Bobcats' Al Jefferson NBA's East Player of the Month for March

Center Al Jefferson has become the first Charlotte Bobcat to be named an NBA Player of the Month.

Jefferson, the Bobcats’ leading scorer and an All-NBA candidate, averaged 24.7 points and 10.6 rebounds as the Bobcats went 9-7 in the games applicable for the month of March.

The span included a 38-point, 19-rebound game against the Miami Heat. Jefferson had nine games in March in which he reached a double-double in points and rebounds.

Oklahoma City Thunder forward Kevin Durant was named Western Conference Player of the Month for March after averaging 34.5 points, 6.7 rebounds and 5.9 assists.

Durant has won the Player of the Month award for the West four of a possible five times this season.

Seriously. Can this guy do much more for this team. People need to stop picking on his D and appreciate what he brings to the table.

who should the bobcats/hornets pick with their only pick (portland)this year?

Posted by: ttom tom | Apr 1, 2014 8:32:16 PM

Depending on where the pick was at, NASTAR99, would be the best selection; dude is obviously a genius at running a franchise; plus, the only job he's had in the past 20 years is driving mom to the store and social security office.

Posted by: the Dude | Apr 1, 2014 8:44:15 PM

Way to go Big Al -- well deserved.

Dude, since 2006 a monkey making random choices would have produced a track record superior to The W.O.A.T.

Wow, you are so obsess with mj. I hope his security is really tight in charlotte. It must have killed you inside to read about how all of his businesses are doing well. He made $90 million just last year. He bought this team for $175m and it could be worth a billion within a decade according to forbes. Reading all this success about a man you obsess over must really hurt. Poor thing!

Teams first ever player of the month. That is a nice accomplishment. Just turned 29. Very limited injury history and an old school game that he can play for quite some time. Congrats to Big Al!

Big Al is the man and it's great he is getting the recognition he deserves. Great SI story on Al here:

Possible reasons for NASTAR's hatred of MJ and the Bobcats.

1. MJ nailed his wife. Probability on that one is high.
2. Developed the brand Air NASTAR and never trademarked it.
3. Is one of the monsters from Space Jam.
4. Was caught on the kiss cam with his boyfriend at a a bobcats game.
5. Craig Ehlo was his favorite player growing up.
6. Is really Isaiah Thomas.
7. Works for Adidias.
8. Was upset when Hanes discontinued their tighty whitey product line.
9. Is related to Larry Brown.
10. Was fired by the MJ and or the Bobcats. Probability extremely high.

"What? I don't hate the Bobcats or MJ."

Guy has major physiological issues. I don't know how long he has been doing his thing, but it has been a long time. Has to be a medical diagnosis for that kind of compulsion.

At least he has Iron Man backing him up. Thats a relief.

Jefferson is a serious force on offense .He brought the Cats back to prominence in a huge way . His impact on offense hugely anchors the offense and all the relating schemes . The player of the month was well deserved . He averaged only one third of the assists the player of the month for the West did . The teams that go farther are the ones that have the most scoring from assited baskets . The two top USEAGE players on the Cats get most of their scores on one on one plays devoid of being assisted goals . This will be a problem in the playoffs unless it's revised . Move the ball ,have players move including cutting hard and get the ball to these players to get more scores off assisted goals . It's the only way . This style is much harder to shut down and breeds success in the playoffs much better .

Can we please resign this guy through the next millennium?

Posted by: Big Al | Apr 2, 2014 8:17:27 AM

@ Ironman:

The Western Conference Player of the month is Kevin Durant who 1. is a small forward, and therefore plays a different role in his team from a center and 2. is currently the favorite to be chosen MVP for this season.
Kevin Durant is seen by many as the best player in the world right now.

You can repeat your theory daily, but common sense should tell you that this - a column on a great distinction for the Bobcats' best player - is NOT the place for it. I know, no matter what the topic at hand is, you always restate the same theory. Still, here it's totally out of place.

