Salley: I might have rushed my recovery

If you wonder why safety Nate Salley’s knee sprain seemed endless before he was placed on injured reserve earlier this week, it’s because it was actually more than that. He has a badly pulled or possibly torn posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), and although it felt better at times, it never progressed beyond a certain point. He stopped in the locker room Thursday and spoke about it.

"We thought I could get back a little sooner; it was feeling pretty good," he said. "I think I might have rushed it a little bit. It got set back twice and then I end up here."

Salley, projected as a starter at the beginning of training camp as he began his second year with the team, had to sit and watch as the Panthers brought three more safeties in.

Surgery hasn’t been ruled out, but he said he plans to give it a month or so more to see if the knee gets better through rehabilitation.

"Surgery is like a last resort type of deal," he said. "Hopefully I won’t have to go that route."

Should surgery be necessary, Salley said he would be ready for next season.

"We have plenty of time," he said.

Well, two more years to prove himself, and it looks like he may get that chance with the curren roster in place. But what is up with all these injury prone players?? Do we need more help with the team medics? Is it strength and conditioning??? Finally, why can't we just get injury setllements on these guys after their second season edning injury? I mean, if I have a player who was out all last year with an injury and he injures himself again... you better believe he's a gonner and someone else gets signed immediately to take his place. Alas, I don't wait until week 2 to see if he is going to make some kind of unpressidented recovery and then take any joe schmoe off of the street and plug him into the empty slot, hoping that he can somehow paly at the NFL level!!! I mean, come on already!!

This is just Panthers reason why he want start this year. I don't care how much better Nate Salley has gotten. If he started last year, he may very well be the worst Safety starting in the NFL. This is just PR to help justify dumb Panthers decisions. You guys better win this weekend or the shit will hit the fan.

galloway is going to BURN the panthers secondary when carolina plays tampa. the corners cant cover and the safeties are no help

These guys are breaking their own legs trying to cover guys. We try to mimic the great Tampa defense "Cover 2", but no one can play it like they can. Many teams try but they just don't have the knowledge nor the personnel.

Look, the cover 2 needs a great under tackle, WLB and SS (ala Sapp, Brooks and Lynch. Now Hovan, Brooks (Cato June) and Philips). Other than an aging Jenkins, who do we have that even comes close? Although, Jenkins can NEVER NEVER come in the same category as a future hall of famer Warren Sapp.

Let's stop trying to copy that great defense in Tampa and try to have our own identity. We should practice with the local pop warner league first. Maybe we can have some success with the Quadriplegic Flag Football League. Maybe not!!

Panthers fans....all Bucs fans aren't like this. Don't worry, many of us are humbled by our team's lack of success since the Lombardi year. I think the Bucs are headed up again, but, am not ready to crown them champions again.

See ya in Charlotte for the first one.

The real reason I hate the Panthers is because I work for Bobcat Johnson and the unnamed arena in town better know as Charlotte Coliseum number 3.

I can't stand for the Panthers to be owned by a first class owner. People want to be associated with Jerry Richardson. They run from my boss Bobcat Johnson. It also bothers me that PSL holders paid for BOA Stadium and we had to trick tax payers to get our unnamed arena built.

We only hire black folk here at absentee owned Bobcat Johnson Central. It also makes me mad that people show up for the panther games and do not come to the Bobcat games. We are down to 125 season ticket holders. The panthers have over 60,000. No company will buy rights to have their name on our unnamed arena.

So in closing the reason I act like an idiot on all of these boards is because I am so jealous.

This is one position we've not payed attention to for a while because of Mike Minter, he was such fixture at strong safety for man years. Salley was a hopeful replacement but as you can see, he can't make it to the field to show what he has. I would love to had some speed back there. Not to say Harris or Cooper aren't fast but just a little more speed would help. I hope we can solve this problem before the season is out, But then again Cooper and Harris are holding it in the road for us, so far.

Obviously, I didn't write that last comment. I only talk football. And point out the sad state of our team right now. We are perpetual losers and we need a new direction.

Who will get Cowher next year? Tampa or Carolina? Nice job Fox, cut Keyshawn to make room for Jarret and oh yeah, there's a thing called training camp to evaluate your players and apparently you don't like Jarrett. Keary Colbert might be cross eyed, but thats better than Jarrettt. If Stevie Wonder tried out, would he be higher up on the depth chart than Jarretttt? Is Jarrettttt not taking the HGH that is required to be on this team? Or is Jarretttttt just a wasted pick? Jarrettttttt has to better than what you got on the field.

i agree DR why draft a player that early if u wont let him dress, this is why i hate our team sometimes this is why i think we can be in the bottom half or our divison some of our highschools here can beat our panthers which is ver sad.

So Salley can wait. He knows its too late as he's walking on byeeee. His career slides away, but dont look back in anger, dont look back in anger, i heard him say

Again, someone is using my name to disparage my comments. But the truth be told, we are a team in desperation. I can't see winning anymore than three games this year. That's because we play the Falcons twice and we squeaked one by the first game.

Damoine Lewis do it man. D-Line.

Dang, two games and one loss and you are throwing the team under the bus. Some of you guys must be some hard core fans...undefeated or sucks is your moto. The last game a rookie had a bad game (Kalil which affects the running and passing game), a veteran always having a bad game (Colbert, what else is new). Lighten up. there were alot of good teams which lost that week. Switch to decaf and watch the season...
