Bobcats won't match Dante Cunningham offer

The Charlotte Bobcats have decided not to match the Memphis Grizzlies' offer sheet to restricted free agent forward Dante Cunningham, player personnel chief Rod Higgins told the Observer this morning.

Matching Memphis' offer sheet would have obligated the Bobcats to more than $4 million in guaranteed money total this season and next.

It is still possible the Bobcats could  look into other alternatives at the wing positions as they work toward the 15-man regular-season roster.

More to come later.

Pick up Pietrus.

too late, he maybe going to Boston

Not a surprise. Why spend any extra money this year? It is all about 2013-2014 for this franchise.

Posted by: DH | Dec 23, 2011 12:00:13 PM

Not a surprise. There is no dedication to winning here, just saving money.

Posted by: Ron | Dec 23, 2011 12:15:52 PM

They are saving money to build a winner. Instead of picking up everything they see. Saving for something worthwhile. Hopefully it will be worth it in the end.

It took them 2 days to make this decision? I call BS! They could have done this Wednesday, because they always knew what the answer was.

Posted by: Digal704 | Dec 23, 2011 12:23:04 PM

bring adam morrison back!!

Posted by: 336nda704 | Dec 23, 2011 12:24:01 PM

And making the decision immediately was important because...

Posted by: Mike | Dec 23, 2011 1:08:21 PM

they really should bring morrison back. i would much rather have him getting the shots than maggette and there's no question he could put up the same points offensively. give maggette to the lakers or jazz or someone else with a large trade exception. morrison would thrive with this team right now. no gerald wallace, no larry brown, no pressure.

the thing is...if i'm cunningham, i'd rather go to memphis and be in the rotation on a playoff team. if we made the decision based on THAT, i'm good with it. especially having derrick brown back and playing way better than he ever has. remember darrell arthur is out for the season. cunningham will get 15-20 minutes every night easy.

but if they decide to pay melvin ely the vet. minimum and NOT pay cunningham 2 million a year for 2 years. I have a problem. as of right now, it looks like we're 25th in the league in payroll.

i'm all good with jordan being fiscally responsible for the first time in bobcats history but if that was the plan......why the eff would you pay reggie williams to miss half the season?!

cunningham is better than white and brown RIGHT NOW but doesn't really have the upside those 2 have so I'm good with him being the odd man out so to speak. but it just seems like a no-brainer to sign the guy and then if it looks like he's not going to be in the long term plans...you trade him. there are several teams under the cap that could take him for nothing in return. you could grab a 2nd round draft pick or 2. I mean just letting guys go like him and kwame and not doing sign and trades or signing and waiting until march to move them just strikes me as poor asset management.

the object of the game is to stockpile small pieces that we can turn into big pieces. we're just giving away a lot of small pieces.

cut ely and or najera. bring morrison back. move maggette, give morrison and brown maggette's minutes and shots. result is the same IF NOT BETTER for the long term good of the franchise. either you get a franchise scorer in morrison or you get a franchise scorer in harrison barnes. it's a win-win. and the fans would love it.

If the city wont suppot the team, even if they went winless for 5 years, they will never have a chance. Complaining about a team and not buying tickets because they are bad its foolish. Im from Charlotte originally and hate to say it but, they need to move. A team cant go bankrupt with salaries just to please the idiots who want big things but wont buy tickets.

Posted by: Ryan | Dec 23, 2011 2:23:19 PM

You guys are getting way too worked up over this guy. Guys like him grow on trees in the NBA and there is no reason to pay him 2 mil a year. Memphis is desperate for a little size because they lost Arthur for the year, so they are overpaying for it and tacked on the second year to make sure we didnt match.

Posted by: Gary | Dec 23, 2011 3:00:08 PM

i agree gary. the only difference i see is......i'd rather give cunningham the 2 million than ely the 1. if they cut ely also....fine. and if 2 million a year is overpaying for cunningham, what is 2.5 for reggie williams since he's gonna miss a huge chunk of a shortened season? 8 for thomas? 7 for diop? 2.6 for najera? 4 for carroll?

it just seems backwards. you sign the guy and then trade him. the guy has plenty of value to contenders especially once somebody else gets hurt.

they need to sign morrison. corey maggette's mom would tell them they need to sign morrison and play him over maggette.

Wow, seems the same idiots on this site everytime I log on. As a transplant, who just moved to Charlotte 5 years ago, I go to every game win or loose and cheer the team. That's what people in real sports cities do. Seems the fans cheering with me at the games aren't the same ones who comment on the CO...just the guys who love to complain. As for my time, I find it much easier to yell Go Cats!

Posted by: Stacy | Dec 23, 2011 3:48:34 PM

I knew that I said it earlier, there is not commitment to winning here just Michael Jordan big EGO saying I got a basketball team and getting. players for 1 mill of less and everbody else 3th strain players. WE WILL BE BOTTOM FEEDERS AS LONG AS MICHAEL JORDAN OWN THIS TEAM. I was a big fan of the Bobcats but not anymore, l can see they handwriting on the wall.

Posted by: TWC | Dec 23, 2011 4:55:05 PM

I go to every game, but most of the complainers her probably have ever been to a game.

