Delhomme: It's a one-game thing

In the locker room Monday, a day after Houston buried the Panthers 34-21, quarterback Jake Delhomme was asked if he was worried that Carolina was in danger of becoming a one-weapon offense (Steve Smith), with opponents figuring if they can stop Smith, they can pretty much stop the Panthers.

“No, I’m not worried about it,” Delhomme said. “I think that game just kind of got out of hand pretty quick; I think it was a one-game deal. I truly believe we can run the ball effectively and we’ll try to get back to doing that this week.

“I really feel like we’re a rhythm team; when we can run and pass it and just kind of flowing like that. We did that early-on in the game; we got 14 points right away. We’d run, we’d throw, we’d run, we’d throw. And maybe we didn’t establish it in the second quarter; we just didn’t get it done.”

Carolina ran for 186 yards in the St. Louis opener but managed just 66 against Houston.

“When you jump on someone 14-0 you want to step on somebody, and that’s what was disappointing (against Houston),” Delhomme. “We need to keep grinding, we need to keep that edge. (Coach John) Fox would say, ‘Keep that stinger.’ We need that.”

You are a rythym QB, so it starts with you. Jake has always been inconcestent, there for the Offense has as well.

It is time for a change at QB, stats are like bikinis they dont tell the whole story.

You have been here long enough to know YOU HAVE to hit Kolbert on the post and not underthrow it for 6. and you have to hit Drew in stride and not overthrow him, your a superbowl and pro bowl QB.

Sorry, some may not like it, but I think Carr needs to play now.

What will happen if DeAngelo and the Falcons scheme up Smitty and Jake cant throw to him and then starts to force stuff like he did on the Dunta Robinson INT! Just to try and get Smitty the ball.

Jake= the whle problem NO! but same old same old man. inconcestent.

BigKahuna,
Carr is not the answer, he didn't look comfortable at all during the preaseason in the pocket and I think our season will definately do down the drain if he steps in. Yes, Jake underthrew Colbert BUT Colbert still should have made that catch and all the others he dropped. I no longer get made at Colbert for his drops, I simply blame our sad coaching staff. Jake is a good enough QB to lead us back to the playoffs and superbowl. It is not Jake's fault that Foxy doesn't have another reciever that will catch. I no longer blame Jake for locking onto Smith only, whenever he throws to Colbert of Carter they never come through (and don't let Carter one game perfomance fool you).

We need coaching changes!!!!!!!!!It is a shame they are wasting some of the talent we will see in Carolina.

Posted by: Catfan | Sep 18, 2007 1:20:29 PM

The Texans will tell you Carr ain't the answer... They are a much better team w/out him

Posted by: RJR | Sep 18, 2007 1:28:22 PM

Anyone who would criticize Jake for the last two games is a moron. I'm sorry but there is no other way to put it. Our main offensive problem, this year and the last couple of years, is that the O-line cannot consistently run block well enough. They looked good against the Rams but that was probably the result of playing one of the weaker run defenses in the league. Get us some decent run-blocking and the offense would look a hell of a lot better.

Posted by: Jerad H. | Sep 18, 2007 1:43:15 PM

How you gonna hate on somebody with well over a 100 passer rating? 6 touchdowns, 1 interception. C'mon. How you gonna blame him for trying to get the ball to Smith every time. Can Colbert or Carter make a play? I salute him for not forcing passes as much as he did last year, too. THE LINE HAS TO DO A BETTER JOB. That's where the lack of consistency is evident.

Posted by: Ron | Sep 18, 2007 1:51:34 PM

Yep, here we go again. It is everyone else's fault, it is never that idiot Delhomme's. Last year in Philly, it was Keyshawn's fault, not Delhomme's. As long as the Delhomme homers are around it will never be his fault. People make fun of Falcons fans saying they are Vick fans and not team fans, same thing here in Carolina, too many HOMER DELHOMME fans and not fans of the Panthers.

Posted by: Delhomme is an idiot | Sep 18, 2007 1:56:29 PM

^^^^What do you suggest idiot, play the broken down Carr???

