Larry Jordan, brother of Bobcats owner Michael, named director of player personnel
LAS VEGAS -– Larry Jordan, older brother of Charlotte Bobcats owner Michael Jordan, is being promoted to the team’s director of player personnel, a team spokesman confirmed Tuesday night.
The promotion of Larry Jordan, previously holding the title of director of special projects, was first reported by Yahoo Sports.
Jordan, who would report to team president of basketball operations Rod Higgins and general manager Rich Cho, is in Las Vegas this week for the Bobcats’ participation in summer league. He’ll be doing various scouting assignments in this new job.
Director of player personnel is a position last held with the Bobcats by Buzz Peterson before he left in 2009 for a second stint as head coach at Appalachian State. Peterson, Michael Jordan’s college roommate at North Carolina and a close friend, later left Appalachian State for UNC Wilmington.
Hiring relatives has been a common practice for the Bobcats in their decade-long history. Past head coaches Bernie Bickerstaff and Paul Silas each hired a son as an assistant. Higgins’ son, Cory, played point guard the 2011-12 season for the Bobcats. Most recently, Patrick Ewing Jr., son of the team’s associate head coach, was given a spot on the summer-league roster.

WHAT? MJ HIRING SOMEONE CLOSE TO HIM WITH NO QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE POSITION?
COLOR ME SUPRISED. GLAD I DON'T SUPPORT THIS TEAM ANY MORE.

Bring your family to work day is getting ridiculous!
Posted by: Jamey | Jul 16, 2013 10:46:50 PM
this is almost as ridiculous as mayor foxx's wife getting that 100k "job" right after he became mayor. sadly, that was with taxpayer money.

Really Sam?..... smh

Why didn't Jordan give his own sons spots on the summer league roster?

HATERS move on,,
Posted by: JC | Jul 17, 2013 2:33:59 AM
You don't have to be a HATER, JC, when there's nothing to love, past, present, or future.
Jordan continues to be a joke as a businessman.

No Wonderlic Test required for that job!!!!!
Some things never, ever, change....
Posted by: NASTAR99 | Jul 17, 2013 8:33:03 AM
Did you same folks hate it when Jerry had his sons working for the Panthers, or is it because its the Bobcats you have to hate the move?
Posted by: Larry Bird | Jul 17, 2013 8:34:11 AM
Not as ridiculous as Mayor Fox. Mayor Foz didn't own the city. Just thought he did. Still not a good move. Just when it felt like they were making progress. Now if they come out and say he was behind the Zeller move, I will feel better.
Posted by: Michael Hauth | Jul 17, 2013 8:42:44 AM
Has anyone watched Zeller play in the summer league? Albeit the summer league, he's shown skills that he did not display in college. He has got more than a post game with a good jump shot to go along with a pick and roll game. He can shoot a good percentage from the line and he can even rebound. Although early, this pick looks way better than past picks but that is not that hard to do.
Posted by: EP | Jul 17, 2013 8:58:43 AM
What, would you have preferred McLemore? In his first two summer league games he shot 22 percent from the field and 11 percent from three. He finally had a solid game last night, but his team lost again (3rd straight), and he had the worst +/- on his team (-19) in that game. Or would you have preferred Alex Because-One-Stress-Fracture-Is-Never-Enough Lin? Or maybe you wish Otto Porter slipped to us, so we could nurse his hamstring injury while MKG gives him pointers on jump shooting (that's right MKG is shooting more than 50% from the field compared to Porter's 30%).
Looks like Zeller was a good pick to me.

