Charlotte Bobcats' trade exception could come in handy
I have a wide-ranging interview in Sunday’s Observer with Charlotte Bobcats president of basketball operations Rod Higgins and general manager Rich Cho. One of the things they emphasize in that interview is they don’t intend to do anything panic-driven or short-sighted to make the team cosmetically better between now and the Mar. 15 trade deadline.
That doesn’t mean the Bobcats would necessarily sit out the trade deadline, which comes a month later than usual due to the lockout delaying the season. The Bobcats would certainly listen to a deal that would send them an asset (a draft pick or a young player) in return for another team or teams borrowing some of their salary-cap flexibility.
The Oklahoma City Thunder often did that sort of deal when Cho was with that organization. Here’s how such a deal could work, concerning the Bobcats:
The Bobcats created a $3.5 million trade exception – Shaun Livingston’s salary this season – when they included Livingston’s salary in the June deal that brought the No. 7 pick and Corey Maggette to the Bobcats. That trade exception expires on June 23, a year removed from the day Livingston was dealt to Milwaukee.
That means the Bobcats could acquire a player with a salary comparable to or smaller than Livingston’s without sending a salary to the other team. The Bobcats’ current payroll is just under the $58 million salary cap, so they’re more than $12 million below a payroll requiring them to pay luxury tax.
All that’s important this way: Say there’s a team looking to get below the luxury-tax number. (By my count, seven teams are currently above the $70.3 million tax threshold.) Maybe they’d be willing to send a first-round pick to the Bobcats in return for parking a veteran salary on the Bobcats’ payroll. Such a team could even compensate the Bobcats, up to $3 million, for what remains of that veteran’s salary.
Or say there are two teams that want to make a trade that doesn’t quite conform to cap rules. But that deal would work if a third team would absorb up to $3.5 million in salary. The Bobcats could facilitate that deal in return for some sort of compensation, like a draft pick.
By my count, the Bobcats are one of just eight NBA teams under the salary cap. I’m thinking that Livingston trade exception could be pretty handy, as they look to pick up an extra draft pick.
ON THE PICK THEY OWE THE BULLS: I’m often asked about that first-round pick the Bobcats eventually owe the Chicago Bulls, as compensation for acquiring Tyrus Thomas two years ago. According to an NBA document I saw, there are various levels of protection on that pick that could push it out as far as the 2016 draft. The first-round pick the Portland Trail Blazers still owe the Bobcats in the Gerald Wallace deal could be conveyed as early as 2013 and as late as 2016.
The Bobcats owe the Thunder a second-round pick in 2013.

The Cats have to get that number one pick. If you watched amy of Today's game, you can see how dominant he will be. He is a franchise player. He will only get Better. Absolutely amazing.

Mr. Jordan (and his top leutenants) should sit down with Mr. Kahn of the Charlotte Checkers. The Checkers win consistently - even though they have played in 3 different leagues in 5 years.

Here are the protections on the Chicago pick:
2012: top-14
2013: top-12
2014: top-10
2015: top-8
2016: unprotected

Seriously. Mr Kahn? because he runs a mnor league hockey team? Now that is funny. I am glad you are proud of your son Mrs. Kahn, but that is ridiculous. How does he handle the salary cap? Mid level exceptions? the draft. His international scouting department? Has he been part of a CBA negotiation? What about working with FIBA to get a player. That has to be the biggest joke I have ever heard of. Running a minor league hockey might qualify you to run a dairy queen,. That is aout it.
Posted by: Davey | Feb 25, 2012 6:21:57 PM
Did someone really just compare running an NBA team with a minor league hockey franchise? Good grief.
Posted by: PantherDave | Feb 25, 2012 7:29:14 PM
Can we just give Thomas back to the Bulls and they can keep the pick! If he spent as much time working on his game that he spends on that stupid ink on his body he would still stink!

Rick: Sitting here watching the All-Star Game and was thinking about the game being held in Charlotte in '91. What are you memories about that weekend and any good inside stories from that event?

