New Orleans video makes name-change buzz louder
If the Charlotte Bobcats aren't about to become the Charlotte Hornets again, someone in New Orleans has a sick sense of humor. Or they're trolling you. Or both.
The New Orleans Hornets, who are about to become the New Orleans Pelicans and make the Hornets nickname a free agent, created a farewell video for Hugo, the team's buzzing mascot from its inception in Charlotte in 1988.
The video in itself isn't that unusual -- highlights from mascot antics through the years -- but the background music is interesting. I won't spoil it for you, you can listen for yourself.
The team also created a Facebook page, with the title "What's next for Hugo?"This comes on top of last week's conversation about the release of a retro collection from team owner Michael Jordan's Jordan Brand, in purple and teal, that team president Fred Whitfield told Scott Fowler was a "total coincidence."
NBA commissioner-in-waiting Adam Silver is scheduled to be in town for an annual visit with the Bobcats to meet with some season-ticket holders.
I have been told that nothing regarding a name change is imminent, but all of these little things, taken as a group, sure are making things interesting.
It might be more interesting what another occurrence today means -- the Bobcats and obsessive coach Mike Dunlap canceled a shootaround. Hmmmm.
But it seems everyone is focused on Hugo, who could become the biggest free agent signing in team history.

Hugo was far more entertaining than the team- then or now.

After all of this "coincidence", I'm going to be furious if the name isn't changed to Hornets. All of these odd things intersecting each other at the same time seem to be more than just mere coincidence.
Hugo wants to come home and we want him home. Make it happen MJ!!!!!!!!!!!

About time they make this move.

It's been years now and I have got to get something off my chest. I hate Rufus Lynx. There it's out there and I'm not ashamed. If ever there were a DB of mascot it is this guy. He is the guy you went to high school with that put way too much gel in his hair, tried way too hard to be cool and everyone kind of made fun of. He is the kid you play basketball with that always wants to run the point and screams how he is "always open", then he always tries to go to the rack even though there are 4 guys down low, when he gets blocked he calls foul or he misses and screams out because "he usually makes that". Then one day on his 16th birthday rather than getting a car he shows up on a motorcycle thinking that would make him cool and it maybe it was a little cool at first but then after a while he started trying too hard again and you remembered why you didn't like this kid to begin with. Hugo never tried too hard, he was the guy you went to school with that you wanted at your party no matter how bad he sucked at sports because he was hilarious and he had swagger because he was so humble. In short, peace out Rufus we never really liked you.

With the timing of all of this, it will be on helluva prank if it doesn't happen. Don't screw this one up MJ! LET'S GO CHARLOTTE HORNETS!

Meet the new Buzz, same as the old Buzz...

If there is no name change, this will be the biggest tease ever.
I support the team because im from this city and it is my home. But everything else about the team is just depressing. Let's upgrade from a middle school nickname to something we can put a little more pride behind.
Obviously we want a better product on the court, but im not a fairweather fan who only goes to games when my team is good.

Am I the only one who's gonna miss Rufus?
Posted by: apauldds | Apr 15, 2013 1:22:01 PM
If they get the name back, I just hope that they make the new mascot better looking than the one NO had. Their hornet looked way worst than Rufus.

Hey apauldds: YES, yes you will be.
Posted by: Steve | Apr 15, 2013 1:25:23 PM
I gotta bee-lieve this is about to happen.
If they change the name - MJ will be labeled a genius. If they don't, and he still makes money off his new teal and purple line - he's a jerk.

Rufus is akin to that stupid dog Poochy that was on The Simpsons Itchy and Scratchy show, sunglasses and all. Bring back Hugo - another named engrained in Charlotte lore.

My kids will miss Rufus

Grownups. Worried about incoherent tall guys making millions throwing a round inflated ball through a small cylinder...and caring. Even when they half try or jump to another city for a few bucks.

Hey MJ I'm ready to purchase two season tickets IF you change the name back to Charlotte Hornets........BRING BACK THE BUZZ!!!! And Hugo! And Super Hugo! And The Honeybees!

