Scrambling for answers

Charlotte Bobcats coach Paul Silas announced two new starters versus the Indiana Pacers tonight -- Gana Diop at center and Tyrus Thomas at small forward.

Those decisions don't automatically affect who might start against the New York Knicks Monday. Particularly in the case of Diop, it's a surgical choice, based on the opponent.

Sometimes Diop won't play at all. Sometimes he'll get a start or considerable minutes, because his size and bulk might be helpful versus a particular center. The Pacers have a big guy in Roy Hibbert, so Silas figured this was worth a look.

Thomas starting at small forward is a little different, in that it gets one of the Bobcats' best athletes his minutes. Boris Diaw (best at power forward) has to start somewhere -- he's by far this team's most skilled and versatile player. Thomas has told the coaches he can handle guarding small forwards. Danny Granger should be quite a test of that, and Carmelo Anthony more so on Monday.

Silas is either a genius or has completely lost it. I guess we will no soon enough.

The bobcats are playing for a top 3 pick.

Posted by: Let's face it folks | Jan 7, 2012 7:05:35 PM

The team gave up after losing the lead.

I love the bobcats, however I appreciate if we lose every game is good for us, but I don't know... there is more than getting a great pick! The Purist that probably alot of us are understand, however most don't!

I am not debating this DIAW is an all around could be great PLAYER, but unless we can fill the stands with SOME French people we get half of a player, even if half is almost as good as a willing player!

To watch a good man like Silas feel like he is Failing!!!!! Silas would not answer any questions about Diaw, I have seen ENOUGH OF DIAW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BRING HIM IN OFF THE BENCH, NOW!!!!!!!!!!! I watched Diaw last night, had a shot and pinned Mullens in on the baseline and did not even kick out(run out) for Mullens to pass to, HORSE SH!!

I could care less what the shooting percentage was 2nd half(of this game Pacers), Diaw relieves that pressure, I don't care how many picks he sets, "D" he plays. Diaw is a MASS OF TALENT, I WOULD RATHER TakE MY CHANCES!!!!

Lets check with Diaw and show him the schedule and see when he wants to START and PLAY!

Diaw plays for the French National Team! The Bobcats come second for him! I love Coach Silas, but he is getting too old for this! I think he stopped caring when they traded Wallace!

Man, Silas got pissed with this team lack of concentration. He wants them to do one thing but do the opposite.where is the teamwork? Huh?. I had enough of this team too because we expect them to win most or many against mediocre team such as the Cavs or Pacers. I don't take anything from Orlando or Miami but come on.Well, i guess players these days don't want to work for the win but just dreaming about talent coming in.

DJ augustin nice jobs by carrying the team. You did all coaches could ask for in a 6 feet PG. It's time for you to shine.
Hendo, what happened? it's like one day you get hot then we lose the next.
Tyrus, did okay but he should be in the paint getting rebounds not guarding SF.
DJ White, command the ball when you're in the hot spot.
Boris, help us you are the key to make this team successful. when you score we have a chance at anyone including to Heat.
when you have the ball in your hand it takes pressure from PG to PF and players will get open.I know you are not a very expressive as many American players but you have to get the ball in your hands.

Posted by: vinh | Jan 8, 2012 2:26:30 AM

What happened to the Up tempo offense we are still stuck at half court and it killed us with the size we have. We need to push the ball every drive.

Posted by: vinh | Jan 8, 2012 2:29:15 AM

and guess what there is no derrick rose in the draft 2012

Posted by: vinh | Jan 8, 2012 2:31:23 AM

The cats were soft inside the second half. The pacers had tons of second chance shots and offensive rebounds. If both of the cats starting gaurds got double digit rebounds , that tells you all you need to know as to what the big were not doing, namely clearing the boards after one shot.

Equally ,DJ was brilliant offensively ..but his assist total was way down from the night before which assists were all in the paint and brilliant , i must add. We need his offense but if he and Kemba dont get in the paint and dish , we have no chance at competing like the cats did in atlanta.

