Bobcats' Tyrus Thomas on feeling ignored

Charlotte Bobcats forward Tyrus Thomas doesn’t appreciate the cold-shoulder he feels from the national media this preseason. That has him extra fired up to play basketball.

“My drive is because of the fact every other team is getting mentioned right now, whether it's their blockbuster trade or how good they’ll be,'' Thomas told the Observer Monday. "So I know we have to come in and work. My drive right now is to be mentioned. It just disgusts me when you watch ESPN, and out of the 30 teams you’re not mentioned.

“I think a lot of our guys have that chip on their shoulders. Just to show we’re in the league, too, you know?’’

Winning is necessary to be relevant on a national basis.

I hope the Bobcats play with a chip on their shoulders. That can go a long way.

Right on TT! Too many NBA players would dismiss their small market team - rather than fighting for it. Glad to have TT on the team!!

Posted by: on and on | Dec 12, 2011 3:15:25 PM

they aren't talking about us because there are no transactions taking place. we already have most of our roster in place so there's no free agency flurry. we have 11 guys signed without counting biyombo or kwame or cunningham. the teams they are talking about a lot have like 5 guys signed.

they aren't talking much about minnesota either and they have the number 2 pick coming in along with ricky rubio and rick adelman.

not talking about pheonix much. not talking about toronto much. not talking about detroit. cleveland? sacramento? utah?

they should stop watching espn and start watching game tape and practicing. we actually have our roster mostly formed so we should take advantage of being able to practice more as a unit (sans kwame) than most teams.

I am sorry but the last time Thomas did anything was in the NCAA's....

Posted by: Scott | Dec 12, 2011 3:45:50 PM

Best thing I have heard all year in regards to the NBA. Get mad TT! Let's make some noise

Posted by: bdubb | Dec 12, 2011 3:48:23 PM

Bobcat's entire roster is abunch of role players. Guys that would ride the bench on almost every other team in the NBA. Why would they talk about them??

Posted by: panthers87 | Dec 12, 2011 4:00:35 PM

How about staying healthy for a season ?

Posted by: jwalk | Dec 12, 2011 4:01:49 PM

you folks that post the negative comments that offer no insight what so ever other than your ignorant opinions... was it worth the minute you wasted to post these little diatribes?? you'll never get that minute back. NEVER.

Posted by: tmack652 | Dec 12, 2011 4:27:37 PM

Winning cures everything.. Tyrus should know that.

Posted by: Jason Warren | Dec 12, 2011 4:41:33 PM

***Someone email this trade info to Higgins and Bobcats will make the news and having money to go after someone big in free agency next year. Trade: Boris Diaw & DJ Augstine for Boston Chris Wilcox (Expiring contract/or offer a mid level contract), Jermaine O'Neal (expiring contract/a Center for the team) Marques Daniels (a good guy off the bench) rights to there 2011 drafted players E'tuwan Moore SG and JaJuan Johnson PF and myabe a future first round pick and or the next 3 year 2nd round pick from boston ... This will free up $$$ for the bobcats

Posted by: Dakingnc | Dec 12, 2011 4:42:32 PM

Don't just get mentioned, win. I'm sure that's what he meant. Hope he channels that fire in his belly into something productive. he can get a little wild in games sometimes.

Posted by: long | Dec 12, 2011 4:48:06 PM

well in truth there not talking about basketball that much on espn as a whole, too much tim tebow and football coverage

Posted by: Cal | Dec 12, 2011 4:58:59 PM

Oh yeah, well you just wait until the Kitty-Cats become "major players" in free agency. (snicker)

Folks, Jordan has neither the money nor the cache to bring the big names here. Therefore, what you see (an average roster) is what you're gonna get. I hate it too, because I'd love to see a great franchise here. Unfortunately, as long as MJ is in charge it's not going to happen.