Posted by: mikey | Dec 23, 2011 5:35:05 PM

I'd like to have a dirt cheap Adam Morrison back for another try with a healed ACL and no Larry Brown around. That would be a great story and a chance at redemption sort of like Kwame. BUT, the best I'd realistically expect from Ammo would be as a bench scorer who runs off of screens and plays set for him. He still hasn't proven he can consistently make buckets night in and night out in the league. I'd love to give him the chance to prove himself while we are in "just lose and develop young players" mode....

Posted by: DeLaQuest | Dec 23, 2011 6:05:30 PM

Silas would be a perfect coach for Morrison.

Posted by: DeLaQuest | Dec 23, 2011 6:24:17 PM

With Michael Jordan as owner we can change the name to the Charlotte Bottom Feeders

Posted by: TWC | Dec 23, 2011 8:47:11 PM

that argument is BS about people complaining not being true fans. i guarantee i've been to more bobcats games and watched more on tv than just about anybody. i've been to away games at madison square garden and out in atlanta. i haven't missed a game since tivo came outĀ©jadakiss. bobcats fans have plenty reason to complain. we have had the absolute WORST run front office since inception until now.

now, we are starting to make somewhat logical moves but we question everything because for 7 years we have had reason to question everything. and not signing cunningham, but bringing in moon & nachbar for workouts is just idiotic. it falls right in line with what has caused fans to complain over the years.

but i guarantee i'm one of the loudest out in TWC where people hardly make any noise at all. and the team is way more to blame for that than anybody. that's like the comedian blaming the crowd for not laughing at their jokes.

they need to bring back morrison. and give away upper level tickets until the arena is full every single night. it doesn't take much of a brainiac to realize that a full arena makes more money than a third full arena. merchandising, concessions, tv ratings, marketing, and later........higher (much higher) ticket prices.

they never built the fanbase. they thought they could piggyback on the hornets fanbase without actually tapping into it and earning it.

we have reasons to complain.

and they need to bring back morrison.

The Charlotte Bottom Feeders

Posted by: TWC | Dec 23, 2011 10:24:37 PM

Man...so much HATE for this team...WHY do you guys deserve a NBA team in this city? From all these negative talk, MJ and Co. should take there team elsewhere...seriously! It's a privilege to have a NBA team in any city, yet you all just assume it's a given here. You want to know why the Bobcats have a sorry team? Look at yourselves first...want it NOW and only now and can't see the future. Idiots!!

You want to know why the 'Cats waited til the last minute to NOT match Cunningham? It's because they want to SEE what may become available, and we found out today that Mickael Pietrus has been waived and is willing to sign with BOS for league minimum. Guess what? Bobcats offer slightly more, give him a starting role with Silas, and I'm pretty certain he will sign here. THAT became available this morning...so if you fool don't understand WHY they waited til the last minute, it's because THEY CAN and want assurance there was a better choice elsewhere, which in Pietrus, there is!

Why pay someone $2mil per season when you have Pietrus, who is more experienced, plays better defense, can be a better scorer willing to accept less! Smart move by the Bobcats...yet none of you fools can see this.

Why don't all you crybabies turn in your season tickets so that DESERVING fans can cheer this team on. I'll be laughing when the day comes we pull a FA coup like the Clippers and all of you bandwagon fans who have NOTHING better to do than complain try to repurchase season tickets only to find out they're sold out or you have to pay a 500% premium.

Do the Bobcats a favor, if you can't support this team, don't come to the game Monday night. We DON'T want or need you!

Posted by: KYL | Dec 24, 2011 2:50:33 AM

we don't hate the team. we hate rod higgins. we hope cho is doing a better job but supposedly he answers to higgins and higgins and or jordan are the problem with all the mismanagement we've witnessed.

that and peitrus is not available for the minimum to US. he's signing with the celtics barring a waiver claim. and cunningham is every bit the hooper than peitrus is, but younger.

you are confusing this all with people not supporting the team. the people on here HEAVILY support the team. we might be the only ones cheering at the games and watching the road games at home. you have that backwards.

Posted by: charlottean | Dec 24, 2011 4:42:24 PM

Pietrus is a an accopmlished vet who has gone deep into the playoffs. Why would he even think about signing with a rebuilding youth movement. He wants a shot at the elusive championship, not a mentoring job. I believe the reason they waited 2 days to for the Cunningham decision was to give it some thought. Then at the end of the second day decided it wasn't in their best interest. No way does Higgins bring in his son if he doesn't think his son has a chance. Our front office is not as dumb as some of you think they are.

"Dumb people tend to think everyone else is dumb."

please explain the dampier trade if rod higgins is not an absolute idiot. or if you want an easier one.....explain trading matt carroll for gana diop.

if the explanation is not "mark cuban was blackmailing rod higgins because he has pictures of rod higgins committing heinous criminal acts" then you know our front office is or was absolutely as dumb as everyone thought.

there's just no justification.

and the higgins signing is just poorly timed. i feel bad for the kid. he doesn't stand a chance. at least in some other cases like ewing or karl their dads were at least liked or respected. the kid is going to get nothing by resentment.

Anybody saying they want Adam Morrison back, I no longer value your opinion. He should only come back to sell Hot Dogs....
