Where's Weinke?

In case you're wondering, and you probably are after watching David Carr's first few drives, Chris Weinke's still in Charlotte. Co-worker Tom Sorensen saw him in a grocery store a week or two ago. That part's true and confirmed. Also, Sorensen's not certain, but there was a guy stocking shelves who looked a lot like Jeff Lewis. - PAT YASINSKAS

Sorry Pat, I'd rather become a soccer fan then have Wienke back. That may be a possibility the way we look right now though.

Posted by: jason | Sep 30, 2007 2:01:29 PM

plan and simple our defense SUCK!!!! it makes me sick to see tampa go through us like this, our linebackers, safeties, and our d-line is weak. we're not going to the playoffs we need to have a good draft and get a new defense. cause we suck...

Posted by: broderick | Sep 30, 2007 2:33:48 PM

I have ALWAYS been a Fox supporter. But its time for him to go. This team should be ashamed of their performance, or lack thereof, and that is Fox's job.

Posted by: Tony F'ing Rowell | Sep 30, 2007 2:45:17 PM

On a high note, Baker should be representing the NFC in the pro-bowl. At least we can say that.

Posted by: jason | Sep 30, 2007 2:51:48 PM

The Panthers DEFENSE...SUCKS..! Getting rid of Coach Fox might be in our best interest. Also getting a good defensive line would help a lot. We definitely can not forget a real backup quarterback. We need a solid guy to backup Delhomme, that is if Delhomme is still around after next season.

Posted by: Houston | Sep 30, 2007 2:52:19 PM

how about this for a title, Where's Smith?

Posted by: joe | Sep 30, 2007 3:05:00 PM

Would you un-educated fans stop griping? Remember, a punt is a good play. We lead 7-2
Baker RULES!!!!!!

Posted by: Juan | Sep 30, 2007 3:08:48 PM

i just dont get the offense looks lost, i love fox too but he needs to do something especially with bill cowher out there, and we should of got rid of the defensive coordinator last year too. the defense has been getting worst and worst. can i say will witherspoon should be back there..dumb move, can i say keyshawn johnson..

Posted by: broderick | Sep 30, 2007 3:13:25 PM

2 psl's for sale. S-O-S. Get behind and quit. Maybe we are the suckers...we bought the team.

Posted by: gg | Sep 30, 2007 3:18:28 PM

"Meshawn" Keyshawn was the greatest transaction in Panther's history... when they cut his a** that is. Weinke would be an upgrade, and it wouldn't be the first time the team got someone off of the street to fill a uniform. Moreover, it's about all Richardson is willing to spend on some FA "talent." I know it is still early, but this team is toast.

Posted by: SYRPIS | Sep 30, 2007 3:19:32 PM

I wish that the team could know how sick the performances this season have made the fans. I dont care who we have on our team...I just want to win. It doesnt seem like our guys even care until its too late. We got lucky that we were playing a terrible falcons team last week. This week we played a quality team and got smacked because our defense is terrible. What the heck is Mike Trgovac doing? I am one of many who believe that that he has only been good in the past because of our player personel. Now when we dont have a leader in the secondary his defense is terrible. A good coordinator woud scheme better and switch things up a little bit. I hate calling for people's jobs especially this early in the season but he has done nothing to deserve the position that he is in. He is terrible!

Posted by: MH | Sep 30, 2007 3:26:29 PM

This is one of the worst games I have ever seen the Panthers play.
I too have always been a Fox supporter but the team looks dead. It's the coaches job to fire up the team. I haven't seen that happen for a long time now.
The defense flat out stinks.
I can excuse the offense somewhat with Carr having his first start here. Now's when the D should be stepping up their game.

Posted by: Juan | Sep 30, 2007 3:32:43 PM

This team has no heart and no desire. Where is the intestity and fire to prove your the best? David Carr is terrible and that is why no one else picked him up. He can't read defenses. Hey Carr I have some inside information, the bucs always run a cover 2!! You don't need to tape defensive signals to know that. I hope Jake is back soon because at least he brings some emotion when he is on the field.

Posted by: Matt | Sep 30, 2007 3:40:19 PM

We waited until late in the third quarter to begin blitzing with Marshall? My other issue goes with the Kris Jenkins comment, these guys are not playing with any fire on defense and the offense still acts like they are afraid to attack the defense. I'm still waiting for the real Panthers to show up.

