Shelton a mystery to Falcons coach
The Panthers made running back Eric Shelton a second-round pick out of Louisville in 2005, counting on him to become the big back to replace Stephen Davis as the anchor in the team’s power running game.
For their money, the Panthers got eight regular-season carries from Shelton before cutting him loose at the end of training camp this season. He gained 23 yards, an average of 2.9 a carry.
Today, Atlanta coach Bobby Petrino, who coached Shelton in college, was asked if he was surprised Shelton hasn’t made it in the NFL.
"Eric was a very good player for me at Louisville," Petrino said. "Unfortunately, I didn’t get to watch any of him in the NFL and really have no idea how he played or what he did."
Had he expected Shelton to be a success in the league?
"That’s a hard one because there were a lot of guys I thought would play on Sunday and didn’t; there’s a few guys that I didn’t think could and ended up doing real well. I think there’s a lot of guys on the street with the ability to learn, who have the heart and dedication to (make) it. A lot of times, that makes the difference."
Shelton remains a free agent, at least for now. Atlanta hasn’t called.

The only mystery should be why this crew of idiots drafted him that high in the first place.
Oh, that's right...they suck, they're idiots when it comes to football, and they're still riding the fumes of a fluke Superbowl run which never would have happened if half the team hadn't been on steroids.

you idiots, just read the Rock Hill Herald blog and you would know that the Bucs are interesting in signing Shelton; I doubt it has anything to do with his playing ability but more about his ability to help them scout the Panthers.

Will, you're a utter complete moron! They were never on steroids you idiot! They were on HGH, completely different and they prescriptions for it! So before you say something that stupid, get your facts straight!

Will,
Why don't you post your comments on another website like idiots.com
You have no clue what you are talking about. You are probably a Falcons fan anyway.

I think the Panthers gave up on Shelton too early. If the Panthers were trying to make a roster move relative to his incapacity to become a featured back and a lack of knowledge of the offensive scheme, bad move! And I think that's what the organization envisioned. He would have been best utilized in situational snaps, for example, 3rd and short, to augment the running game with a full back package. He has a big body with explosiveness, and the coaching staff failed to think outside of the box to match his talents albeit limited to the overall offensive concept. And who knows, with a little PT, you could catch the defense by suprise by passing to a fullback who could do some damage downfield if he catches it. Just my thoughts on it.

Willie is just a little wuss who has never been to a game. Should have been in that movie "Clueless" as a male cheer girl. You go willie wuss, you go girl.

Your nickname is DR.
Are you the DR that gave all those Panthers those steroids which caused them to be much better than the usual mediocre team they normally are? You sure seem to know a lot about the subject...
And why get mad at me?
I didn't draft the idiot. I didn't stink it up on the field last week.
You brainwashed rednecks need to snap out of it and direct your anger to the right place.

I'm sorry but Shelton got more than enough chances to earn spots on this team and he just didn't do it. He would've/should've been cut his first year but I think that would have been too embarassing to cut your 2nd round pick right out of the gate. He seem like a strong runner but that where it ends. He gets out on the field and drops his pants...runs right into a wall. He's got the build to be a good back in the NFL for sure but it just wasn't there for us. He's not a slasher type runner anyway, which seems to be what we're going to given the new blocking scheme. Maybe he'll pick up in tampa and get a spot.

Shelton refused to use HGH, thats why he was cut.
Posted by: DR | Sep 20, 2007 9:18:18 AM
I wouldn't be surprised if that is the reason why he was cut.
Lord knows the Panthers love retaining their crappy players -- that's why they've won more than they lost in only 3 of 12 seasons -- so if they let a crappy player go, there's got to be more than meets the eye.
I bet you're right DR.

Jesus Christ, who lets these idiots come into this place? Talk about a lack of intelligence/maturity.

G.M., how dare you use my name in vain. I command you to go to the nearest Christian church and ask for forgiveness.
The reason the Panthers are bad is because I make them that way. They don't score TDs and point at me as much as other teams. I mean, c'mon, i'm watching football on Sunday's, not doing that crap other people do.
Posted by: Jesus Christ | Sep 20, 2007 3:08:29 PM
But Jesus...
Scoring TDs and pointing at you requires.............scoring TDs.
That's something the Panthers don't do.