Besides, the issue with your repetitive comments is not that they are wrong as such, it's that they are narrow minded and they leave out a lot; there is a lot more about the game of basketball than that.

You know, like Charles Barkley enjoys saying: "It's a simple game. You have five guys running on the floor, and all they need to do is put a ball in a basket!".
His funny way of drawing attention to the actual complexity of the game.

But thank you for your insight anyway.

This is a well deserved recognition for Al Jefferson. We already knew he's better than several All Stars, of 2014 as well as of previous years.
Big Al has a great season for the Cats. Congrats!

Posted by: Sandy | Apr 2, 2014 8:48:54 AM

Problem in the playoffs? Right genius. They will have a lot of problems in the playoffs. The won 21 freaking games last year and added one starter, who the f cares? You are not going from 21 wins to winning playoff games in one season. Start complaining next year when their goal should be to win a series or 2. Holy crap you are mentally disabled.

Posted by: Jason | Apr 2, 2014 9:38:27 AM

I add a different dimension each day on why team play is critical . But if you want to pigeonhole it , that's fine . Today is the first time I made the point that teams w lower assisted goals don't go as far . If you think that it matters much what position the high USEAGE player is playing and not passing from , I can't help you . It's probably why you didnt support your bald assertion at all if any. Don't tell me where the place is to make comments . This is about the playoffs . Jefferson has always gotten accolades but he's never gone anywhere much and neither have his teams . And the issues I point out are the reasons . If they deal w team play , which they do , I'm going to address them . If you don't like it, tough .

Posted by: Iron man | Apr 2, 2014 9:46:47 AM

Cdr played brilliantly down the stretch . He's trying to play some on ball defense . Neal and Henderson compliment each other the most . Neal has to play better on ball defense and Henderson must demand the ball and not defer shots . This combo is huge going forward .

The cdr and Mkg combo must step up . Mkg must take the ball in transition and demand it in half ct sets off curls inside for baby hooks . Post ups too and dribble drives .

Now to the pf duo . Just make the switch . McRoberts can anchor the second unit . The Cats have no choice bc he's getting relentlessly abused from wire to wire . I love his game but you can't hide he and Jefferson , the player of the month . Zeller is ready . We need desperately a help defender and shot blocker in the starting unit . Henderson , Mkg and Zeller are all quick and fast . They can play defense w the best of them . The Cats must get to 6 th at all costs . This is the only way . Keep Mkg on the floor by passing to him off cuts !!!!!. He and Henderson are a top 5 defending duo in the nba . It will be even better when you add Zeller . Now which one of you clowns wants to argue against this ? And you guys are getting slaughtered by Nastars . Lol. Keep calling him an idiot . Lol . Try refuting his claims w some reasonableness .

Posted by: Iron man | Apr 2, 2014 9:58:44 AM

I like Jeffrrson btw . I like Kemba too . I just want to get to the second round . I'm pulling hard for these guys . I disagree w Nastars as to Mj some but his picks and moves in the past have been ridiculed by more than Nastars . Jefferson is going to pass and play help defense . Kemba is going to facilitate and not miss teamates . The Cats will get out the first round after being the 6 th seed .

Congrats to Big Al. He has made this team a blast to watch this year and is by far our best player ever.
We are only one good SG or PF from being alegit semi-finals teams each year (in the east of course)

Same as always, Ironman: overstating some things, unable to understand and to see others.

You don't know that different positions entail different roles - though, there is also room for expressing each player's particular skills and creativity, so that not all players on the same position play (or, can be expected to play) the same way? You don't know that you expect different plays from a center than from a small forward - and therefore Big Al and K.D., unsurprisingly, have different games?
That's exactly what I meant by your narrow minded understanding of basic things about the game.

Even based on your own theory (which is, the very limited and skewed understanding of basketball theory you have), there you go with your overstating again: “the high USEAGE player is playing and not passing from”. Fortunately, he always has you, to lecture him on what to do: “Jefferson is going to pass”.

