will leave some wiggle room for other FAs and signing whoever they draft in the top ten of 2012. Fans - let's support this team and let them gel this season and then they can add two huge peices to the puzzle next summer.

Any news on the Bobcats and Reggie Williams?

Posted by: RobC | Dec 14, 2011 2:43:18 PM

Any news on the 7 foot kid in training camp last year? All camp they talked about him being a Tom Chambers type leaper then he got cut. Why not take a chance he's only 22. Or I hate to say it Ajinca could play for a few minutes, he's athletic for a 7 footer even though he suxs.

Posted by: Larry | Dec 14, 2011 2:50:00 PM

J has is exactly right.

That Primo clown ripped the Brown signing last year and now is mad that we let him go. Here is hoping the same things happens with Ely so this guy can look like an idiot again.

Posted by: Super | Dec 14, 2011 2:52:17 PM

Rick, what's the latest on the cats getting Reggie Williams?

Posted by: apauldds | Dec 14, 2011 2:56:44 PM

i know he died in march. that was part of the joke. it was SUPPOSED to be in bad taste...

Posted by: tmack652 | Dec 14, 2011 2:57:15 PM

Melvin will be a boon to strip clubs and diamonds direct and gun dealers. especially when he goes to see the girls and loses his jewelry. Maybe Silas, an NBA legend and awesome NBA coach, can make something of him. In the meantime, I feel for Paul with this roster...the dude deserves more.

Posted by: Mis Okafor | Dec 14, 2011 3:00:58 PM

"Your so bright Primo....NOT"

BWAHAHAHA! It's You are, not your! What a dumbazz redneck! That's one thing I do not miss down in Charlotte.

Yeah, you have a plan...it's called the NBA Developmental Team plan. You keep gaining high draft choices; some work out and the majority do NOT.Next, once the player has reached their 4th season, the Bobcats can look to trade the said player...so they can gain more draft choices.

That is a GREAT Plan! Your last Christmas present, the frontal lobotomy, is a keepsake!

Posted by: Primoz Brezec | Dec 14, 2011 3:14:28 PM

Primo. Does the fact that everyone thinks your an idiot bother you? Or have you convinced yourself that everyone else is wrong? If you have, your diagnosis as delusional is complete. Enjoy your meds.

Posted by: Super | Dec 14, 2011 3:38:14 PM

Hey Super, does that fact that everyone KNOWS you are a PHRUCKING IDIOT Bother you?

You always have the smallest weenie, yet still have the biggest mouth. You have no plan, except to go to church and pray. You probably think the Bobcats are going to, someday, be in the NBA Finals. Do still search for gold at the local mines, too? How's that lottery ticket thing working out for you?

Look, little wiener, you don't have a clue about constructing a NBA Championship team and you never grew up ROOTING for a NBA Championship team. Get a clue, tiny peter, I did. Bad Boys, Bad Boys!

Don't even bring it here, little wiener, unless you want me to absolutely school you in how to build a winning franchise. Trust me, it's not here in Charlotte.

Posted by: Primoz Brezec | Dec 14, 2011 3:49:57 PM

Thanks for provig my point. Well done. Well done indeed Primo. Probably too delusional to realize what you did, but thats OK. Anyone else reading this knows.

Posted by: Super | Dec 14, 2011 4:23:36 PM

Geeze...I remember Ely from way back when he actually played in the NBA...long ago. This is the BEST we could do? What a joke. It confirms we are tanking this season, which would be fine with me if it automatically coresponded to the 1st pick, but the lottery has a strange way of thwarting that strategy. So no atempt to sign Fresenko...no attempt to trade for someone...just dial rent a wreck to fix our gap. Pathetic.

Any way to block this Juvenile??

Your right Primo, I don't have a very big member, but that doesn't mean you have to make fun of me. First my girlfriends, now you.
I still like watching basketball and I just wanna see my Bobcats win alot. Allso you don't half to make fun of the way I spell either. So what if I am a product of CMS.

Go Bobcats...were goin to the playoffs!

Posted by: Super | Dec 14, 2011 5:08:44 PM

You are right Super. I am a complete moron. Very low IQ. I hang out here all day because no one will talk to me. I am a born hater with nothing to offer society. Thank you for pointing out that I am delusional. I will go away now and not post any more becasue my comments are worthless and I know zero about hoops.

Posted by: Primoz Brezec | Dec 14, 2011 5:48:26 PM

That's okay Primo...you certainly didn't have to remind me about my SHORTCOMINGS between my legs. It's a hereditary thing. Allso none of us can spell wirth a lick. They say its because were inbreads, whatever that means. Primo I just know that I havent an idear about what makes a basketball team plum good. Yur pretty smart and not from these here parts. I sure do wish you wuz back on the Bobcats.

