Vacancies to trickle down to Panthers?

With head coaching jobs open in Detroit, New Orleans, Green Bay, Kansas City, Houston, St. Louis and Minnesota, it’s natural to wonder if that could affect the Carolina Panthers coaching staff.

The answer is probably not. Generally, teams look at coordinators for head coaching prospects. For Carolina, that’s defensive coordinator Mike Trgovac and offensive coordinator Dan Henning.

Trgovac is the more marketable of the two and could be a head coach someday. Trgovac became coordinator in 2003 and has directed a solid defense for three seasons. He’s well-respected in league circles, but probably needs another year or two of good performances by the defense to get his name on short lists.

Henning has been a head coach twice before and isn’t interested in doing it again. He’s content where he’s at and most of the teams that are looking for head coaches are rebuilding and want younger coaches.

As long as the Panthers are in the playoffs, their coaches can’t interview elsewhere. But there could be some movement on the staff once the season is over. Although it’s unlikely any Carolina assistants will be viewed as head coaching candidates, there could be a trickle-down effect from what happens around the rest of the league. There is the chance that some assistants, such as running backs coach Jim Skipper and defensive backs coach Rod Perry, could be seen as potential coordinators.

HOPE FOR MORGAN: The Panthers are hoping middle linebacker Dan Morgan will be ready for Sunday’s playoff game against the New York Giants. Morgan missed the regular-season finale with a shoulder injury.

But team officials said placing Morgan on the injured reserve list to create a roster spot for the post-season wasn't considered. There’s a chance Morgan can be ready for Sunday and the Panthers would prefer to have Morgan if he’s anywhere close to being healthy.

You know, it's been kind of uncommented upon that Chris Draft has played really well in the place of Dan Morgan. I'd rather have Draft play in the Giants game, and, if he's getting the job done, give Morgan a little bit more rest for the next (theoretical) game.

I agree with you Diggity. If you look at when Draft has played in Morgans place the defense was outstanding. They had a swagger, emotion, they played with confidence for 4qts! They were fired up! He brings something to the defense that elevates everyones play! I am not taking anything from Morgan. I just think Draft brings more to the table when it really counts. Just look at the two Atlanta games.