I already posted on this: of course Big Al is passing a lot, he’s the opposite of a “black hole”, although he is the top scoring option for this team. Of course many of his passes are "the pass before the assist" (hockey assists), or, the pass before a drive he enabled by drawing defenders on him.
I already said it, just because in basketball we don’t have stats for such passes, it doesn’t mean he doesn’t give them! But, it makes it easy for you to rant that he’s not doing it. False, but that’s you: either a player follows the ”game plan” in your mind, or you miss a lot of the good things that he does, and about how his playing is, directly and indirectly, helping teammates. This was explained in detail, by me and BEFORE me, but you ‘re stuck in your routine.

Only the assists are counted. They are far from showing all the good passes a player gives, but they are the best indicator of a player’s work as a facilitator for others. As I already posted, Big Al is 6th among NBA centers in this category, which is very good for the second best scoring center in the league.

Posted by: Sandy | Apr 2, 2014 11:32:32 AM

Listen . You can try to fool some of these people but you can't fool me or some others that know so save it . It's like the more a visitor ranted about not caring about stealing the silverware , the more we became afraid he might . You talked incessantly about the difference in positions as to getting assists . A PASS IS A PASS !!!!!!!!. Come on . Some of y'all have gotten beyond silly trying to refute anything I say just to post . Leave it alone . I'm coming solely from the fundamentals so you're wasting your time and looking dumber by the minute .

Posted by: Iron man | Apr 2, 2014 1:53:47 PM

And last time ... Who cares if Jefferson is 6 th or first ? He misses teammates all game when doubled . .. Until he started getting ripped for it . Lol. Jeffersons passing out of doubles the last game was excellent finally . I know he reads this . Lol. He must keep it up . Now his boy even w ten assists was out there misses guys last game . You can't win like this . You want to win , share the ball all the time . If you have a problem w it , so what . Each time anyone fails t move the ball , they're getting ripped . If it's repetitious tough . I want the Cats to win . You want to prematurely glorify them and slurp like Nastars says . Lol .

Posted by: Iron man | Apr 2, 2014 2:01:35 PM

Congrats Big Al!

Posted by: apauldds | Apr 2, 2014 2:18:20 PM

Who cares what position Al Jefferson plays ?!
Who cares his main job is to be the team's first scoring option, and also, open up the floor for teammates, and thus facilitate offensive plays, when he's posting up (by drawing up defenders to him)?!
Who cares he's actually a good passer (at least by center standards) ?!
Who cares about reality, when Ironman can tell you that all that matters is HIS advice to the team ?!

You write as if you should be coaching the team, or at least, as if you mentor the coach on how the offense should be run. That's the pose you're taking.
Yesterday, you made it clear you think that coach Clifford should take note of your "mentoring", and implement it.
Today, you're saying that it's thanks to your "ripping" him for not going by your rules, that Big Al is, once in a long while, doing the right thing.

You don't get much crazier than this.
Believe it or not, Ironman, I'm really amused by your loony posts. You live in a world of your own delusions.

You do the same thing for many years already, but you're certainly getting worse. You're posting your repetitive rants more and more frequently,
and it's only now that you're getting to the point of not only posing as a mentor, lecturing the coach and players,
but also, of embracing now the ultimate delusion, that they actually pay any attention to your crap, and that they are either listening to you (which is very much needed for this team in order to win), or they're doomed to fail, much to the slurpers' sorrow.

And here is my sin: "You want to prematurely glorify them". This one is not a crazy statement, it's only plainly stupid.
Ask Nastar, he can tell how many critical comments I posted through the years. I said it before, this includes this season too, although now I see the positives prevailing. Anyway, except for relentless negativity, you and Nastar have very, very little in common; your comments and his are very different in nature.

I am critical when needed; I have no problem with very harsh criticism. I did it many times, when it made sense.