Posted by: TP | Dec 12, 2011 5:07:18 PM

Dakingnc, LOL....they would be talking alright! You think you are going to get 5 players and picks for basically Augustine? Diaw is lazy! This isn't fantasy basketball dude. Boston can use those expiring contracts on a real player to make another run at the title. Difference between Boston and Charlotte?? Boston WINS championships, Charlotte hopes to have a shot at one this century.

Posted by: DaveT | Dec 12, 2011 5:13:45 PM

@DaveT I didn't break it down enough in words, not saying give up a first rounder and those 2nd rounders together, was saying Bobcats can ask for a future first but would be unlikely, or ask for there next 2 to 3 years 2nd round picks. You right about the winning championships, but yea boston would give up those players for boris diaw and dj augstine. If Bobcats would offer that trade right know with free agency in process they would accept it. With Boston getting D.J. Augstine they would trade rondo immediately for a SG or a C, and even might try to get in the mix and offer Marc Gasol, or Deandre Jordan, or Nene while free agency are in process. ***Hey I'm just saying they need to make some moves, Bobcats have already got rid of everybody felton, wallace, jax, chandler, why not get rid of diaw and dj during this time, get the opportunity to have the first pick in the NBA draft and draft Andre Drummond or Harrison Barnes, depending on which way they are trying to build. I say Harrison Barnes due to his ability, but Drummond is a monster but will he be in the NBA immediately?

Posted by: Dakingnc | Dec 12, 2011 6:30:46 PM

Augustin* Augustin* Augustin*

Posted by: Jason Warren | Dec 12, 2011 8:44:01 PM

Jordan doesn't have cache? Might be the dumbest comment ever. A billion dollars in sales based on his image alone would tell a different story, that is just plain ignorant.

Posted by: Cranky | Dec 12, 2011 10:57:31 PM

TP
Why are you in mj's pocket? How do you know what mj can afford? The cats are bulding the right way. Small market teams do not attract stars now. Money is no more the issue with revenue sharing. The cats will get about $20 million from the league every year.

Posted by: crymeariver | Dec 12, 2011 11:43:05 PM

Let me just state this before I blow up. Harrison Barnes is a bust waiting to happen. As a college basketball player he is overrated and I would not take him. If the Bobcats pick him it will be another UNC player on our team who will be a bust. EXCLAMATION POINTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not period.

Posted by: Garrett | Dec 13, 2011 12:52:37 AM

@Garrett Harrison isn't a bust... he's probably the only player in the first round that is NBA ready, body size and mentally. Carolina runs a system and he's playing in Roy Williams system. What make a player great in basketball isn't just playing the game, it's knowing the game mentally and that separates the greats, Harrison Barnes will be the next greatest player to play the game of basketball as a guard/forward in the NBA. If you would have the opportunity to see him at the NC ProAm were he's playing the ProStyle game and against all the Pro players you would differ that statement and exclamation marks!!!!

Posted by: Dakingnc | Dec 13, 2011 4:36:08 AM

saying barnes is going to be a bust is like saying hansbrough is a bust. you can say it if it makes you feel better but it's just not true and makes it look as though you don't know what "bust" means. like you're trying to say it as a compliment or something.

and daking......your trade proposal is ridiculous. boston was trading rondo for paul. they aren't going to turn around and give up rondo for augustin. and that's not that much of a knock on augustin, i'm sure they would love to have him as a backup but they need a pass first pg with their current roster. and they are trying to stack the deck for one last championship run before garnett and allen's deals expire. it's going to be awkward in beantown next summer.

Posted by: charlottean | Dec 13, 2011 9:18:26 AM

As I said Daking, based on the hype Harrison is getting he will be a bust waiting to happen.

Harrison has had a solid season and career in college but he has far from lived up to the hype that has been heaped on him. There to me are players with less hype who will be as good or better than Harrison Barnes.

I am a NC Tarheel fan but I don't see Harrison as anything special. He will not be a bad NBA player but based on the hype and where he will be taken he will struggle to live up to it and be deemed a bust by many. He will not get the respect he deserves for what he does accomplish in the NBA.

If people think taking Harrison in the top five is a good deal than they are soon to be disappointed if he winds up on their team. I hope I am wrong because I like when a Tarheel kicks ass in the NBA.