I'm a Bobcats fan since the day Charlotte got the team. I will root for the team regardless of the name or even the record. That said, Hornets all the way! It's the biggest no brainer in professional sports history!, Charlotte Hornets is aname with history, an identity. Bring Hugo home!

I'm all in for Hugo and the Hornets. As long as they do not bring with them Jerry Vaillancourt.

Agree with Russ.

Bring back the Hornets, but also bring back Fat Guy, the big guy with white shirt and tie who did flips down the court during time outs!
Posted by: LB | Apr 15, 2013 5:20:21 PM
MJ needs to get rid of that thug bozo he has doing the PA as well and bring back James K Flynn......."Heeerrreee Come Your Hornets!"
Posted by: Phil | Apr 15, 2013 8:50:12 PM
WOW...People wont support the team because of a name....Really? That sounds like something my 7 year old would say or do. Spend the money getting better talent....Sould not try to buy loyalty by changing a name. How does that sound...I wont watch a team beacuse of their name, not because of the product on the floor, but the name.

Forget about the name change this year...leave that to next year!!!
This year, focus on improving the team, that way you won't put another stain in the Hornets name, leave that to the Bobcats.
1. Fire Mike Dunlap and hire Doug Collins.
2. Draft Marcus Smart or Ben McLemore.
3. Sign Al Jefferson.
4. Resign Gerald Henderson and Josh McRoberts, both for the right price.
5. Sign and trade Byron Mullens, unless you can resign him REALLY cheap, or let him play his last year and trade him at the deadline in 2014.
6. Try to trade Ben Gordon's expiring contract - Richard Hamilton (GSW) could be a good target; similar contracts, veteran mentor, and could fill the need as a backup SF. None of them should play much anyways.
7. Sign a one more shooter such as: Kyle Korver, Anthony Morrow or Carlos Delfino
8. Amnesty Tyrus Thomas
9. Then after the house is clean and this team is ready for the playoffs, announce the change of name to the CHARLOTTE HORNETS and become relevant once again for ALL THE RIGHT REASONS!!! :-)

grown ups not being able to correctly attribute quotes on a message board.
mullens can't be traded if he's resigned on the QO. Richard Hamilton plays for Chicago, Richard Jefferson plays for Golden State. Why on earth would we draft marcus smart? why fire mike dunlap? he just improved out win total ~11-12 while playing the young guys MORE. Think about that.
all we need to do is keep doing what we're doing. 1 more year outside looking in (maybe) and then we have a good 10 year run in the group we're assembling.
if there's anything we NEED to do, it's make sure seth curry is wearing number 30 with Charlotte on the front next year. even the loons who care about mascots should be able to get behind that idea.

It's official, the New Orleans Hornets are now the Pelicans. Brings back the Hornets to its original place. Charlotte. The time is NOW

There once was a man named Bob.
It turned out that he was a snob.
'He is the reason I won't buy full seasons,'
Or so was the plea you would lob.
Then along came a man named Jord.
A Bobcats team, he could afford.
Everyone shouted 'yay, 'I'll now watch the 'Cats play,'
But still from my house in Concord.
Moral of the story: 90% of the people that claim they will buy season tickets if MJ changes the name will have a new excuse not to buy the next day. He needs true proof that he can make his investment back, and history has shown fans to be all talk.
For the record, I think it will be a good thing if the name changes, but people need to put their money where their mouth is.

If MJ doesn't rename my mother's hometown NBA team its rightful name, then it will be the biggest blunder and missed opportunity ever in the history of sports. other than Kobe being traded to the Lakers by the "ahem" Hornets. MJ is an NC legend and hope that he doesn't let us down.

blown away they fired dunlap. Blown away.
Somebody important must have asked for it or he himself said something really stupid in his exit interview. I don't get how the guy that took a 7-66 team and made it a 21-61 team and got younger in the process doesn't deserve year 2.
UNLESS LAWRENCE FRANK WANTS THE JOB (start that bandwagon NOW).
Noel, Curry, Frank. Now.
