Charlotte Bobcats rookie Michael Kidd-Gilchrist shows he is a team guy

I’d heard that one of the things I’d like about Charlotte Bobcats rookie Michael Kidd-Gilchrist was how much he cares about teammates and team agenda.

Thursday night, in a mean-nothing exhibition at North Charleston Coliseum, I saw something pretty meaningful: Kidd-Gilchrist wasn’t playing because he wasn’t playing well. Rookies are entitled to have bad nights, particularly early on. Along the bench, with the Bobcats making up an 18-point deficit, MKG was going nuts rooting for teammates.

You know those walk-ons at North Carolina who wave their towels so emphatically along the bench they appear rehearsed? MKG was that animated, but nothing about this seemed staged. He was thrilled for teammates and that doesn’t happen enough at the NBA level.

Remember when Allen Iverson was searching for one last NBA gig? Some of you said he’d be so entertaining, it was worth the risk. I replied he’d be so disruptive on a young team, it would have been a disaster.

It’s always been about Iverson. It would always be about Iverson. Maybe that’s tolerable when Iverson is in his prime. It’s exhausting and debilitating when he’s not.

I saw a rookie last night vested in his team’s success regardless of how his night went. That confirms what I’d heard about last season’s Wildcats and MKG, in particular. That’s encouraging.

I know it was just preseason, but I would have loved to see the game. Glad I was able to catch the radio broadcast on nba.com. I heard the broadcaster say the same thing about MKG. How animated he was on the bench getting his teammates involved. He has a bright future. Nice, humble young man.

i can't believe people are still talking about iverson. dude is so out of shape he couldn't play in china this year. we could have used him 2 years ago, not now. nobody can use him now.

re: the towel waving....for everything that was said about tyrus thomas, he did a WHOLE LOT of that last year. and rick i read you say the opposite but I saw it with my own eyes, dude was a good teammate last year through his and the team's struggles. he stayed keyed in on every moment of every game.

how about mullens going off in the 4th last night? I had on the audio while doing other things and 4th quarter it was like "mullens with a 3" on repeat. i look up and dude went from 2 points to 15. I think he's going to be our guy. way too many missed free throws down the stretch, but it's preseason.

henderson damn sure better be starting come regular season. hope he just did that for kicks and isn't actually considering that.

Bummer couldn't watch live as sounded like a good game. Which even if we lose is better than 99% of last years boring games.
So far in pre-season it's been interesting.
Mullens looking better than expected but a 7 foot 3 point team leader isnt ideal. He need a strong post game also.
MKG will be solid strong sheet stuffer at a minimum and that is great. The teams attitude is so 110% improved from last year.
Haven't seen a team of 5 yet that looks in the groove but early.
Gordon looks good but should look amazing for price.
Hendo, Mullens, and MKG may be the 3 solid core (no superstars but really good and solid) to build from. Biz and Kemba not impressing yet but early.

Love what the coach is doing. Experimenting with line ups. Will be interesting to see the rotation in the coming season.

They added 5 new players this season. Add 2 through the draft and a couple of free agents next summer and you already have a decent roster . If any of the current players develop, this team will not be far off.

Pumped for the opener. This team is already getting intersting. When MKG and Hendo start playing their full complement of minutes, they will be fun to watch.

^^^ that duo could easily look like carter and jefferson at times.

mullens can shoot all the 3's he want if he's playing D and rebounding. there are plenty of successful big man shooters in league history. and byron actually does have a post game to mix it up. but if he's shooting 3's, it opens lanes up for hendo and MKG and leaves the post for biz. it's a recipe that has worked.

they try to switch a smaller guy on him to keep their bigs in the lane? you expose that by isolating that big one on one against the smaller wing player or by posting mullens up against the smaller guy.

EMBRACE IT it's not a problem unless he shoots kemba %'s which I doubt he will. far more likely he goes all gallo right now and makes OKC look stupid for going with ibaka and perkins over he and jeff green.

Hey Big Time, what kind of free agents do you anticipate the Bobcats will be able to sign up? Good ones? Expensive ones?

It's early but I'm getting nervous that Beal will be the stud of this draft and the cats will be the laughingstock of the league again. God I hope not.