Posted by: RJR | Sep 18, 2007 2:00:44 PM

We are the laughing stock of the NFC South! If only we had a great coach like they do in Tampa. The Bucs are the class of the division and will win the NFC.

Delhomme chucks the ball up for grabs.

Posted by: Tom | Sep 18, 2007 2:01:07 PM

Blaming Delhomme is like saying, "Well Steve Smith didn't win us the game last week we need to bench him for Jarett."

Delhomme is not the problem right now (remember how well we did last year without him?) I swear some of you guys turning into Jet fans.

Posted by: Dan | Sep 18, 2007 2:23:00 PM

you can't blame the offense duh. they did not give up 31 unanswered points to the texans. the defense is the one who needs the blame for this game. they could not stop ap state if the played us instead houston.

I'd suggest you Jake bashers go check NFL.COM and look at the QB Stats. Right now, Jake is #5 in the WHOLE NFL... oh, and Peyton Manning is #8.

Now, am I saying that Jake is a better QB than Peyton? No, not necessarily. BUT and this is a big BUT, all indications are that he's good enough to be our starter.

This was a defensive loss. Jake (and Smith too) are showing how big they are by taking blame offensively for a defensive unit that gave up 34 unanswered points. In baseball, this would be called a blown save.

I almost thought it was a pre-season game... the defensive starters played the first two series and then took the rest of the night off!

I'm sick and tired of hearing people try to excuse Julius Pepper's lack of effectiveness (currently ranked 48th among defensive lineman) on the fact that he is drawing double teams... for those who didn't notice, so was the left DE for the Texans when he blew threw both offensive lineman to sack Jake!

Peppers has only 5 solo tackles and 1 assist in the first two games. Jake has 6 TD passes for only 1 Int. If you think Carr would be any better with this supporting cast (Steve Smith excluded) you've spent too much time tailgating!

If I was John Fox, next week I'd start all the backups at every position EXCEPT for Smith and Delhomme. Just one play or two on each side of the ball, just to make the point that they embarrassed themselves last week.

Posted by: John | Sep 18, 2007 3:03:43 PM

Jake has played well so far this season. DAVID CARR IS NOT THE ANSWER!!!! Carr was given chance after chance in Houston and was proven to be ineffective.

These are our most pressing issues:

1) The offense consists of Steve Smith and Jake Delhomme. (The line is mediocre, there is no playmaker outside of Smitty)

2) The defense is soft. They seem to give up 1st downs every single time the opposing team has a 3rd down. The personnel is there...the scheme and coordinator (Trgovac) are obviously ineffective.

3) I love John Fox and I appreciate everything he has done for this team. We wouldn't be where we are today without him. He has proven, however, that he does not have what it takes to take us over the top...therefore, I reluctantly support a change at the Head Coach position. Some of Fox's decisions (such as having Goings return kickoffs) just don't make any sense. Fox isn't the entire problem, however. Marty Hurney has continually ignored the weak spots on this team. He has made NO EFFORT to improve the O-line. I have been saying for years that this team needs a better O-line to make an impact. The O-line is the backbone of any offense. Hurney does not seem to realize this. I am also at a loss as to why he hasn't brought in a competent 2nd receiver. I just do not understand how he can justify going forward with Colbert and Carter in that spot for the 2nd season in 3 years. I do not know all the details behind the move but I lost all respect fo Hurney when he cut Keyshawn. Keyshawn could at least catch the ball. He may not have been spectacular but at least he drew some of the attention away from Steve Smith. If this season doesn't turn around quickly, I feel a wholesale change in management is necessary to take this team to the next level before our small window of opportunity shuts for good.

GO PANTHERS!!!

Posted by: OG | Sep 18, 2007 3:29:13 PM

I am not one to praise Jake frequently but he was not the problem this weekend. The fault is with the coaches, they clearly did not prepare the team at all and we failed in every facet of the game as a result. Fox continues to fail miserably as a motivator, he should have been grabbing facemasks on the sidelines and kicking someone's money maker, name rhymes with Dolbert, for dropping 4 passed thrown to the mitts. instead he stands there nonchalantly and does nothing but let the clock run down on 4th and 1 when we should be going for it. He led a bad draft, he had a bad gameplan, he is a terrible motivator, and he has done nothing to own up to it. He needs to be asking about Coughlin's job for next season.

