Gamble remains a starter - for now

A popular topic from e-mailers this week has been the Panthers secondary. There’s a theory that cornerback Chris Gamble should be the one benched instead of Ken Lucas. All I can say is, I agree, but it’s not going to happen.

At least not yet, anyway. Gamble’s a former first-round pick. Although he hasn’t played any better than Lucas, there might be some behind-the-scenes reasoning to this decision. The veteran Lucas might be better equipped to deal with the demotion. He might even be motivated to play better and get his spot back.

Gamble might not be able to react the same way. The Panthers want him to try to play through his slump. Benching him might end the possibility he’ll ever reach his potential.

Here’s the breakdown of what’s happened on Jake Delhomme’s incomplete passes this season, according to STATS:

Passes Attempted Complete Total Incomplete

367 218 149

Number / Pct of Incomp / Pct of Overall Attempts

Pass Dropped 18 / 12.1 / 4.9

Poor Throw 55 / 36.9 / 15.0

Pass Defensed 32 / 21.5 / 8.7

Pass Hit at Line 15 /10.1 / 4.1

Other 20 13.4 5.4

Intercepted 9 / 6.0 / 2.5

Here are the latest numbers on how often Panthers’ receivers have been the targets of passes and how many they’ve dropped, according to STATS:

Steve Smith 102 targets, 9 drops

Keyshawn Johnson 97 targets, 2 drops

Carter 37 targets, 1 drops

Colbert 12 targets, 0 drops

Maybe Lucas is the one being demoted because his struggles have been injury-related.

I disagree with the Panthers. I don't like the idea of messing with a person's ego or anything like that. Give me a break, if you are not playing well, sit-down. Prove to me that you can play again, and you will be put in. That's what I would do.

I've never questioned fox, but if continues to start gamble, wow, i dunno what i'd do. Lucas makes game changing interceptions and deflections while gamble gets hail mary interceptions before halftime. Marshall is hands down a better corner than gamble and should start, it doesnt make any sense. The panthers should consider themselves lucky everytime a qb doesnt throw the ball to gamble's side. Also they dont want to hurt a guy's ego? ahah are you serious? EGO? If the guy is that fragile he should not be in the NFL, MAN UP, YOU SUCK, SIT DOWN until you can learn to use that god given freaky athleticism!

Yeah, let's bench Gamble-heck let's trade him. He may be in a better place like all the rest of the players that are gone. Does anyone remember Ricky Manning? And he is with a team that, etc....

After the EAgles game, I'm thinking we may need to bring in more than one new d-back. It looked to be one of our worst games yet back there.

doesen't matter how he plays somewhere else, with US he sucks. We cant keep a player who's blowing assignment's because he will be better someone else. Did you see the route reggie brown ran, he was burned on a go route. he's supposed to be an athlete right? jeez. i can play corner if all they want him to do is get burned

"Our whole thing is about winning games, and our decision on who plays is based on who's playing the best," Fox said.

In Fox's on words, this means that Chris Gamble is playing the best. And that means that Fox is blind.

Gamble needs to be absolutely benched. Lucas deserves his starting spot back. He wasn't playing bad and was making game changing plays. Marshall has played outstandingly and deserves the other starting spot opposite Lucas. Do not let Gamble play corner or return punts. He's terrible at both. Let DeAngelo return punts as well as kickoffs. The guy is a machine. And put Gamble waivers and say good riddens.