Posted by: timmer_ax | Sep 30, 2007 3:54:58 PM

You guys forgot to bring it.

I tried to tell you this Bucs team is much better than you're used to seeing. Next time, bring some football smack or did you know you were going to get rolled and not want to admit it?

Good luck 'til we meet again.

Posted by: Mr.T | Sep 30, 2007 3:57:47 PM

We started the Carr... time to park the Carr.

Posted by: ugghhh | Sep 30, 2007 3:58:11 PM

And I am fairly sick of seeing Colbert smile after catching a pass down by 20 with 3 minutes to go.

Catch the ball when it matters, clown.

Posted by: ugghhh | Sep 30, 2007 4:01:16 PM

Of course there was a holding penatly; however, looks like Carter can make a spactacular catch when the game is out of hand as well.

Again, how about pulling one in when it matters?

Posted by: ugghh | Sep 30, 2007 4:03:44 PM

the defense is unmotivated at this point. the offense, oh well what can you say...we need a quarterback and Delhomme and Carr are not it. Delhomme was the best the first year he played and after that i've seen better high school games, Carr has to wear the gloves and throws a five yard pass because he has better feel for the ball. heck he couldn't feel any balls with those gloves so get over it and demand he play like a pro and not a high school player. we have the best potential defense of any team, but they have no spark. this is either the coaches problem or the players. let's trade all the players and dissolve the unmotivated players that can't contribute to a winning team or tell fox it's time to go back to ny.

Posted by: l yle justice | Sep 30, 2007 4:06:49 PM

is julius sick,or is he sending us a message.

Posted by: broderick | Sep 30, 2007 4:11:43 PM

So where are all of the Carr supporters who were so in favor a benching Jake (even before he was hurt) ? But like Carr, the defense failed to show up

Posted by: Jake fan | Sep 30, 2007 4:14:28 PM

Look Carr is our QB right now, I just watched the whole game and I don't know what you saw but what I saw was no help for the QB, takes an offensive line too.. He did some good things, and some bad, how bout' the dropped ball by Smith ?? That would have been a td.. Carr never had a chance to do anything.. And what the heck has happened to our defense ?? I have always liked Trgovac but the whole defensive line is terrible... And where is Peppers, yeah he is out there, but what is he doing, not the Peppers of the past .. I do not know what is going through Fox's head, nothing but respect for that man, but geez..... All I can do is shake my head, and hope for a good game next week.. Thank goodness it was not a shut out.. Oh and I have seen times here where Jake got bashed too.. Give Carr a chance, remember the drops by Smith, King, & Foster.. They did not help !!

Posted by: sick to my stomach | Sep 30, 2007 4:20:30 PM

We need 2 WRs, 1 DE, 3 LBs, a backup QB, 2 Safetys and a partridge in a pear tree. Man we're lookin really bad, out there. Smith and a subpar running game is not enough to be sucessful in this league. I mean come Fox we look the same as last year. These guys look like there just happy to be in the league. I guest we'll be better next year but we need to overhaul the hole team. We look weak, literally. Peppers should take the C off his jersey and give it to Thomas Davis. The defense is nothing and is lacking leadership, Fox must be ready to go back to New York because Eli is there. On the other hand, just look how the young players for the Bucs were into the game, making tackle, Forcing fumbles, doing what it takes to win football games. The Bucs are 4real. Oh! and a shotout goes out to Safety Chris Harris at least they know they played us. That dude can hit!!!!!!!1

Posted by: Born_ah_heel | Sep 30, 2007 4:20:31 PM

For Joe's question about Smith:

He was sucking hind titty just like the rest of the pussy-cats. Rhonde Barber not only ate his lunch, he took the desseret from his dinner as well.

Get used to it, Carolina is a good team, better than Atlanta and the A'ints.

But you better bring it all when you cross swords with the Bucs.

Our D is back, with younger fill-ins. Gruden finall has a QB that fits.

I would almost bet the farm, that had Garcia thrown a "Hail Mary" to Galloway in the closing seconds, it would have been succesful.