Posted by: Super | Dec 14, 2011 6:01:47 PM

Why thank you, Super. If the Bobcats do learn to draft properly AND if they can ever find an Owner who can afford to put a Championship team on the floor, Charlotte may one day have a chance at the Finals.

Posted by: Primoz Brezec | Dec 14, 2011 6:04:58 PM

Thanks Super. I am glad you understand. Anyone who talks about spelling on blogs and comment pages are really the dumbest people in the world. To think that in some way makes them feel intelligent is laughable. But too each his own. I am going to another blog now to post a stupid hateful comment. I really enjoy doing that.

Posted by: Primo Brezec | Dec 14, 2011 6:08:35 PM

somebody name a championship team that didn't build through the draft.

we didn't draft poorly, we failed to develop the talent we drafted. poor coaching and management does that. when you draft adam morrison to a team with gerald wallace in his prime, how do you think that will work out? imagine if derrick rose got drafted to the pheonix suns or utah jazz. now take away their coaches and put sam vincent in there and then replace him with larry brown. good luck developing young talent with either.

as for melvin ely.......this is sadly probably the best we could do right now. but it makes zero sense to give any minutes to melvin ely. having him on the roster for depth and or fouls makes sense but if he actually plays........horrible. should have signed some d-leaguer who actually still stands to improve.

Posted by: charlottean | Dec 14, 2011 6:11:45 PM

This is great. Primo finally realized what a moron he is. What a great day for Charlotte. How did this happen?

Posted by: Special K | Dec 14, 2011 6:15:33 PM

stupid fucking move

Posted by: James | Dec 14, 2011 6:33:08 PM

Reggie Williams tweeted 8 minutes ago Rw 55 Charlotte Bocats. I guess that means we got him.

Posted by: Jerry | Dec 14, 2011 6:34:36 PM

Melvin Ely? Was Jake Voschul not available! This one is for long suffering Charlotte basketball fans! What! Stuart Gray was not available! Stuart Gray was so bad you can never forget him if you saw him play! Bring back Muggsy and let him play center holding a broom stick!

Posted by: joe cool | Dec 14, 2011 7:37:37 PM

love the comments here! i found myplace on this world.. LOL - dont know about the move. is it bad or good. But one thing is certain, the guys is unknown.

Posted by: arky | Dec 14, 2011 7:52:42 PM

Hell, at this point get Kenny Gattison to come out of retirement. The Gat Man at 50 would be better than any center we have on the roster at this point.

Posted by: Phil | Dec 14, 2011 9:22:44 PM

I kind of like Melvin, I remember him well from the 'Cats first seasons, but...
This is just a stopgap move for the short term.

Still, they could've done better. If you go for a low cost veteran, Elson is bigger and a better defender than Ely; he's less good offensively, but I think a defensive center was what we needed.
Then, why not try a younger player who has some upside, at least to be a good back-up center for years to come: Fesenko, or Jason Smith, or Brian Butch.

It's like making a statement: yeah, we know we needed a center, but, we also wanna make sure we're staying in the race for a top 5 lottery pick...

Posted by: Sandy | Dec 14, 2011 9:52:00 PM

the team is shifting to full gear offense rather than defensive stops. they are goin to hit the open court. thats y ely is in the roster. it make more sense. Bobcats going to be in a tight rope, again.

Posted by: arky | Dec 14, 2011 10:07:37 PM

I won't argue the point you're making Arky, but there's also a flip side to this coin. Paul Silas always valued strong defense, and being weak in the middle at the defensive end can lead to many easy baskets for the opponents, which is frustrating and discouraging when you're running your offense.
Also, a fast paced offense needs to be started with good defensive rebounding or steals. I mean, if you don't wanna lose most of the games when you score 100 points or more, you need to take care of the defense. Diop will do that ... when he'll get in better shape. Biyombo will do that, when he'll be a Bobcat, and nobody knows yet when that will be.

Posted by: Sandy | Dec 14, 2011 10:26:57 PM

To anyone that gets on here just to talk trash or leave hateful comments, please go away! If that's all you're here to do, then go find another site not related to Charlotte sports franchises to post on. It's petty and quite sad that you must waste your life away posting negative comments constantly.

To all the real fans, thanks for posting great comments and actually having good debates about the team. We all know the Bobcats are in rebuilding mode, so we'll stick it out till the end. I have plenty of faith in MJ and coach Silas to turn this team around! And the future looks bright with Kemba Walker and Bismack Biyombo joining the team this season! Go Bobcats!