Those that have the gold make the rules, and get the attention.

Air Minimum don't have no gold.

Posted by: George Hanson | Dec 13, 2011 12:35:40 PM

hey Tyrus ur still in the league? your moody A$$ couldnt even play with D-rose..... you didnt even talk to the media alot of times !!
you didnt even show no fans no love so why should anyone -media-fans or other wise care about you on the bobcats-

Posted by: urStillindaleague | Dec 13, 2011 12:54:29 PM

barnes will not be a bust. he will be jamal mashburn with knees.

Posted by: charlottean | Dec 13, 2011 1:25:38 PM

Id compare Barnes to a lesser version of a Danny Granger. There are going to be plenty of players in the upcoming draft whom are ready physically. Skill wise, and maturity wise? Not so much. Time to swing for the fences, though.

Posted by: Jason Warren | Dec 13, 2011 3:14:03 PM

somebody keeps deleting my comments but fuck it im still gonna keep writing comment you can kiss my ass too. the bobcats are nothing but bullshit.

Posted by: James | Dec 13, 2011 3:48:10 PM

i am sure as hell not excited about this season.

Posted by: James | Dec 13, 2011 3:58:31 PM

i see they dont like when people speak the truth lmao

Posted by: James | Dec 13, 2011 4:02:51 PM

I have no idea why no one is talking about the Bobcats? Their commitment to mediocrity should be the first story on sportscenter. They have brought no one new in outside of the draft & there is a lot of doubt whether Biombo ever plays in the NBA. Their crappy center that can't catch a cold in Antarctica just signed elsewhere. They bring back a below average team and don't try to sign anyone that can actually play but I guess they need some love from the media? Please Tyrus Thomas. They should have tried to sign David West. He played high school ball in NC & might be willing to play here. They need someone who can score. Go get one good player and maybe you will get some love. Until then just shut up and play good if you want props.

Posted by: Smiley | Dec 13, 2011 9:10:59 PM

the cats are re-building. they are looking for their franchise player to start from. their go to guy. Any of those guys in the rooster could be one. We just dont know. Time can only tell. I am betting that walker wil be the next isiah thomas and kmeba the next olujawon. Long shot??? U bet. but i love this game that i want to keep my head above reality. But who knows. the ball is round and so is the world. anythin can happen. If DJ is to be in the trading table i would like to suggest the hawks. They are in need of a PG. a real one. And get josh powell for the Center position. Not much but its better than diaw in center position.

Posted by: arky | Dec 14, 2011 1:48:59 AM

Arky, rebuilding from what? As far as I can tell nothing was ever built. The term "rebuilding" implies that something complete once existed. As far as I can tell this has never been the case with the Bobcats.

Posted by: George Hanson | Dec 14, 2011 9:00:49 AM

Well, i wouldn't say nothing is done because in reality the two athletics players( tyrus and Gerald)is the foundation along with two draft picks in ( Kemba and Bismack).

Now we just got a dead on 3 point specialist in Reggie Williams. Any further question

Guys believe in our team

let the cats rise to the throne

Posted by: Vinh | Dec 17, 2011 1:37:24 AM

You people bitching about the lack of real moves this season have no earthly idea what rebuilding means. The team is not looking to win in the short term. They are looking to build through the draft first and foremost and then if they do well in the draft they may go after a high profile free agent and add a few solid role players.

As far a Bismack Biyombo goes I do not think taking a flier on him was a bad decision. He is extremely young and raw and there is no telling where his ceiling is. Ajinca was a flop but he also was worth taking a chance on when we did so with him.

For the most part the core of our Bobcats team is young and with two early to mid first round draft picks this season we could take a chance on a guy like Bismack.

Yes there are some serious holes on this team but I do not care. I want our Bobcats to compete but I do not expect them to win many games. All the better. This next draft class is the deepest there has been in quite some time. With a chance at the #1 pick I will look happily toward 2013-2014 when we should see how our draft picks pan out.