Who comes off the books this year other than Boring Diaw? Gana and Maggette come off next year, correct?
Posted by: Sambo | Feb 27, 2012 11:16:12 AM
najera 2.6, diaw 9, higgins rookie min, this year, plus white, augustin, and brown are due for raises/extensions.
next year you have carroll (3.5) gana (7.37) reggie williams (2.5) maggette (10.9) with mullens and henderson up for extensions.

The Checkers are the perfect team to learn from, everything about the Bobcats is minor league from the owner, Higgins and the coaching staff.

Presuming the right players are drafted and the right players are signed using the cap room that will be available in 1.5 years, this team has a chance. HOWEVER, will that chance be taken advantage of?
Posted by: Sambo | Feb 27, 2012 2:59:49 PM
TrueBBFan, you have never been to the Arena it is very apparent. This is a top notch arena and a great product. The NBA is up in every measurable way, and the NHL can't find a TV market on the shopping network. Nobody cares.

Marco
I have been to the arena many times had season tickets up to two seasons ago then went to a 20 game plan and that stopped at the beginning of this season and went to the Golden State game only because I had family in town. The NBA is up because it promotes "the star system" it is not team based like hockey. Hockey took the tough medicine and when they went on strike they established a structure that will allow both large market and small markets to compete, the NBA players and owners didn't have the cajones to solve the problem. As for a sport I'll take NHL anyday more competitive and the sport requires much much more skill. No stories in the NHL about someone of large size picking up a puck at 17 and entering the NHL at 19, no Manute Bols in the NHL.