What's all this rhythm stuff? Somebody tryin' to get pregnant?

Posted by: wayne | Sep 18, 2007 4:19:33 PM

LISTEN UP ALL YOU FOX HATERS!!! Not everybody has to be Bill Cowher to be a successful coach in the NFL. Bill Walsh, Tony Dungy, Andy Reid and yes, even George Seifert have Superbowl victories under their belt. None of them act like Cowher. Heck, their not even as vocal as John Fox is! Fox gets vocal(yells) at all the right times and places. That being said, once again, I have to agree. It's time Fox moves on.... because the fans want it (mostly) and it seems because he has lost control of his team/players. In my opinion. He's still a great coach though and will go on to develope another successful franchise elswhere, if HE chooses to.

Posted by: SYRPIS | Sep 18, 2007 5:15:10 PM

Correction, Andy Reid has the multiple confeference appearances and victory... still--- not many can make that claim.

Posted by: SYRPIS | Sep 18, 2007 5:16:22 PM

Oh yeah! Mark Levy to. Was a great coach, and would barely raise his voice (to the officials mostly).

Posted by: SYRPIS | Sep 18, 2007 5:17:12 PM

Im glad almost everyone here is smart enough to see what really happened. Its not Jakes fault. You guys keep on saying we need a new qb. What happened last year with Weinke and before Jake came to the Panthers???

The reason we lost is because our DC was scared of Andre Johnson. We played both safeties back in coverage the whole day. Andre still caught two tds but it was under the coverage and one over Morgan. That pretty much leaves the tightends and fullbacks open all day with dumpoffs from Schaub. It also allowed the Texans to run wild against us with both safeties back in coverage.

Posted by: laocoholic | Sep 18, 2007 5:48:14 PM

a lot of you had good points on but if i was to blame anyone. it would be a team as a whole. offense couldnt move the ball. defense cou ldnt stop the ball. the coaches had a bad game plan. so i blame the panthers as a whole.

Posted by: steve | Sep 18, 2007 5:55:50 PM

THE PANTHERS ARE JUST AS GOOD AS ANY OTHER TEAM AT SCORING POINTS. I MEAN THE LAST FIVE YEARS ITS BEEN HIGH SCORING OFFENSES THAT HAVE WON THE SUPER BOWL ETC.. COLTS,PATS. ALL THE PANTHERS NEED TO DO IS TWEEK THE DEFENSE. WE HAVE THE OFFENSE. THE FIRST TWO GAMES NUMBERS DONT LIE. SMITH 4 TDS CARTER 2 TDS. JAKE IS RANKED 5TH AND IS PLAYING SMART. HES THROWING THE BALL VERY ACCURATE AND HAS ONE INTERCEPTION THAT WASNT HIS FAULT SMITH TURNED TO THE OUTSIDE INSTEAD OF INSIDE AND LET THE CORNER GET THE POSITION ON HIM.FOSTER, WILLIAMS , AND GOINGS SLIPPERY FINGERS LOST US THAT GAME. AS FOR JAKE AGAIN HES PLAYING JUST LIKE HE DID IN THE SUPERBOWL. STOP THE TURN OVERS AND LET THE DEFENSE GET BROKE IN AND THE PANTHERS WILL BE ON THE ROLL AGAIN. AND TO ALL THE BASHERS THE BEARS ARE 1-1 BUT NOBODY IS COUNTING THEM OUT, THE CHARGERS LOOKED BAD STILL HIGHLY RANKED, INDY BARELY WON LAST SUNDAY AND THEY ARE FAVORITES TO WIN THE SUPER BOWL. OH YEAH PRIVATE SEAT OWNERS QUIT CRYING SOMETIME I LISTEN TO THE PANTHERS ON THE RADIO IM JUST AS BIG A FAN.

Posted by: rutherford county res | Sep 18, 2007 6:04:28 PM

You guys could have it worse, you could have Chris Simms as QB! I hear when the Panthers play the Bucs, the loser is going to get a trophy with a chin on it and be declared Bill Cowher Bowl Champion!
This one's for you Tom, Coach Fox is horrible but still better than Gruden!

