Minter Thinking About Retirement

0803minter SPARTANBURG - Safety Mike Minter just dropped a bit of a bomb.

Minter told the media he's at least considering retiring before this season. Minter already had said this would be his last season.

But that might not even happen. Minter said he's having second thoughts about playing another season. He said he'll use camp practices to see how his body feels. If he's not physically ready, Minter said he may retire.

Minter said he and coach John Fox have talked about the situation and Minter will make a decision before the end of training camp.

Gosh, I really do hope Mike stays for one more season. He's just about my favorite Panther, and my one-and-only jersey is No. 30. He's such a great locker room guy.

Minter can play the run but I think he hurts the team when in coverage, our defense needs more turnovers and minter wasnt making the plays last season. Regardless he is one of the greatest panthers ever. He will be missed but I think Salley and Harris are well-rounded and will play both the run and pass.

He is a stand up guy, both on and off the field and has been a cornerstone of our franchise (my only jersey as well). Whenever he chooses to shut it down, I think we should retire #30 and encourage him to stay involved in some capacity!

YES good guy. YES he's probably good in the locker room. YES he's been great for the franchise and city. BUT let's face it, he's lost 3 steps from his prime, his HUGE hits that he was known for are long gone, and he is a liability on defense. Thank you Mike for your time, but that time probably has expired. We need speed, he doesn't have it anymore, so I think this would be good news to all Panthers fans who really knows whats going on out there.

It looked like he was retired last year. Good guy....yes....past his prime yes...but The Panthers SHOULD have addressed the defensive backfield in the draft.

Another poor off season from the Panthers front office might hurt us in the long run if Mike retires

What they say in an article on espn.com is that he is contemplating retirement because of his knees... At his age, if he is having knee problems, regardless of whether he retires or not, the Panthers better get another experienced safety. Cause who knows how long he would hold up during the season, or how much his performance will degrade from last year. He is a great guy, ALWAYS was out there signing autograghs during training camp, but business is business.

I'll say this. Minter is at or near the end of his career. He may not be Hall of Fame material, but he is one of the classiest guys to step into a Panthers uniform. I hope he goes out on his own terms and he's comfortable with his decision. Thanks for the memories Mike - you'll always be a fan favorite!

Any thoughts on him coaching? He knows this D as well as Turgo and he has the locker room credibility.

If he decides to hang it up...I just want to say that I, as well as the majority of Panther fans really appreciate what he has done for this organization. He gives his all and he leads by example and he is just a fine person. I wish him the best. Thanks Mike!

P.S. I still believe he got ripped off by never going to the probowl. Put Minter in John Lynch's place on those Bucs teams and it's Minter going to those probowls. It's a shame he didn't get the national recognition he deserved.

MIKE, "say it isn't so". You're a class act and besides, I've already purchased tickets to a game this year, in part to see you play one last time. Give us one more year, please!!!

If Minter does hang'em up, they need to introduce him before the Home Opener so everyone can give him one hell of an ovation and goodbye!

May God bless you and your family I know you will do whats right for them. Listen to the still small voice Mike.may God be with you in whatever you do.

I would say Mike knows the defense better than Turgo. How come Turgo doesn't get as much out of the defense as Jack Del Rio did. He is very inconsistent in his calls. With the talent we have we should be in the top of all defense standings. I think we should have replaced Turgo and Hennings.
What I don't understand is, John Fox got his reputation and chance to be a head coach because of his defensive coaching skills. Why does he not take charge of the defense. We see other head coaches calling plays from the sideline. I respect Fox but I hope to see some energy from him this year, if not I doubt he will be here next year. If he is not involved in the defense schemes, I hope he will stay out of the offensive play calling as well. Let's get more liberal with things, then after we get a double digit lead, pound, dink and dunk. Go Panthers I am Ready For Some Football.
