Casserly still believes in Carr

I got to spend time with former Houston Texans general manager Charlie Casserly at lunch today as he makes his training camp rounds to prepare for another season as a television analyst. Casserly, you might remember, is the man who drafted quarterback David Carr with the first overall pick in 2002.

Things never worked out in Houston the way Carr and Casserly imagined, largely because the Texans never could assemble a decent offensive line, but Casserly still sings Carr’s praises.

"I still firmly believe David Carr can be a winning quarterback in the NFL," Casserly said, moments after visiting with Carr.

Casserly said he believes the change of scenery will turn around Carr’s career and he thinks the quarterback made a smart move by taking a backup role with an established team.

"I think sometimes it’s good to go to a ballclub where they’re a good team, they’re a contender and you don’t have to play right away," Casserly said. "There weren’t many playoff teams looking for starting quarterbacks this year. Are you going to go with a team that’s short on players? Or do you go to a team where you may have to be the No. 2 for too long? The beauty of this system is free agency. You don’t have to stay there forever. You can regroup and move on. I thought it would be good for him to come to a place where he’d get good coaching, experience winning again and, then, you make a decision at the end of your two-year contract."

Regardless of how it turned out here in Houston, there are still plenty of people/fans that believed in Carr and were very sad when he left. It will be hard to watch this year without him on the field. He was always a fine young man with loads of character. It may not have worked out like everyone would have liked, but he always handled the situation with dignity. God bless you David Carr and may you find peace and happiness wherever your career leads you.
Still a fan!

I live in houston and i am a huge Texan Fan since their inception. I have followed David's career since fresno st.I have said it before and will say it again, David was not the problem in Houston. Houston could have propelled David's career by drafting reggie bush. DC didnt play great while here but neither would Peyton or Carson have if they were under the same circumstances.Other teams just pass rushed david regardless of the circumstances with no fear of the running game. No QB will succeed like that because there was no time to throw. It seemed like he held the ball because his first option, Andre Johnson was always double covered and there was no time to find a 2nd option. Some of us fans understand how football is played and know it wasnt DC's fault. We dont know if DC will be a good QB just like we didnt know the answer to that question when he was drafted. The problem is he has never been given a chance to answer that Question. There are some in Houston, as myself, who support david and know he endured a tough situation here. He was always a class guy and never badmouthed other fans, coaches, or teammates. Carolina is very fortunate to get him. Carolina is now my 2nd favorite team behind the Texans, Go David!!

I checked David out in Training Camp last week. I appreciate Jake, and I hope he does well; but I REALLY liked watching David and his whacky side-arm. The dude is totally accurate. Somehow, though, I can't see him saying, "show me the chicken!" Maybe, "Pass me some guacamole."

Casserly is also the same "idiot" who drafted the Defensive Rookie of the Year in the second round. What moves have you made as a GM, wd?

Maybe I have a reason to watch the panthers and root for them, can we say CARRolina?

Good luck with the human "Carr-wreck", you'll need it! Ihope you have Dr. Phil on staff when you find David in his customery fetal position or running for "glory", when he thinks the out of bounds marker is the goal line!

We wish him well and feel the change of scenery will do him and the Texans good.

Mr. Procton, I believe it's been reported, that Casserly was on the 1st pick (Mario) but, with his status of "lame duck", Kubes and staff picked the other's. Thus, Charlie "Catastrophy" did not bring Ryans to Houston.

Casserly might not be a gerat judge of talent. The Panthers will have to face Reggie Bush twice a year because of that guy. Vince Young would have been a safe choice as well. Make him 0 for 3 in my book.

Aha...convenient, Xetouh...Casserly was responsible to the #1 pick who underachieved due to injury, but not for the rest of them. I suppose I really believe that a front office would trust the most important pick to one player and the throw-ins to other people. Ya think it would make a little more sense to work it the OTHER way?

David Carr had more talent around him at Fresno state than he did at Houston. Logan Mankins, who now protects Tom Brady, was his Left tackle. Bernard Berrian, who starts for the Chicago Bears, was one of his receivers. Carr had a better offensive line at Fresno state than he did at Houston, and as a consequence, got the crap beat out of him for 5 years. There is no way anyone would have done any better than him considering the lack of talent on the Houston team at that time. I can't wait for Matt Schaub to get the snot knocked out of him since he is supposed to be the savior in Houston now. It's going to take Carr a whole year just to let his body heal after the beating he took in Houston. Hopefully, Jake will get it done, and Carr can rest. His time as a started will come soon enough, but for now, I would just like to see him get over the nightmare that was in Houston.

Thank You, Houston!! We here in CARRolina appreciate a quality QB and are very happy to welcome David to Charlotte. Maybe when/if we get to play the Texans, David can show the staff there that they let a great guy and leader get away. Jake now has a great back-up and friend and we in "Pantherland" are happy. GO PANTHERS!!