Posted by: DR | Sep 18, 2007 6:06:50 PM

Steve is right. Jake is playin exactly the same as our superbowl runs. Jake, SS, and Kasay are the only panthers to play consistently through that time period. Jake did, though, have a hiccup last year, but overall his numbers were still solid and consistent to what he normally delivers.

Posted by: laocoholic | Sep 18, 2007 6:29:16 PM

^^^^I mean Rutherford county res is right with his comment instead of steve.

Also, Keary colbert is a joke. He dropped quite a few passes which left us 3rd and long. What can you do when you get 2 yards running on first down. Then get a drop ball on 2nd down. That leaves you third and long with Steve Smith double covered.

Posted by: laocoholic | Sep 18, 2007 6:31:45 PM

Thou not a Jake fan, I will say this loss is not his fault. It comes down to a few other areas:
1) Colbert should be released ASAP, let Jarrett play. He was drafted to replace Keyshawn let's see what happns.
2) The "D" is soft, no fire or one wants to get in the face of anyone else. Still can not stop anyone on 3rd down. A change a "D" coordinator may help.
3) Goings returning kickoffs? Why? Thou a wonderful team player there has to be someone on the team more capable for this.
4) Poor personnel desicions.
Just my thoughts.

Posted by: merlose | Sep 18, 2007 7:39:41 PM

Our Special Teams lost that one. A fumble in the in-zone for a TD.

Also having a couple of other fumbles and sacks is not good. Bridges will be starting this week.

Posted by: patrick Terry | Sep 18, 2007 9:41:01 PM

I have to agree...what games are you guys watching? i saw more mistakes by our recievers than i did Jake...I'm not saying he played perfect...no one has. But geez get off the bench Delhomme trip. He's here to stay, if you don't like it, be a Falcon's fan, they have WAY better QBs than we do...

Posted by: Clayton Ballas | Sep 19, 2007 12:19:07 AM

...and not to mention...our DEFENSE and SPECIAL TEAMS should have NEVER...EVER let Houston back in the game to begin with...this was not a game that was lost by the offense. it just seems everyone wants to blame Jake...he's actually doing great this year. instead of critising our players that are playing good, maybe we should start praising them. and not that i am a huge fan of Delhomme...but didn't we just get beat by the team Carr just left? and now they are 2-0? yeah...i'm thinking that says something about our backup QB...lets not rush to judgement in week 3...ESPECIALLY against one of the two players that have actually shown up to play for 2 weeks straight...

Posted by: Clayton Ballas | Sep 19, 2007 12:24:39 AM

I understand Jake can be inconsistent and make costly mistakes, but so far this season he's been playing great.

You can't pin any of what happened on him sunday. The running game struggled because they stopped going to it once they were behind, that's a coaching issue. They didn't get the play in and off in time on a crucial 4th and one that couldn't swung the momentum, that's coaching. Drew and Keary had several dropped passes between the two and finally a muffed kick and DeShaun's fumble didn't help the cause.

I'm not saying Jake is the perfect QB but he's certainly better at this point than David Carr. I understand Houston's line has improved from the past few seasons, but the rest of the team is exactly what Carr had to work with and he didn't get it done there like Schaub has so far.

The loss this week was a TEAM loss just as the win last week was a TEAM win. I have a feeling the Panthers will be much more like that first week team we saw for the remainder of the season

Posted by: Patrick | Sep 19, 2007 12:30:13 AM

this has been the same team team for 3 or 4 years no new faces on offense. you would think the panthers learned something after losing to seattle in the nfc champioship game....get more play makers on offense how aboput draft more than 1 wr or running back in the draft. they draft 2 or 3 offensive and defensive linemen every year so you would think that one or the other would be good by now. the fron 7 on defense for carolina is overrated.
they have not had a good draft sense siefert

Panthers fans quit whining. This is the biggest chicken little fan base in the NFL. Trust me the sky isn't falling. This was one game out of 16. The Panthers have 14 left. Chances are if the Panthers stay healthy we will make the playoffs. The South is completely wide open for the taking. Have a little faith that the Panthers will eventually take the division. Chalk this one up to a Murphy's law game where everything that could go wrong did go wrong.