Posted by: Duffiedawg | Sep 30, 2007 4:22:55 PM

BTW, if what all I have heard from the "Fans", if you are tired of the "Dr. Pepper" trade him to us, the Bucs.

He just met a stellar DL today named Trueblood. Get used to the name, he is going to haunt you a long, long, time.

what's the worst of two evils,,,let's see a banged up delhomme or glove wearing carr? we need to see if gb wants to let farve play for us next year and we will trade for our whole defensive line.

Posted by: l yle justice | Sep 30, 2007 4:35:55 PM

Duffiedawg.....it's nice to finally hear from you Buc fans after so many years being so bad. We've crossed those swords so many times you've had to by new ones. So, as far as I can say, we beat you with your backup, and now you've beaten us with ours. Big damn deal.

I think OC Jeff just was given a wake up call from one of the better game planners in the league.....too bad Chuckie has too many enemies in Tampa to make it last. Kinda like these dumbass Carolina fans who wants everyone fired.

Posted by: Bucsux | Sep 30, 2007 4:36:08 PM

People bashing carr need to understand that his o-line game him no protection today, his receivers dropped plenty of balls, and the defense was on the field way too damn much. Granted, he did make a few bad throws, but the defense can't stop anyone lately. Damn, let a team pick up weinke and let him play against us...the guy would throw for 300 yards easy. Teams are realizing that all they have to do is throw towards the middle of our defense. When theres no pass rush then there usually isn't many mistakes forced by the defense. Hence, four games into the season, 2 sacks 0 interceptions. Where is this teams desire to win? Where is the heart, the fire, and the competitive edge? They need to get it together. And im not even going to get into the coaching staff. Also, I for one am tired of seeing nick goings try to return kicks. Ever since the Houston game it seems as if he is scared to return a kick as he downs it in the end zone. He may as well, since he can't run it past the 20. At least if its downed theres no chance of a fumble. The Panthers are still my team, but geez its so frustrating to see a team with this much talent play like a soft bunch of pansies. I think they will turn it around though, why?...because they have no other choice.

Posted by: ryan | Sep 30, 2007 5:00:21 PM

Ryan, that is the same line that Jake Delhomme plays behind and the same recievers he throws to... which is the point. Carr is not the answer to the Panthers woes. Having an offensive line that can protect the quarterback, whoever that is, and a defense that can get off the football field is the problem.

Posted by: ugghhh | Sep 30, 2007 5:06:18 PM

I hope everyone appreciates now how good Jake is. Peyton Manning-NO, but the emotion he brings to the game and his passion to win is what makes him great. Everyone who has dissed him in the pre-season and after needs to send some roses to his house.
His not perfect (who is), but he gets the job done.
Get well Jake!

Amen to Kris Jenkins' latest postgame comments, even stronger than the ones he made mid-week. But where was our saving grace in the form of David Carr and Dwayne Jarrett? They both saw PT, but they didn't arrive triumphantly as predicted by so many of you all. Maybe Jake isn't the issue, eh?
As for the defense, it's funny that Peppers went out early with a heart issue. Seems to me like he's had a "heart issue" for going on about 10 years now.

Posted by: Michael Procton | Sep 30, 2007 5:15:13 PM

Smitty drops the passed on purpose becuase he wants his lover Jake in the game. Steve Smith is the MOST overrated player on this team. He needs bi-polar meds...never seen a guy with so many mood swings.

Posted by: Carl Leazer | Sep 30, 2007 5:34:35 PM

I would rather have Steve Smith and his bi-polar disorder with passion and anger than most of the rest of the players and their uni-polar lacksidasical all the time attitudes.

Posted by: ugghhh | Sep 30, 2007 5:38:50 PM

Posted by: Ron in Charlotte | Sep 30, 2007 7:21:07 PM

No, Ron. It's bad enough watching QB's that were good enough to make a practice squad, I don't need to see one that couldn't.

Same way I didn't need to see Nick Maddox out there, either.

This team needs help, not sentimentalism for the days when Independence was undefeated.

Posted by: !!!!! | Sep 30, 2007 7:30:47 PM

It's kind of funny to see people making the same excuses for Carr that some of us misguided apologists did for five years.

We also thought that he had no help from the O-line, but you guys know what? We have the exact same line playing this year and our new guy Matt Schaub isn't getting sacked so much.