the biggest most critical issues we face right now are drafting the right guy (not drummond) and resigning augustin and white at the right price. if augustin commands too much money, we can always front load it to where it doesn't hurt us, or sign and trade at that point, but to let him walk without compensation would be truly idiotic. and the smartest thing to do would be to resign him and if it doesn't work out, trade him later. point guards of his caliber are always tradeable.
hope we keep derrick brown too. white is a solid, ideal bench guy but if we get davis or sullinger in the draft to replace diaw, and we decide to keep thomas and figure to keep mullens.......that's a lot of young bigs on one roster as is this year. only so many can play.
Posted by: charlottean | Feb 28, 2012 10:57:00 AM
who are some of the top free agents names for this off season?
Posted by: 336nda704 | Feb 28, 2012 11:00:52 AM
eric gordon is restricted, howard and williams of course but they're almost guaranteed to go to either dallas or new jersey or in an absolute sweep of luck orlando.
of the less desireables....j.r. smith, kevin garnett, ray allen, kirk hinrich, jason terry, lamar odom has a team option that won't get picked up, jamison, rudy fernandez will be restricted, kwame brown coming off a missed 7 million dollar season, thabeet and others didn't have their 3rd year options picked up and might be ideal pickups on the cheap for the cats. there's the slightest chance that andrew bynum becomes available. its not likely but if the lakers say we'll give him and gasol up for williams and howard and the magic somehow drop the ball on taking what they can get.....bynum has a team option that could not likely but still possibly be declined.
bucks have delfino, ersan ilyasova, livingston, all possible free agents. solid bench guys.
minnesota has michael beasley, anthony randolph (restricted) and anthony tolliver. all solid young bigs.
kris humphries, ryan anderson will be restricted, steve nash, i think spencer hawes but he might have re-upped already, shannon brown, felton, camby, wallace has a player option he could conceivably decline to try and get a last 3 or 4 year deal. c.j. miles ( i think), nick young, javale mcgee (restricted).
there just isn't anybody out there we should really be considering unless they fall into our lap. eric gordon might be a guy you make a run at if we can because if we were to draft a davis/sullinger/barnes guy and put him in a lineup with gordon, biyombo, augustin, and either henderson or thomas.......you might be immediately really good. but gordon will be expensive. we will have to overpay to get him here and most likely have to amnesty maggette to fit him under the cap. i expect for sacramento, toronto, new orleans, new jersey (if they lose on williams/howard), and maybe minnesota to go after him. minnesota has the best trade bait with guys like wesley johnson and anthony randolph and michael beasley and wayne ellington.
i don't see the cats moving on gordon with henderson looking good and due for an extension unless they trade hendo in the deal but i would expect they would only do this AFTER getting a top 4 pick in this draft.
anybody else is worthless for our team.
Posted by: charlottean | Feb 28, 2012 1:57:33 PM
Bobcats draft choices should be:
1.) Anthony Davis
2.) Harrison Barnes
3.) Andre Drummonds
Davis would be ideal to pair up with Biyombo, that would be one of the most athletic and defensive minded front courts in the league. In 2 years those two guys will be significantly better thatn the Rasheed/Ben Wallace duo that won a Championship with Detroit.
Posted by: RobC | Feb 28, 2012 4:05:06 PM
I have never seen Davis shoot outside of 5'. To compare his offensive game to Rasheed Wallace is a joke. Davis reminds me more of a Marcus Camby type of player, which is obviosuly still a great asset for any team, but no Rasheed Wallace on offense.
Posted by: Coach K | Feb 28, 2012 4:19:11 PM
You need to watch more KU games. Davis is the truth. He can play inside and out.
Posted by: James | Feb 28, 2012 5:18:01 PM
rasheed wallace was 1 for 4 in college 3's. total. in 2 years. i too would compare davis more to a HEALTHY marcus camby but even camby developed a deep jumper over time. he didn't have that in college either.
i don't think drummond is the pick. i think biyombo is going to be the long term solution at center and i think drummond is likely to be brendan haywood. he MIGHT be roy hibbert, but even hibbert took a while to come around and is only beating up on guys right now because of the lack of size in the league right now. drummond is just insanely unimpressive right now. i would take sullinger over him in a heart beat. i'd prob take the czech kid over drummond too.
if all goes well we wind up with davis or barnes and it doesn't matter. we can go augustin/henderson/brown or thomas/davis/biyombo or we can go augustin/henderson/barnes/mullens or thomas/biyombo and build from there. ideally we get 1 of those 2 guys, turn around and get another top 5 pick the following year and run with it.
Posted by: charlottean | Feb 28, 2012 5:25:50 PM
Marco,
In the '09-'10 season 23 of 30 teams lost money and the net loss was $340mm...last season was similar.
You can read about it here: http://www.nba.com/2011/news/07/06/nba-rebuttal/index.html
The loud music and fancy lights at the arena might make a big impression on you but they are in no way a sign of how the league is doing.
Over a 4 year period (last 2 + this year and next) the Bobcats are likely to lose over $100,000,000 -- that's serious coin.
Make no mistake about it, this is a very dire situation.
Posted by: George Hanson | Feb 28, 2012 8:14:44 PM
just like we're supposed to believe the epicentre is losing hundreds of millions of dollars.
the nba's tv deals makes up a HUGE amount of the total revenue and they didn't stop getting that income over the past several years. the tv ratings for the playoffs this past year were very good numbers from what i recollect. these owners created these dire situations by mismanaging. the league isn't broken, but the owners were playing vegas black jack with multimillion dollar businesses. the thrill of the win consumes many of them.
but how much cash are they actually pulling out of the pocket to put into the business each year? that's how much they're losing. and considering how many major corporate partnerships and sponsors the bobcats have created over the past 2 years under jordan, and the decrease in payroll to this year and even less next year, they can't possibly be losing THAT much based on how much they were losing without all of those items going their way. not to add in about the lux tax increase helping the bobcats and other non tax teams assuming they kept those aspects of revenue sharing intact and or increased them.
in businesses that big, the accountants can manipulate it whichever way they want to.

