Solid safety now available

Maybe this is what the Panthers have been waiting for:

Hey, it makes a lot of sense. A healthy Donovin Darius is probably better than any safety on the Panthers' roster. But Darius is coming off a broken leg … and he still might be better than any safety on the roster.

I just saw this story on espn.com and immediately thought about the Panthers signing him. Then I came to Charlotte.com and you had this info in your blog. What do you think the chances are of actually signing him? Thanks

Spectacular point...although I've seen it as an ankle rather than a leg. But basically, Darius is Minter from back when Minter was Minter. Fearsome hitter in coverage, great on run support, and a good head for the game. The one place I could see the Panthers wanting to pull away would be his reputation for being a dirty hitter and player. He's been fined several times by the NFL for late or overly aggressive hits.

OMG - if the Panthers don't pick DD up immediately it would be tragic. DD can plug the hole at safety for at least another year or two, enough time to groom others/acquire/draft a long term solution. Despite overtures of being 'dirty', DD is of solid character and would actually enhance chemistry on the team.

Being a huge fan of the 'Cuse, Darius would be a sweet signing for the Panthers. Hopefully they reach out to his agent ASAP. It makes too much sense. GO 'CUSE and GO PANTHERS!!!

It makes a lot of sense for them to try and sign him they lookin for a good safety to play beside minter if we sign him our defense will be pretty much solidified so they need to hurry up

I agree with all of you I think hands down Donovin Daruis was the safety the Panthers was waiting and hoping for.I have another idea the Panthers should see can they work out a trade to get Sean Taylor from the Redskins. Here my feeling on what we can do to get Sean Taylor and maybe more, I think we should trade are 3rd pick plus Kris Jenkins,Nate Salley,Drew Carter,Naja Diggs,Michel Gaines to the Washington D.C Redskins for Sean Taylor ,Santana Moss,Chris Cooley, So now the Panthers fix there problem for next year safety issue and we have a great solid #2 WR and TE to pick up the offense third down conversion and total offense.I hope that the Carolina Panther think try to make a deal like this and if they need a LB Al Wilson/Lavar Arrigton isn't bad player to go after.

sign him, sign him, sign him, sign him, sign him....oh yeah...SIGN HIM. this is exactly the type of player we need back there, the guy is a leader and hits hard enough to loosen dental work. if we do this, we will then be talked about as an elite d, rather than a talented one that has a chink in the armor. this guy would be a difference maker, a better signing than marlon mcree was...who cares how much it costs...we have the money and plenty of fat to cut.

Taylor has more character issues. Washington would deal him because they got a similarly talented player in Landry. I like the idea of Smitty and Moss though. Who's faster than those two guys? And there's no way they give up Cooley. That guys productive as all get out, and low maintenance. He's perfect for us, but they'll throw money at him to keep him I think.

Here's something to think about before everybody falls all over themselves for Darius: did he ever fully recover from his torn ACL of '05? He did it early that season, so one would imagine he would have been able to come back fully by some point last year, but produced subpar stats and was said to look very slow and old. Again, I like what he did as a player, but let's like a guy because of his game RIGHT NOW, not his name or his stats from 5 years ago.

Before everyone gets too excited, Darius is only 6 months younger than Minter, is coming off of two significant injuries the past two years, and plays the same strong safety position as Minter. We still would have a HUGE whole at free safety even if we sign him and there are no guarantees he'll be much of an upgrade over Minter. All of that being said, the Panthers do use their two safety positions somewhat interchangeably so they could conceivably start both Minter and Darius, but they would be poor in pass protection given their lack of speed and ability to intercept the ball. One positive with Darius is that he's coming from a similar defense. Turgo has essentially continued the use of Del Rio's defensive schemes since his depature for Jacksonville.