Those of you that criticize John Fox need to shut your traps and thank the football Gods that he is in Charlotte. Fox has done more than any other coach in our teams history over the last 5 years. He also completely took over our joke of a franchise (1-15) and turned it into a contender. I would rather have him than Cowher or anyone else not named Belichek or Dungy.

Jake also is not the problem. Those of you who can't see that should start watching Soccer or some other sport besides football. He is off to one of the best starts in the NFL. He has a 100+ QB rating so far & the only guy that has a better rating so far is Brady.

The problem is simple. We have to have a more consistent ground game. Everything starts and ends there. If you only throw up 66 yards in an NFL game chances are you are going to lose. I think we kept forcing the run this past week when we didn't need to. The short passing game was effective. I didn't think we ran enough screens and draws to help out the O-Line. Davidson is still pretty new to being a coordinator. Give him time.

Trgovac on the other hand is a problem. I have no idea what game he was watching the other day. If the front 4 isn't getting pressure you have to dial up more blitzes. Schaub had all day to throw so he picked us apart just like any NFL QB will if given all day to throw. I think he needs to trust our corners to cover man to man more. They aren't very good zone defenders but all 3 are good enough athletically to match up in man.

Either way have a little faith Panthers fans. There are still 14 left. Quit crying.

Posted by: eric | Sep 19, 2007 5:08:54 AM

Let's put it this way. The Panthers are really not any better than they were last year! I am a huge Panthers fan, but I am being realistic. Until they start playing to win instead of not to lose, we will be mediocre. I believe the linebackers and even the secondary will be alright, but our defensive line is OVERRATED! Most good defenses have their line constantly putting pressure on QB's. Moorehead has our only sack. WOW!! If the Falcons game on Sunday is close, than we are in for a long season. With Bridges coming back the running game should be better. Give Willieams the rock, isn't that what we drafted him for? We better run the ball on Sunday. Let's hope, for everyone's sake!

Posted by: JLiv | Sep 19, 2007 5:29:50 AM

The only one-time fluke associated with the Panthers is that steroid-fueled Superbowl run a few years back.

They would have sucked that season if half the team hadn't been hyped up on steroids, they've sucked since then, and they REALLY suck this season.

Face it rednecks, Richardson can't build a winner.

Think Keyshawn would be useful right about now?

How about Will Witherspoon?

Richardson doesn't know how to build a winner, he just knows how to fool you brainwashed rednecks into thinking he's got a winning organization, hahahaha.

Posted by: Will | Sep 19, 2007 5:51:43 AM

All you people blaming Jake are an embarrassment to Panther fans.

He is playing extremely well, if he stayed on pace he'd be breaking records. But of course this isn't good enough for Panther fans.

Here's some advice go learn about football and stop blaming everything on the QB because you only watch the ball. Also watch some other QBs in the NFL play, that will give you some perspective.

Posted by: Cat | Sep 19, 2007 6:00:51 AM

When the Panthers win everyones happy, but when they lose it is the END OF THE WORLD...This is ridiculous this is the NFL everyone is good. The margin for error is very minimal. Will I think you are a moron It is evident that Keyshawn messed up team chemistry completely last year. I also don't feel Smitty is to fond of him! Spoon is a good linebacker we probably should have kept him and let Morgan go.(only cause of injury's) Witherspoon is NOT tearing it up in STL though. The Panthers will be fine they will fight for a division title this year and hopefully more.... After the panthers win next week everyone knocking them will be singing a different tune.

Posted by: wowo | Sep 19, 2007 6:46:37 AM

I love to hear the start David Carr talk. How about giving the Texans a little credit? Maybe we were just better on Sunday. OK, so your defense was the cover 2? And Carr was helping Delhomme with the secrets of the Houston offense? There's your answer folks. Carr couldn't beat a cover 2 to save his grandmother in the 5 years that he started. He was so terrified in the pocket that he couldn't look past the pass rushers to see the middle of the field. So the plan was probably, "ok we'll go cover 2 because the Texans can't do a thing with it. It took 3 quarters for your organization to realize that Carr was on your sideline now and the #8 in the backfield was now a real QB. By the time they put together a new gameplan, it was too late and we'd already scored a team record amount of points on you. Don't sweat it. You're still in the weaker half of the league and you'll know better next time.
BTW, for those who would like to see Carr. If he plays, expect your o-line to suddenly look pop warner. He holds the ball soooooo long, no line in the NFL can protect as long as he needs.