I believe the Pacers will unfortunately be the frontrunner for Gordon.
Posted by: Downtown Sports | Feb 29, 2012 12:58:51 AM
No to Eric Gordon! I'm tired of these undersized guards!
Posted by: Piff | Feb 29, 2012 11:57:21 AM
agreed. more so because you will have to overpay to get him. he's a 10 million a year guy entering his prime. but he'll command a ridiculous joe johnson'esque overpayment this offseason. somebody will give him a huge check. i'd rather it weren't us. rather give that money to augustin and henderson.
hope bismack isn't going to miss any time, he was starting to "get it" a bit.
Posted by: charlottean | Mar 1, 2012 11:06:32 AM
Yes a dire situation. Record tv ratings and a new CBA that is my owner friendly. Sounds pretty dire. What a moron.
Posted by: Davey | Mar 2, 2012 7:42:48 AM
the nba will be in a dire situation when guys stop getting checks and when free agents stop getting signed. if they were all going bankrupt, they would just do with what they had and sign all minimum contract players, not max guys out and give tyrus thomases 40 million dollar deals.
these guys, regardless of how lucky they are/were, are multi million to billionaires. they know money. sure some of them are idiots but the vast majority aren't.

DJ Augustine isnt a starting PG. we really dont need to re-sign him. I'd try and trade him for a pick and maybe a lesser veteran PG. We have to pick a PG out of the two we have based off them being similar size. Kemba is more athletic and explosive and DJ is well just average. Put Kemb,a with Anthony Davis and a wing guy that can actually score and we may have something. But spending a boatload on an average Dj Augustine isnt a smart move. #TRADEDJ!
Posted by: TRADE DJ HE'S AVERAGE | Mar 2, 2012 11:01:39 AM
if augustin isn't a starting caliber pg, kemba definitely isn't.
i just don't see how you could say that about augustin. name 15 pg's better than augustin in the nba. you can't.
Posted by: charlottean | Mar 2, 2012 3:46:13 PM
very informative post. hope the bobcats front office actually makes a good decision with regards to our roster...
Posted by: catzfan | Mar 3, 2012 2:23:56 PM
The Tarheels beat the Bobcats in a seven game series! No game seven needed!
Posted by: joe cool | Mar 4, 2012 2:50:22 AM
the bobcats need to change their color and jerseys to maybe carolina blue. i mean really, we have a boring court that shows our team executives bad choice and the jersey is just like someone did not put any work into it. we have the ugliest jersey i have seen. we have just one color and maybe some stripes but come on we need the blue.i wish we could have someone train byombo because it seems that his hook is okay but we need a real big man coach because oakley is not there anymore. Patrick Hewing maybe.
Give us a young coach as well. there with the right draft picks it should be good.
Posted by: Vinh | Mar 4, 2012 4:20:32 AM
If kemba starts , you will routinely see pt gds lighting it up as derron did last nite. He cant defend anyone. He wont get in the paint and pass ,only force a shot up for himself. He has no desire or ability to be a pass first pt gd.
Posted by: Ironman | Mar 5, 2012 7:35:57 AM
Charlottean. Name 15 PG's in the NBA better than Augustin? You're joking right?
In no particular order.. Deron Williams, Chris Paul, Russell Westbrook, Rajon Rondo, Jeremy Lin, Jose Calderon, Mike Conley, Jrue Holiday, Kyrie Irving, Ricky Rubio, Tony Parker, Derrick Rose, John Wall, Kyle Lowrly, Ty Lawson, Brandon Jennings, Lou Williams, and hell even Tyreke Evans if you want to consider him a PG, and probably even Andre Miller as far as a better all around game.
Posted by: Jason Warren | Mar 5, 2012 1:47:00 PM
you just proved my point,
tyreke evans is not a 1. neither is lou williams. andre miller is about to turn 36 and is basically dead even with augustin. jrue holiday is not better, maybe looking better because his team is playing better but he on his own is not better. brandon jennings is completely debatable but since he's younger than d.j., i'll give you him.
mike conley is not better. he's not far behind, but he is NOT better. same as holiday, he looks better on a much better team.
lin is not even up for discussion yet, but if we want to talk about his 1.69 assist to turnover ratio, go right ahead. he is scoring the ish out of the ball and winning some games, so if it keeps up rest of this year AND next year....sure you can have lin.
by my count that's 14 and you forgot nash who i would still include. so augustin would fall in at 16. that was putting all those guys you named plus nash but minus lou williams, tyreke evans, mike conley, jrue holiday. and lowry's season numbers are clearly better than DJ's but his career numbers aren't. you also forgot curry but again the numbers are right on par with augustin's career numbers.