He is to old, why go down that road, i was hoping the panthers go young, what is he worth? 2million maybe, no way losers, he is slow and plays the same postion as minter, whom they should cut too. thanks, go panthers

Im totally w/ the Sean Taylor trade. Has anyone ever thought that he has character issues because of his supporting cast? I think we could work w/ that guy and he is one hell of a player! Darius on the other hand is too old and injury prone! I say Jenkins for Taylor!

They'll never give up Sean Taylor (a top-50 NFL player who will only get better) for Kris Jenkins (a fat, poorly-conditioned underachiever who can only get worse after his "Pro Bowl" season). Give up this pipe dream, people...it will only bring you pain and suffering.

Maybe Roberth Griffith should get a look at safety by the Panthers. Upstanding veteran who has proven his smarts and skills over the years, while backing it up with production on the field. It would be nice to pick him up with league's minimum salary for a player with his experience. He would be a player you could count on to be in the right place during a play and to be a sure tackler.

Should have signed Deon Grant when he was available. Darius is too slow and lacks quickness in coverage to make plays. He plays to not get beat deep like Minter and gives up too many plays in front of him.

Posted by: Joe | Jun 15, 2007 7:43:39 PM

I've heard that before (Shawn Williams). PASS!!!!!!!!!!! Procton is right, the skins will never give up S. Taylor. Donovan Darius would be a great pickup for Carolina. He would provide leadership and knowledge for N. Salley. Why not give it a shot coming off his injuries they will get him at a good price. This would fill every hole on the D. I have not heard anything that he has lost a step. If the panthers don't do it, will be cause Fox's good buddy Jack Del Rio told him it would not be a good choice. So I have faith in whatever they do. and maybe just maybe N. Salley's ready to play some ball!!!

Maybe the relationship between Darius and Del Rio is the reason we should pick this guy up. Jack Del Rio was our defensive coordinator, so I'm sure his defense is based off some of the things he used while under John Fox's wing. And yes, I agree with wowo that if Del Rio doesn't give a rave review on Darius (which shouldn't happen because Darius was getting all kinds of positive comments during their press conference). I think Darius is a pretty good character guy despite this "dirty" hit label. At least he hasn't killed his pregnant girlfriend or pushed his wife into a wall a la Carruth or Chris Terry ...

Robert Griffith and Donovan Darius are both older and slower players, but we could use one of them, or both, in a rotation to keep them fresh during the season and late in games. If we sign Darius, then he and Minter could split time in a rotation with Salley. Then they'll be more rested and fresh for our December run for the playoffs. I think the Panthers have a different outlook, though. The gameplan is to keep the game close and control the clock, so if we get out in front early, the opposition won't get too many chances to go deep. I think our best move would be to make Lucas or Gamble a safety on plays when we only have 2 CBs on the field. Then bring the guy back to the CB position on nickel packages with a rotation of Darius, Minter and Salley.

I truly feel that the Panthers have more of a need for a pass defending safety, but Donovan Darius is too much talent to pass up. He can be the replacement for Minter once he retires. Plus, he could continue to bring a toughness to the defense. He is NOT dirty, but just plays the safety position like they used to be taught to play it in the past. One of his main responsibilities is seperating receivers from the ball, and sometimes that requires a vicious hit. That's not dirty.

I love how stupid most of you are. We have Dan Morgan who gets hurt every year and you all fully expect him to play one play and then be done for the rest of the year. But DD who gets hurt just as much is supposed to come in and save our season guys I think you are reaching a bit??

Posted by: Billy | Jun 16, 2007 1:07:38 PM

I was reading the comments and i saw the one about that trade to get sean taylor, santana moss, and chris cooley that will be the best for the panthers but that is not going to happen unless the redskins are willing to give up 2 of there better offensive players and there best defensive player i would really want to see that happen but i dont think it is.Also donovin darius would be great!! the panthers could still get a good couple of years from him and once minter leaves we would still have a veteran safety to help the young one's

Billy, you're a moron.

Darius hasn't missed anywhere near the number of games as Morgan has ...
