Observations from Friday's practice:
Third quarterback Brett Basanez continues to, very quietly, have a nice camp. Not saying he’s ready to challenge for a starting job because that’s not going to happen. But you can picture this guy developing into a quality backup, like a Billy Volek type, someday. Rookie receiver Dwayne Jarrett got some work with the first team Friday morning. Consider that a sign of things to come. The team brought Jarrett along slowly early in camp, but things are about to speed up because the coaches want him to claim the No. 2 receiver spot by the start of the season. One of the more entertaining moments of camp came Friday morning on a play where defensive end Mike Rucker chased scrambling quarterback Jake Delhomme. Rucker repeatedly said, "I’m going to get you Jake’’. Delhomme kept running, turned the corner and dashed into the end zone. Rucker then yelled, "I pulled up on you’’. Delhomme responded by lightly flipping the ball at Rucker, who flipped the ball back at Delhomme.

Was there watching that play. Rucker sure didn't look like a guy that was just coming back from tearing his acl on that play. He must be coming along very well because he sure was moving really well.

this has nothing to do with ruck but i cant figure out why hurney doesnt just suck it up and give beason his deal like the rest of the guys where he was drafted...SUCK IT UP...we need linebackers who know whats going on...

After seeing Basanez play numerous times in the Big 10, I wonder if the comment about his being destined to be a "quality backup" is appropriate. Some guys have that "it factor" that makes them a winner, in spite of the measurables.
We've all seen them, the guys who seem able to, in crunch time, gather themselves and come up with whatever it takes, and (if they are QBs) to get their teammates to do the same. They may not be at their best on the practice field, but when the adrenaline is way up.... watch them take over.
Until proven otherwise, I'll think of Brett as potentially being in this category, rather than as just a serviceable fill-in. He may not get a chance to show it until "circumstances" come together such that he has a shot at taking the helm in live action, but if that happens watch for a few eyes to get opened.

Consider Drew Carter a "sign of things to come"!! No way with this guys speed is Jarrett taking the No.2 position!!