Dj must get double digit assists in the paint to get these athletic guys going who have no chance at creating shots for themselves. White, biz, thomas, brown ,diop.Kemba must get 5 in the paint. They can do it .

Silas will be fired and his staff unless he forces Dj to get in the paint and get easy buckets for his teamates ,to the tune of ten a night.

He must get the big men to block out and clear the boards after one shot too.

Equally, his staff must design some plays for the scorers on the team. All we see is some buddy ball between diaw and Dj. Thomas shud have a low block pic n roll w someone. The same for Brown. Both are awkward and need a play or two if the keep heavy minutes to keep the offense going.

Henderson can create his own shot by taking guys off the dribble but needs plays designed for him closer to the basket where the two gds are playing now instead of the catch n shoot coming from the other side.

Wheres the pik in roll?? The best play in basketball. Start it w guys other than the too small pt gds to be really effective but insert it!!!!

I'm sick of hearing about how talented Diaw is. His talent is like money buried in the ground, it bears no fruit. He makes poor decisions and walks around with that dopey, I could give a crap look on his face all the time. In the early days of this franchise, while it is true that they weren't very good, you could at least count on them to play hard every night, which is all I felt I could hope for at the time. This group just shows up when they feel like it and if the opponent turns up the heat as Indiana did, they just wilt like a cheap suit. As for Michael Jordan while he may have allowed Brown to influence him to make bad buys like Diop,
you can't fault him entirely for wanting to win now. People forget that this is a business and his personal fortune is at stake. It's easy to talk smack when it's not your money on the line, but when the seats are two-thirds empty, you do what you can do to produce a product that will put fannies in those seats. Charlotte sports fans are notoriously fickle they won't show up for a loser. I still have friends who are jacked up about the city building the arena despite the no vote, and it is hard to argue against the will of the voters being trampled on, but the fact is they did build it and my taxes are paying for it, so why not enjoy it?

Iron who are they going to get in the paint to??????????

Diaw is not going to shoot. He will kick out to someone.
They are hesitant when Mullens is in there! I know what the deal is, forgive me.

Diop is a joke,he should be cut with the amnesty rule.A young eager big man can and would be better than him.The trade for Mullens seems to be a great pickup with no risk at all.

after watching atlanta game......

ironman WTF do you even talk about. dude is averaging 7.5 assists right now while playing 34 mpg (NOT 40) and has a PER above 20. why are you complaining? go away.

claydog, the guy isn't a 20 ppg scorer but if you watch him play?! i mean watch him. just him. the entire 48. tell me he doesn't play hard and do the little things. he boxes out, he sets screens, he gets post position, he fills spaces, he knocks down open jumpers, he drives and dishes, he moves the ball, he plays defense. he's the ultimate glue guy. is he overpaid at 9 million a year? absolutely. but if he's making 5 million a year he's a steal. the guy is the PERFECT veteran for this young developing team. he gives you 10/9/4 against the hawks including the game tying bucket and nearly the game winner at the end of regulation. i don't get YOU fans. guys like monta ellis and brook lopez are craved for because they put up meaningless accumulative stats and guys like boris go under appreciated because they play a solid floor game with solid efficiency that lacks flash.

let the other guys be intense and let boris do his thing. it works.

subbing tyrus for maggette for the next month is AWESOME. hopefully we can talk maggette into retiring during that time frame. he has no business playing for this team what so ever. waiving him is inappropriate because of the business involved, but if we can trade him where he can be used and save a LITTLE money, it's worth it. if not, you decide between he and diop if either need amnesty'ing next year. but i'm enjoying him not playing RIGHT NOW.

mullens, augustin, white, diaw, thomas, WALKER, all played great against the hawks.

walker and augustin should both be kept. they are the d'angelo williams and jonathan stewart of the bobcats. keep em both, keep em healthy and rested and play em together at times. it's a luxury to have a solid PG in this league, keep both. forever.

biyombo is seriously going to be an elite nba defender. he's already blocking mad shots in NO PT. once he gets comfortable dunking on dudes, he's going to be SOLID. keep him in shape, let him be young slim shawn kemp, not old fat shawn kemp.

hendo had an off night. brown was respectably solid. this roster is really looking great.

next year we'll draft our cam in barnes. if we lose almost every single game this year in overtime.....that would be a dream come true. perfect scenario. we get the draft pick but still develop clutch genes and what not and then figure out the winning side of it next year and forward.

haven't watched the pacers game yet so judge the comment accordingly; watching later.

