Gimme a break

One thing I have never understood: why some people don’t take all their vacation or personal time. I need time to recharge now and then. My work would surely suffer if I didn’t take some down time.

But lots of people don’t feel the same way, according to a study released today by Hudson Highland Group, a staffing and recruiting firm.

Among workers who get vacation time, more than half – 56 percent – do not use all of it, and 30 percent say they take less than half their days off. Additionally, one in five workers say they plan to get away only for long weekends this year, rather than take a full vacation.

I wonder about workers who pass on their vacation days. Are their jobs more important? Are they more ambitious? Or are they martyrs or slaves to the workplace? Tell me what you think and how you spend your vacation days. Post your comments here or send me an e-mail at abaldwin@charlotteobserver.com.