I'm more concerned about how good klay thompson is looking for golden state. barnes too but jesus klay thompson is LEGIT. we took kemba over THAT DUDE. bizmack too, but kemba is the glaring mistake there.

derrick williams just had a monster game and he was offered up for the #2 pick. price just went up.

beal is going to be dope, but I don't see us looking foolish for not taking him #2. not when cleveland took waiters #4 instead of moving up for beal. they're going to be the ones that look stupid. especially if barnes turns out to be a stud and waiters a dud. he looks like joe forte/rashad mccants material. talented but stuuuuuuupid. barnes went 8 for 11 last night for 20.

like i said on draft night.....i don't dislike the pick. he fits the coach and the roster make-up. i dislike the pick AT TWO. we could have and should have traded back to 4 and gotten another pick or to 6 and gotten another pick. we would have saved money and still gotten our guy and another guy. we got stuck holding cards, which maybe was the plan (play hard ball and worst case pick him 2nd) but there were better options out there than to take the 5th rated prospect 2nd. sacramento was the only team that might have taken him and that was unlikely. by all accounts, they wanted barnes over mkg and took robinson when he fell to them. the WORST we could have done was take beal and trade him to washington for 3 and a future pick or cash. and save about a million on MKG's salary. just made zero sense to take him 2nd when we didn't have to.

if we need a 3rd pg, we need to go get ben hansbrough. if they have cory higgins on the roster i'm quitting.

Don't give up on Kemba yet. I liked the way he played for Dunlap at summer league. No lock that he makes it but too early to tell.

Diop, Carroll and Williams will come off the payroll. 12 million ish. Whoever they get will be better than those three. Even if they are at the Sessions and Haywood level. However with that kind of space and amnesty of another 8 million still available, I would strongly consider the trade route. Widens your pool of candidates. Looks like they will also have 2 number one picks this year. Possibly 3. Should be a very intersting off season for Cho. Many many options. He has really done an amazing job of at least putting them in position to start getting better. Hard to believe they were recently buried agains the cap with no draft picks.

Posted by: Big Time | Oct 13, 2012 10:16:53 AM

I would rather they keep the money and carefully allocate the funds to extensions to the right guys. We're going to have another 2 or 3 top 10 picks coming in and we have to pay hendo and mullens and then it will be biz and then mkg. The last thing we need is another tyrus thomas on the books.

That said, another ben gordon deal would be dope .those contracts are more valuable as trade chips than they are as cap room. More picks means more capability to move up on draft day to get elite guys. Oh and steph curry/ty lawson are the exceptions if they hit free agency. By all means throw big money at either if the opportunity arises. Overpay if you have to. Just keep in mind all the guys we eventually have to pay. Last thing we need is a detroit situation. Or even an okc situation where they are GREAT but can"t afford to keep it together.

25 3's. We need to run some plays for Bismack at the 3 pt line!! Seriously? I know its preseason, fair enough.

Posted by: David Stern has to go!! | Oct 16, 2012 10:28:26 PM

we got the same points per shot on the 3's as the 2's. still got to the line 23 times. I can live with it. It's stan van gundy style ball without dwight howard.

Exactly what I was thinking about Magic
Been basically watching Gamecast on my phone, which is not really watching at all.

Posted by: David Stern has to go!! | Oct 17, 2012 4:23:04 PM

cory higgins on final roster Rod needs to go!

Posted by: joe cool | Oct 17, 2012 9:39:53 PM

yea it's not like watching at all, but it's the kind of thing a die hard fan does.

cory higgins on final roster means we all need to go.

Posted by: charlottean | Oct 18, 2012 12:25:09 PM

Corey Higgins on the roster means I don't go to any games. If they are not taking this team seriously, then neither am I. You telling me there is not a better player than the GMs son that they could have found? Absolutely one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard of in sports. Wish I should say I was surprised. Hope he doesn't have any more kids.

Posted by: Davo | Oct 19, 2012 6:33:20 AM

Is it any more ridiculous than letting a coach's son take over the team?

Posted by: Sports don | Oct 20, 2012 10:05:23 AM

Wow tough loss!
Seriously Guys had every reason toooo "bail" and give up, many times!!!!!!
Chose to play hard in a Preseason game to bust their ass and try to win! Coaching?? or just a group of pridefull guys and no EGO'S involved.
Says something!

TT HELLUVA game and looks as if He put on quite a fews pounds.