Lol. Looking forward to Charlottean's opinion after watching the Pacers game.

Posted by: apauldds | Jan 9, 2012 9:16:35 AM

ok. just got done with the indiana game....

augustin had a ton of assists where guys missed a layup or wide open shot and then made the put back. walker had one to mullens too. you also don't get assists for when guys get fouled which happened to thomas and henderson both. stop reading box scores and actually watch the game. the guy is quarterbackin the hell outta these games.

that offensive foul on boris in the 2nd quarter hansbrough was clearly in the restricted zone. what's the point in the lines being there if the refs ignore them? ridiculous. this seems to happen at least once a game. i don't get it. if the guys on the floor can't get it right have a guy on the sideline watching tv monitors that can input corrections on bad calls like this.

walker looked GREAT as a 2 guard in these 2 games. if we all recognize that he can have as GREAT of an nba career as jason terry if we all recognize he's destined to be THAT.....its for the best. the guy can shoot from outside way better than most people expected this early in his career. IDEAL 6th man....30 mpg guy. and he and DJ seem to be making it work with the zone defense. if they can figure that out over the course of this year and make it effective and disruptive....sky is the limit. especially if we bring in a 4th guard behind henderson that has height. maybe williams can be that guy but i expect somebody else to be the long term answer.

hendo is back. dunk was nasty, shots fell, etc. DO NOT UNDERSTAND HOW HE GETS A TECH FOR STANDING UP. dude was pushed to the ground and Hill jumps on his back and dude stands up. i don't get it. then the offensive foul call with hill and price DRAPPED on dudes arms. that's one of those home court vs. away court things. and a respect thing that will come with time for hendo and D.J. and others. give it a few years. maybe even just this year. it'll come.
gana played good defense even though he was getting away with mad fouls on hibbert.
biyombo still blocking shots and showing promise.
white took a step back with less playing time. he looked out of rhythm entirely. hope the ankle is OK. dude has been solid.
mullens was a bit off but still BROUGHT IT.
brown looked good at times. it's still hard to compare he and dante since dante is now starting for memphis and looks comfortable doing so, but brown is playing with a high motor getting his hands on a lot of loose balls, picking peoples pockets, offensive boards. dude is really developing into a solid role player for this team. i really like what we're seeing from him.
thomas...good to have him back. big improvement over maggette. he takes less shots and brings more to the table defensively. love the way he's approaching playing the 3.

all in all, we gotta remember. we're young. we were playing against a playoff team at their home court, 2nd night of a back to back. this team gave the bulls all they could handle last year and they swapped out dunleavy for west in the offseason. and their draft pick and t.j. ford for george hill. the pacers are a COMING team. they are like okc a year ago except that instead of durant they have granger. obvious downgrade, but the team is SOLID. supporting cast might be better than durant's. if not, at the very least equal. but this game was lost on the momentum with those calls. i mean officiating is going to be HORRIBLE every single night. but if we can scrape and scrap and grab some wins at the end of this year, get barnes, and come out winning next year?! we'll get the calls. that's how the nba operates. you get a star. you start winning. you get calls. it'll happen.

this bobcats team is on the right path. I hope silas can stay patient and stay teaching through all of this because he's the right guy for this group. we have the group of guys now we just have to coach them up and bring in barnes. these are good losses. we got beaten badly by indiana, but we were ahead the 1st half. we lose to atlanta but in overtime.

thanks to cory higgins for assisting paul george on the exclamation point. awesome.

knicks tonight......i'm hype as hell.