The reason is simple: Carr makes his line look horrible. He's indecisive, holds on to ball too long and can't see anything farhter than 5 yards down the field. He also is not a leader at all. Guys don't want to play for him.

Posted by: bill in houston | Sep 30, 2007 7:46:58 PM

Tom Soreneson doesn't know what the hell he's talikng about in his article about Carr. He attributed his performance to rust. Rust my a**. He just sucks. If I were y'all I'd be giving Weinke or Kerry Collins a call b/c you'd be better off with one of them at the helm.

Carr can't see down field and does not let plays developement. Now that I think about it you would probably be better off with Moore starting!

Posted by: Jose | Oct 1, 2007 7:51:09 AM

Where are all of the "sit Delhomme and play Carr" fans? Is Jake still that bad? Yeah, I didn't think so! Carr played absolutely terrible yesterday and he will continue to play that way for as long as he is a quarterback. He takes his sweet time getting rid of the ball and when he does finally throw, he makes poor decisions. I am glad you Delhomme bashers have no say in who should be starting on gameday. Stick to your 9-5's!!

Posted by: matt | Oct 1, 2007 8:20:44 AM

Lets just hope the 'aints defense cant have the same impact next sunday that TampaGay had.Because fact is Trog still needs to go ( get that bum back to michigan) and even though the aints are down right now, they have had a week to prepare for us and this team cant afford to loss another division game.Cant wait to play the Succaneers again,it will be a different game. Not starting to actually wonder if Weinke does have better accuracy than Minnie Mouse, and Colbert and Carter should get out of Dodge,Hell Oakland is having a fire sale on there team now and we know they have the WR'S that could make a impact.Time to keep the fingers crossed,Peppers Needs to start eating red meat again........

Posted by: WillHas4LipsNbleeds4SevenDays | Oct 1, 2007 9:43:03 AM

I meant Im actually wondering if Old man Weinke who stands like a statue does have better accuracy than Carr.Would it really matter with Carter n Colbert Dropping Balls all day.Maybe someone should tell them they get paid to catch not get open then drop the ball.Jake's still the best qb this team has ever had unless you count Steve Bono when he was hear.(Sarcasm)

Posted by: WillHas4LipsNbleeds4SevenDays | Oct 1, 2007 9:46:31 AM

you guys are idiots. "Weinke would be an upgrade.".... Sure, a washed up 40-year old who sat out training camp and has been eating ho-ho's on his couhc the past 4 sundays would surely be able to step right into a new system with an entirely different blocking scheme and perform. I swear I love the panthers but our fans on the whole might be the most retarded fans in the land.

Posted by: BigBeas | Oct 1, 2007 10:14:40 AM

First, I was at the game (not a PSL holder) and I have noticed the fair weatherness of the crowd. We do appear to NOT appreciate having a pro team here. We're spoiled by good collegiate sports and we seem to leave the intensity for that sort of thing. BUT ... I also totally agree with Jenkins - no heart, no passion - apology accepted. Give the fans credit for this - when Carr made his acrobatic effort, the crowd roared - not because we thought we were going to win, but because SOMEBODY chose to have heart! That's all we ask! Win or lose, Play with PASSION! But we fans need to have passion too. Quit being "pro" fans, too good to cheer a team through the rough times. Let's go home hoarse, hands red, EVERY GAME - or sell your spot to some maniac who will!

Posted by: Brinze | Oct 1, 2007 11:16:25 AM

The '95' Panthers had much more heart and passion when they started the season 0-5. The talent level wasn't there, but they played hard and you appreciated their effort. This team didn't have heart last year. What was done to correct this in the off-season? Thankfully, we didn't lose Jenkins

Posted by: joe smo | Oct 1, 2007 11:56:43 AM

To true Joe smo, thank the good lord we didnt lose "Big Kid".They should give him another extension and Hopefully he will get his Statue outside the stadium,Jenkins had a fairly decent game yesterday considering,I dont quit no the number but he was getting the snap count down and exploding through the line and I love the fact that he still looks at himself as a Gladiator and calling this a Gladiators sport. That mentality can do wonders if it spreads to the just one LB(besides Morgan and his partialy torn Achilles) with it already being in the secondary already with Harris.(Harris has already affected the play of Deke Cooper,Cooper keeps trying to knock the ball out as well)As far as coach Fox go's Ive always supported him,but If he doesnt fire Trog. Which should have happened after last season he needs to go.Maybe Foxy needs to think back to his first year here ,look in the mirror and question his OWN toughness. Now let's suck it up get a better mlb (Shaw,Beason,or more Anderson)prepare for the Aints and get back to that Team against the world Mentality.