Happens all the time. Question? What.. Who else could MJ trust better than his own brother that he's known his whole entire life; shared the same room and clothes with?
Larry is perfect for the position. It doesn't require a lot of business accumen to perform the job.
Hell, look at Corporate America - the banks. It's about who you know and who you can trust!! Cause you have a lot of greedy, evil folks out there who will do anything cause of the love of money.
Jerry Richardson had both of his sons as execs with the Pathers Organization - why all the crying and pouting?
My wife and son are execs in my new small business start-up
Posted by: Bozack | Jul 17, 2013 9:19:44 AM
Cody Zeller displaying his outstanding skillset. Cody can be special like Dirk was in Dallas
MJ finally got a draft pick right...
Posted by: Bozack | Jul 17, 2013 9:32:30 AM
The crying and pouting is because it's Jordan, Bozack.
Some "fans" can't get past his success as an NBA player. The man brought us the Hornets name back and he bought the team from shrewd businessman Bob Johnson. Yet some still criticize and carry on when executives and other business people put their family members in positions throughout corporations all the time.
Posted by: D.W.G. | Jul 17, 2013 9:47:05 AM
It's moves like this that make it hard to take this franchise seriously, on a local or national level.
Jordan's next move will likely be hiring one of his sons to be the next Hugo. FOM have filled up just about every other position.
Posted by: Fred | Jul 17, 2013 9:48:07 AM
He owns the team...he can do what he damn well pleases with it...deal.
Posted by: eduardo | Jul 17, 2013 9:57:23 AM
this is NOWHERE near as bad as the cory higgins thing.
Posted by: charlottean | Jul 17, 2013 10:18:51 AM
@SAM ... dude that went WAY too far. Its ok to not like the decision, but his father was murdered and you want to make a joke about it ... what is wrong with you?
Posted by: Chris | Jul 17, 2013 10:29:36 AM
It is obviously a "made up position" since the "position" has been "open" since 2009. What difference does it make?
Posted by: Jeff Otah | Jul 17, 2013 10:48:24 AM
Does anyone know what is happening with Byron Mullens? Is he still on the team?
Posted by: Jon | Jul 17, 2013 10:51:56 AM
Yeah Sam... that qualifies you for sh!thead of the day!
Posted by: Me | Jul 17, 2013 11:07:50 AM
follow up the good coaching hires with this.
leave it to MJ to kill the momentum.
Posted by: big gulps | Jul 17, 2013 11:36:32 AM
byron mullens was not tendered and is an unrestricted free agent that has not signed with anyone yet.
lakers were rumored to be interested, but then signed kaman. my money would be on europe.
absolutely insane for a guy that at one point last year looked like he might be too expensive to keep.
Posted by: charlottean | Jul 17, 2013 12:02:28 PM
Time may prove me wrong but I would be very surprised if Larry is not fairly successful at this position.
Posted by: Mountainfanatic | Jul 17, 2013 12:11:20 PM
Mullens is a young kid with great size and skills, but his attitude is one of the worst I've ever seen. His demenaor in the game is horrible, sad to see such a great talent get wasted because of lack of maturity.
Rick, any news on Gerald Henderson?
Posted by: RobC | Jul 17, 2013 12:12:58 PM
i don't even know if it's lack of maturity as much as it's lack of balls. dude is completely ball-less. he plays like he's scared and he's wayyyyyyyyyy more talented than most of the guys in the league.
I thought he would become, what zeller already is. zeller has mad balls. he might be tri-balling.
they really need to get this hendo situation resolved. it's insane. if they're at 6 and he's at 8, it really doesn't matter. we have an insane amount of cap room next year that we HAVE to spend. overspending on a front loaded deal to henderson is absolutely meaningless. unless jordan is freaking out about having a near 70 million dollar payroll. he shouldn't, given that prokhorov is paying like half our payroll with the luxury tax distributions.
literally doesn't make a bit of difference until 2 years from now. (hence the front loading)
what does matter.....is letting another lottery pick leave. it's a horrible precedent. you're gonna start seeing all of our draft picks demanding trades kobe/eli manning style.

Danny Ainge hired his son to coach the Celtics D-League team, lets all make a big deal out of that too.... non-story, move on people

The MEGA SLURPERS are out in force with this announcement!
There's no crying and pouting going on here slurpers...but rather, gut busting laughing at the utter hilarity of this joke of a hire-- my eyes are watering from laughing so hard! Between guffaws the emotion I feel....is pity.
In case you Kitty Kat Slurpers were unaware, the Big Fat Kit Kat ultimately FIRED BOTH HIS SONS as the hires were FAILURES! Dang you slurpers are stupid!!
Posted by: NASTAR99 | Jul 17, 2013 3:41:19 PM
Some of you guys act like MJ signed the team over to his brother.lol. Hey Rick, Any word on Hendo?
Posted by: nucat | Jul 17, 2013 7:05:50 PM
Stay classy Rick! You made this into a big deal when it isn't. First it's an unimportant role. It has been open for how long? Every team owner has family working for them. Is it because this a black family or a famous family? I wonder.
Posted by: Anon | Jul 17, 2013 7:22:56 PM
NASTAR. Are you going to compare Jordan's brother to Fred Sanford as well? Go back into your hole you racist hate monger. What a scum bag you are.
Posted by: Thomas | Jul 17, 2013 8:18:08 PM
Hey it's NASTAR. If he is against it it must be a good move. Said they would not amnesty Thomas. Said they would not change to the Hornets. Wanted to keep Augustine. Ripped them for the Zeller pick. Not enough room to list them all. But he does seem to be very familiar with slurping. So he has that going for him.