ohn wall is shooting 91% from 3's this year. oh wait, sorry that was .091% from 3's this year.
the biggest thing to think about is........if dude is the 16th or 17th best point guard in the league. and he's not having a season up to his potential. and none of our other players outside of maybe gerald henderson or biyombo even sniff the top 35 at their position.......why would you want to trade or let the guy walk? shouldn't we be focused on getting guys at the other positions first? and the 14 or 15 guys in front of him? they aren't going anywhere anytime soon (meaning trades/free agency). so what are you going to trade augustin for? a worse point guard? the kid might have a lowry'esque bump next year and be that guy we need. rondo took 3 years before he looked like a player.
walker definitely isn't top 30 pg. all the barea's and collison's and fisher's and chalmer's and felton's and whoever.
there's the elite group of rose, rondo, williams, paul and westbrook. there's the veteran elite of nash and parker. there's the younger elite of irving, wall, rubio and maaaaaaaaaaybe jennings. and then you got the group that is completely debatable and augustin is definitely in that group with the lowry's and calderons and lawson and curry. he's in the discussion. ask the gm's of THOSE teams.
30 teams in the league = 30 starters and dude is not ranked 21-30. he's a legit starter in this league.
Posted by: charlottean | Mar 5, 2012 3:13:56 PM
So is this "post" Dead or what?? Seriously. What is going on with Biyombo anybody have any news as of lately.
I could not have imagined Diaw wanted out... He looked as if he loved to play in Charlotte, ecspecially when we were in NY(SARCASM). Could those games have been a HUGH HINT!!!
Just my opinion but I think the soft attitude Silas talks about starts with Diaw. I mean I hated the Hot-dogging by "Jack" but starting to miss it.
Posted by: David Stern has to go!! | Mar 6, 2012 2:47:08 PM
ROD HIGGINS is a complete joke....the guy even has his son on the team.....come on MJ!! Fire him
.....if your gonna hire family why not hire your brother....he did a good job running the Flight23 stores back in the day and hopefully he's recovered from his years of addiction
Posted by: Scott | Mar 6, 2012 2:49:25 PM
Huge Hint sorry.
The fact Diaw is having to ask to leave makes me want to puke!
Posted by: David Stern has to go!! | Mar 6, 2012 2:52:55 PM
i say no buyout. I say unless dude takes about 1.5 million off his salary, no go. he'll make some of it back in playoff income especially if guys go deep. but where he'll really lose is if he isn't playing in the playoffs, nobody is signing him next year for anything more than 2 million. he does something significant for somebody, and all of a sudden he's getting a 3 year 12 million deal with a contender.
the guy can play. i almost can't blame him for not being motivated this year. they probably told him he wasn't in the plans going in, so what's the point? if they told him "if you play great, we definitely want you back" that's different but we all know they didn't. so it goes both ways.
i don't think new york needs him. i mean they can definitely use another big, but harrleson and jeffries are more than capable of playing a combined 20 mpg. and that's all thats needed.
lakers could use him a whole lot more. celtics too. orlando MAYBE. portland would be a good fit joining the other former bobcats.
but they killed the trade market on the guy. either they royally screwed up on motivating the guy or the guy is just an absolute enigma. he played really well for his french team in the offseason and showed it in spurts for us. then he sucked a whole bunch. i just don't get it.
Posted by: charlottean | Mar 6, 2012 3:18:28 PM
Yeah I can't say that I blame him for this season. However If he played harder we may not be a complete joke now, but still be good draft position.
you look at the past and I think Diaw was politley trying to say what he has said now.
He would disappear long lengths but would be productive enough all around. Then Bobcats would go to Pheonix and San Antonio and NY and it seemed all those towns was a different motivation.
Same as this year. If DJ had not been hurt and was playing rather than Kemba at Pheonix, that would have been a potential triple dbl., 20+ game Looked at one time like he was frustrated Kemba was not getting him the ball more.
I am not so sure he was not trying to say something, with out saying it, after Raja left.