Posted by: WillHas4LipsNbleeds4SevenDays | Oct 1, 2007 4:04:14 PM

WOW! As a Houston fan I have been lurking on the carolina boards to see the thoughts on David Carr. What I see is a repeat of what happened the last 2-3 years with David Carr in Houston. I promise you this, David Carr is not the answer for you all. Or for any other team in the NFL. We went through 5 years of the O-line being blamed for Carr being sacked so many times. As you guys can see, the sacks followed David Carr to Carolina. You will see him make a play or two with his legs (see the dive for first down) and it will get you excited. However prepare for a whole lot of 5 yard check downs, alot of sacks, and a pissed off Steve Smith. Pray for your Jake to get well soon. David Carr will do nothing but make you all angry panthers fans.

Posted by: Sentell | Oct 1, 2007 5:48:37 PM

Houston we have a problem!
We suck plane and simple.. the whole team has no spark at all..know one wants to play..defense has looked the worse i have ever seen ,..EVER.. Fox needs to be canned..offense looks bad, the line sucks..both QB's suck..man we look BAD....Can the Richardsons please spend some money...im done going to games..man we SUCK! Let steve smith go.. he needs to go to a worthy team.. he has a chance to be a HALL OF FAMER!..the panthers are holding him back..STEVE GO! you deserve to be a winner somewhere else..

Posted by: Aviston | Oct 1, 2007 6:34:47 PM

Dear Carolina Fan - I sat in Reliant Staduim for 5 years watching Carr get hammered. Fans blamed the offensive line. I finally decided that Carr's problem is lack of mental agility. All of your collective observations regarding his play at Carolina are the direct result of his not being the sharpest tool in the toolbag. Sorry that you have to endure this guy's hideous quarterback play.

Posted by: Dick in Hong Kong | Oct 1, 2007 10:57:32 PM

Another Texans fan chiming in here … Okay now let me preface this by saying this is hilarious because I know exactly what you guys are going thru. I knew Carr was a dud from day 1 and I've been steadily convincing the masses in Houston that he was a fraud and it wasn't our O-line. Finally we can all see that it was a defective Carr.

1, Carr is from the Jeff Tedford mold of QB's ... you know, the same fool that coached Akili Smith, Kyle Boller and Trent Dilfer (all flops at the pro-level)

2, Carr cannot and will not learn how to read defenses. He birddogs every play and he lacks every intangible known to quarterbacks. Trust me when I say he will dash your hopes every Sunday if he remains the starter. True, he will show a few glimpses every now & then but for the most part he will exhibit a good amount of sucktitude.

3, Carr holds on to the ball entirely toooooo long. He doesn't know how to look off his receivers and will force the ball into double coverage. When he does decide to go down field expect nothing more than a late pass that's lobbed up there for grabs because he doesn't have a clue what leading your receiver means.

4. Carr will ultimately make your O-line look like crap because he's the master of sacking himself. He exhibits about as much poise as a kitten in a room full of rocking chairs. He won't let the play develop and he's extremely skittish. If he's not running out of bounds about 10 yards behind the line of scrimmage, he'll be fumbling the snap or laying the ball on the turf when a defender so much as breathes on him.

5, Carr is the master of the dink & dink ... He's a punch-less quarterback who doesn't strike fear into anyone's eyes. It doesn't matter that he has a decent arm and the physical build, because he never uses them whatsoever. Don't expect Steve Smith to heap praises on Carr when it's all said & done. His best friend will be DeShaun Foster out the backfield and Jeff King on a rollout play.

I'm sure I could come up with 100 more things to tell you to watch out for but I'm sure you guys will find out in a matter of weeks.

Current talk about lack of "heart" is a year or two late. It has been pretty evident since getting waxed by Seahawks in 2005 NFC game.