Nastar is a slurper cause he comments on the bobcats all the time. ..quite the funny fellow
Posted by: freeze8575 | Jul 17, 2013 9:36:29 PM
when do we play again?
Mullens, if he was not hurt at the end of last season was just a total waste. That what it is starting to look like. Spoiled kid is what looks like to me. Its the guys that have "it" that waste it. SPOILED!
Posted by: David Stern has to go!! | Jul 17, 2013 10:49:53 PM
White folks been doing it for years. You mad cause its a black thing! Period
Posted by: Jim Crow | Jul 18, 2013 12:40:07 AM
Cory Higgins brought more to the table for the BOOBcats than Larry does.
Hey, why does bringing Fred Sanford into the conversation make you so mad Thomas? How could that possibly be construed as racist?
Well, one good thing about having Larry in the fold, if they want Kemba to scrimmage 1-on-1 with someone his own height they can roll Larry out.
Thomas is a Whitfield Slurper -- very rare breed!

But the jews do it all the time.

He's qualified as the next person . It's Mjs company . He's being groomed to be the Gm . Let him be . What family doesn't put family in the mix. I do it . So would you if you had some businesses . The haters don't .
Posted by: Iron man | Jul 18, 2013 9:41:12 AM
Charlotte doesn't deserve a team. Yall fans cry so damn much about everything. MJ don't do this or MJ don't do that. MJ is cheap but he signs Al, who is one of the best post payers in the league. MJ is too cheap to amnesty a player, but they did so with Thomas. MJ won't spend the money to get the Hornets name back, but they bringing the Hornets back! MJ owns the team. Let me repeat that again. He owns the team. It happens all the time in business. Who owns the Lakers? The Buss family. They all have high ranking positions. Most business owners hire family members. Get over it!! Why is this even a story by Bonnell? He's keeps the fire going with these types of articles. SMDH! Bobcats probably have the worst beat writer out of all the NBA teams. He never get's any exclusive information.
Posted by: Geemoney | Jul 18, 2013 12:00:29 PM
wow geeeeemoney is right he owns the team he can do as he pleases if you want things done a certain way you buy the team and do what you wish its kind stupid now all people do is complain about jordan. he could have kept the team name the bobcats no he is changing it cause its what the fans want. people act like he wants the cats to fail he is best player to lace shoes.... and competitive u think he wants to loose? come on people just think he wants to win more then we do but its not a overnight thing this isn't NBA 2k13 u cant just fix a team overnight. im a cats fan in cali. i see them twice a year once in sac an one in oakland. love it and nba league pass to watch. stop complaining about everything.
Posted by: reggie | Jul 18, 2013 3:40:06 PM
guess they were not real excited about showing Charlotte and Memphis. Typical.
Posted by: David Stern has to go!! | Jul 18, 2013 5:17:43 PM
Go F yourself NASTAR you racist a hole. I guess you could not find anyone other than Fred Sanford to compare him to. A racist is bad. A racist in denial is even worse. Need any white players to take your wonderlic test? You are garbage and a plain hater.
Posted by: Thomas | Jul 18, 2013 6:18:42 PM
i reiterate....if it weren't for jordan, we don't have this team. remember that the only other competing offer was from the group looking to move the team to st. louis.
so yeah, let's just ignore all of that and complain about his brother getting a promotion to a vacant position.
Posted by: charlottean | Jul 18, 2013 10:17:09 PM
Thomas, explain how a Fred Sanford reference is racist, I dare you. Do it, loser.
Separate from that, are you suggesting the Wonderlic Test is somehow racist in and of itself? You probably support no score keeping in kids sports don't you? Sure sign of a loser.
charlottean, the NBA was not going to approve a change of control that involved moving this joke, err team, out of Charlotte....so don't hold His Minimumness up as some sort of shining knight. In hindsight I suspect the NBA regrets approving Air Min, in fact, I know they do -- the guy is just a laughingstock, in fact he is THE laughingstock of the NBA. Joke.
Posted by: NASTAR99 | Jul 19, 2013 10:14:24 PM
they were too and you know it. they were going to require the lease either be honored or paid off but they absolutely were going to move the team given the lack of support. you think charlotte was going to put up a fight like sacramento did? no effing way. not even for the panthers. franchise was for sale and there was an offer that was accepted. johnson gave jordan first right of refusal. he exercised that. had he not......team was in st. louis. seattle in the alternative scenario. but not here.
look at the FACTUAL ticket sales, ad revenue, and coprorate sponsorship since jordan bought the team. you hate the guy, but he being who he is, WAS a good thing for the franchise business wise.
personnel wise remains to be seen but he DID do the right thing in agreeing to blow the roster up.
Posted by: charlottean | Jul 20, 2013 7:53:51 PM
Just like the New Orleans team, Stern was not going to approve a move of the Charlotte team, it's a fact, period.
I don't hate anyone, and certainly not MJ.
There is not one iota of "factual" data available on BOBcat sales results of any kind. If you can produce some I would love to see it.