What I didn't, don't and will not do, is to 1. ignore or play down positives when they actually start prevailing, and overemphasize negativity instead, and 2. (more important) I certainly don't believe in lecturing a very good and experienced coach like Steve Clifford on how to run the team, or, "rip" the team's two best players, and then also imagine they will listen to a fan's rants and follow his advice. This is what makes your posts insane - which is quite different from just being critical.

I actually posted several critical comments in past seasons on Dunlap's and Sam Vincent's methods (defensive and offensive schemes and rotations too), but I never got into the delusional attitude of a would-be "mentor" or adviser, like you're doing.

{For anyone who still thinks highly of Dunlap, no need to get upset for my last paragraph: I always agreed, and still agree, that Dunlap was better than Sam Vincent. Better, but not NBA head coach caliber).

- - -

Whatever Ironman, keep doing what you're doing; after all, you're the best in the world at YOUR schtick! As for me, I'll just chuckle.

Posted by: Sandy | Apr 2, 2014 3:46:13 PM

the flaw with people being hard on dunlap and not on clifford is that they didn't even remotely have the same rosters to work with. clifford benefited from a lot of the things dunlap did with kemba and gerald and mkg and biz, but he benefited more by swapping diop, thomas, warrick, mullens, etc. for mcroberts, zeller, jefferson, tolliver.

the guy went 21-61 in his first year as head coach with a roster that was the youngest in the league in age per minutes played. a lot of the schemes that people knock, weren't even given the chance to be executed properly with the proper personnel.

that dude knew basketball. and he was smart. and he would have adapted more with time.

clifford is absolutely a solid coach but giving him credit as better based on this year's results is severely flawed logic. he's done a good job, but so did dunlap given the hand he was dealt.

geralds post is CLASSIC.

craig ehlo was definitely his favorite player. might even be his dad. that's hilarious. someone please look up any former bobcats employees with the last name "ehlo". I think we might have him figured out.

and you meant isiah, the little guy balling out for the kings has no hate for jordan that i'm aware of.

Posted by: charlottean | Apr 2, 2014 4:04:18 PM

Lol. You not once addressed the difference between a sf or center passing the ball out of a double team . I'm done w you . Let me tell what's delusional . That not one player a family member , friend , associate , staff member or anyone ever reads any articles submitted by the beat writer online . Or look at comments below . Ever . You , to make a point , distorted what I said as to what the staff should do , but this is the norm here . If you don't know bb , just tell a joke or try to tell one . Lol.

Posted by: Iron man | Apr 2, 2014 5:55:24 PM

Holy crap. This dude thinks Clifford and big Al are listening to him. Oh my god. He is crazier than I thought. Nut job.

Posted by: Jason | Apr 2, 2014 7:03:03 PM

You guys are the crazy ones. Everybody knows that the Cats lost at Orlando because the wifi was down at the arena and Cliff couldn't get access to the CO's site to read Iron Man's posts for the game plan.

Posted by: voice of reason | Apr 2, 2014 9:01:27 PM

NEWSFLASH! DROP WHAT YOU ARE DOING BECAUSE THIS IS MIND-BLOWING NEWS! KEVIN DURANT HAS BETTER USEAGE NUMBERS THAN AL JEFFERSON!

Wow - who would've thunk that KD is a better basketball player than Big Al. I hear there is some guy named James that is pretty good too. Just sayin;...

Posted by: voice of reason | Apr 2, 2014 9:05:14 PM

HAHAAHAHAHAHA!!!! @ voice of reason. Good one.

Posted by: Will | Apr 3, 2014 12:26:51 AM

Clowns , dummies , dimwits always turn to cynicism and gross exaggerations when they're devoid of any credible reply or are too stupid to reconcile the issues at hand . So typical here . What's most typical is it's the same usual suspects who have never posted anything of bb substance , by reason that they don't know any . Lol. At least come up w some good jokes .

Posted by: Iron man | Apr 3, 2014 8:41:32 AM

"...physiological..."

LOL.... Since you probably can't afford to buy one you should trot down to the library, check out a dictionary, and put it to use.

As for His Minimumness, your observations relative to his moral compass are spot on.
