Who's getting a monster contract extension?

There’s a rumor making the rounds in NFL circles that a defensive player is about to get a monstrous contract extension.

The natural reaction was it must be Julius Peppers. It’s not. Ran that by some sources in the organization and the word is there’s nothing much happening on that front, although the Panthers do want to extend Peppers at some point.

We’ve heard this monster deal will be in the same ballpark as the six-year $72 million deal given to Indianapolis’ Dwight Freeney.

So if it’s not Peppers, who’s about to get a big payday?

The guess here: New Orleans defensive end Will Smith.

Every day that goes by where the Panthers put off signing Peppers just makes it more and more expensive. Extend Peppers, and stop trying to be a bunch of trend setters and give Beason the bonus you promised him before yanking it off the table.
Marty Hurney is worthless. Can we get Bill Polian back?

I agree with Ted on both counts. I believe Peppers will have a breakout year this year, and his price will go through the roof.

And on Beason, once you show the offer, he has to believe that he can get it if he holds out. This stalemate is hurting both him and the panthers, but I have to believe that it is hurting the Panthers more with a big need at his position.

Peppers will get the biggest defensive contract in football no matter when he extends. He's expensive but very worth it.

In my opinion, Will Smith has done nothing to warrant such a contract. He had a great year last year yes, and a pretty good rookie year, but I would wait another year or two before awarding Smith with a rich contract like that. Just some food for thought.

Julius and Freeney have almost identical stats so it makes since that they would get paid the same amount but Smith hasn't done enough to deserve that kind of money