Posted by: Joshua | Sep 19, 2007 7:50:43 AM

You know what messes up team chemistry?

Being part of a loser organization.

6-10.

Anyone, and i mean anyone who seriously blames Jake for that loss shouldn't be allowed to watch football. You dumb SOB's blame Jake for having a 100 QB rating this season? Was it his fault DeShaun can't fight his way out of a paper bag? Was it Jake's fault Colbert and Carter combined for at least 5 BIG drops?
You morons need to shut the f&^% up and stop whining. Long live Jake and the true Panther faitful.

Posted by: Death to Jake Haters | Sep 19, 2007 12:02:17 PM

Everyone here,

You all realize what you all sound like, right?

Last year in Houston, there were many problems. David Carr led the early part of the season with a high passer rating. Its overrated. Fans would bicker that it was the offensive line. Can we get a left tackle? Can someone block at least?

Weird, Houston only had one wide reciever as well. Andre Johnson.

No! It was the Defense! (Fans would say) After the first 3 games, the Houston Texans were in the Top 10 on defense of all the teams in the NFL. Little known fact. The key word is "after".

The running game started to crank up by mid season. Ron Dayne had one of his best years since Wisconsin.

The Texans finished 6-10 and were the laughingstock of the NFL. They passed on Vince and Reggie, right? For who again?

What I am doing is prefacing.

It all comes down to the Quarterback. No matter what your team, what ranking your defense is, or who your coach might be. Strike that, game planning has alot to do with the outcome but I am sure you understand my drift.

Regardless:

The Quarterback is the heart and soul of your team. If your QB is confident in his decisions, is a hero when down, and a leader when confronted; the rest of the team follows.

Look at Indy. Peyton Manning. Was their defense feared last year? Not until the playoffs. Can anyone name me 1 starting Linebacker without looking it up this year? They sure have looked pretty good havent they? Ranked 13th so far. Its still early.

What about the secondary? Besides that of Bob Sanders, who else leads that secondary that you can name off the top of your head?

This is just an example.

Hmm... you might say, "Well look at Da Bears!" They have always had a great defense. Did you know that the Bears still go to the playoffs without Rex Grossman at the helm? Kyle Orton took them to the playoffs while Rex was hurt.

My answer? Rex Grossman looks inconsistent, the team looks inconsistent.

If Brian Urlacher could play both offense and defense, I am sure he would have lead them to the promised land by now.

Tom Brady, you might say. Okay, who else in the freggin world could make Jabar Gaffney (Oh, my! Another Houston Texan that was cut) look like Randy Moss for a couple weeks? The Pats cheated! Sure, they may have looked at someone elses test but if you believe that had everything to do with their winning ways, Clinton "didnt have sexual relations with that woman".

Jake's time may have come and gone. Drew Bledsoe was once an all-time great, looking at numbers. He sure didnt look too great in the Dallas offense last year.

Back to Houston. They traded a 2nd rounder this year and a 2nd round draft choice next year for a career 0-2 starter. Man he looked pretty darned good against a top 8 defense.

Dont kid yourselves, The Black Kitties wont look this bad all year long. They just dont have the proper leadership.

Oh, and by the way, David Carr is already damaged goods. After his 3rd season in Houston, he will never be the same.

The O-Line wasnt blocking.

No! No! He didnt have but one reciever.

Wait! We couldnt get the running game going.

The defense is terrible!

That dern Coach!

Now, does that sound familiar?

My Best Wishes,

Dan in League City, Texas.

david carr is not the future of the carolina panthers. they did not let him go in houston for nothing. tha fact that the panthers had him and harrington targeted in the draft scares me. the panthers just cant or dont know to pick a good first round draft pick
